FROM THE RABBI

Leap Years & Leap Years

I am guessing it must have happened before, but this year seems odd in that a secular leap year coincides with a Jewish year. I decided to use the opportunity to discuss the calendar.

The secular calendar is based upon the earth’s rotation around the sun. A solar year is 365 1/4 days. After four years of 365 days the quarters add up to an entire day, so this year we will have February 29.

The Jewish calendar is based on the lunar cycle. It takes 29 1/2 days for the moon to complete its rotation. A lunar year therefore is 354 days, 11 1/4 days shorter than a solar year. If no adjustments were made the months would wander throughout the seasons. This cannot be, as Passover must fall in the spring and Sukkot in the fall. Before the fixed calendar the Sanhedrin would go out and look at the weather as the month containing Passover approached. If there were snow in the mountains they added a month to allow spring to happen.

About 1,500 years ago the calendar was fixed. We now have a nineteen year cycle, which contains seven leap years, in which a 30 day month is added. This is the system we still use today. This way the seasons and their holidays are always kept intact.

I wish everyone a wonderful extra month to prepare for Passover, 5776. Rabbi Evan B. Rubin

FROM THE PRESIDENT

My hope for everyone is that this winter is swift and safe and made more tolerable by the warmth we all get from learning.

Come to shul and take advantage of the many learning programs we now have in place here at shul.

If you are so inclined to study at home I suggest looking into the life and times of Arthur Szyk (1894–1951). The Arthur Szyk Society is dedicated to the preservation of Szyk’s artwork and his message of freedom and civil rights. Go to www.szyk.org to learn more.

Arthur Szyk (pronounced “Shik”) was a Jewish Pole who later in life fled Eastern Europe for the United States. He was a 20th century master illuminator, miniature painter, and activist-artist. In exploring this man’s life and his artistry you will be exposed his contributions that cross politics and literature through his illustrations and Judaica. His illustrated Hag- gadah from the 1930’s became his most recognized work.

This is the 75th anniversary of the President Roosevelt’s State of the Union speech where is the President addresses the nation about the essential “” – Speech, Worship, Want and Fear, that we hold dear and are the foun- dation of democracy.

Arthur Szyk had arrived only months earlier, in America, from Poland and was determined to inform the people of the United States of the horrible actions of .

Arthur Szyk’s quadriptych illustrating the Four Freedoms, 1942. (Arthur Szyk)

Along with these two famous artists were instrumental in communicating to the American public that the United States must take action against and the Axis Powers. More about this can be found in a recent article in The Nation magazine.

Stay warm and get prepared for Purim and another great freedom story. Danny Becker, President

OHR CHADASH RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

It may be cold outside and the snow may be falling, but we are keeping warm together at Ohr Chadash. Our families travel each Sunday and Thursday for classes from Wauseon, Toledo and Sylvania.

Heating things up in January, we shared several wonderful program events together. The Etz Chayim family, which included the Ohr Chadash parents and students participated in the first congregational learning session on a Sunday morning in January. It began with explanatory Shacharit services, a delicious breakfast and then Rabbi Rubin and Rabbi Lasson led an insightful learning session on the Ten Plagues. Adults and children took part in the most meaningful program.

Other programs included the annual family Shabbat dinner, the Tu B'Shevat seder and the family Shabbat learning service.

Our Ohr Chadash family will continue the fun while learning in February with the Jr. NCSY Shabbaton for students in Grades 6-8 during the weekend of February 5-7. The students will meet for classes on each Sunday and Thursday. The very special community Jewish Disabilities Awareness program is scheduled for February 28th.

Our family enjoys their time together in class and meeting for social activities. Like a nice cup of hot chocolate, the warmth of our Etz Chayim family got us through the chilly days of January.

THE PROGRAMMING PAGE

"And Torah study is equal to them all (the other 612 commandments) ..."

The study of Torah connects one to the knowledge, the "playbook" (so to speak) of G-d. G-d's essence is rooted in the , the Mishna, the Talmud, the Codes as well as modern-day works. It's a way to immerse yourself in the Divine Thought, to partner with G-d in charting the spiritual waters.

To that end, please try one of our weekly classes:

- Monday, Wednesday Evening Talmud (5:15 PM followed by services), - Tuesday Morning Potpourri of Jewish Thought and Perspectives/Breakfast Club (8:15 AM) - Tuesday Evening Mishna (5:15 PM followed by services) - Thursday Morning Women's class - "Book of Ruth" (10:00 AM, starting February 4th)

We are also proud to be hosting some wonderful guest speakers this month (Sunday mornings - Adult Ohr Chadash), including Rabbi Yossi Shemtov from Toledo Chabad and Rabbi Rod Glowgower from the Ann Arbor Orthodox Minyan.

And finally, please take a look at our other riveting programming (sports games, etc.) in store for this month and beyond.

All the best,

Yaakov Lasson
