San Francisco: Arion Press, 1987 Indian captivity narratives were popular reading in the before the vanishing of the frontier, and they are one of the earliest forms of American literature. Leaves E3, E4 and M4 are cancels. Boswell’s classic account of his journey to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson. The text of this book was largely completed in 1773, from the journal which Boswell kept while travelling in Scotland. The publication was held back until Johnson’s death. Many have considered this Boswell’s masterpiece, and at the very least it reveals that his unique gift for biography had fully flowered by the time he was in his early thirties. An eagle, on a rock seen from the front and turned partially to the left, one wing raised the other lowered. A shield containing the word ‘Amitie’ hangs by a strap from the bough of a flowering bush. The monograms of the Detmold brothers appear in the plate in the upper corners. Signed by E.J. Detmold and initialed in pencil in the lower margin. 1902. * “Peacocks” (oblong plate). 8x16.5 cm. (3¼x6½”) on a 22x29 cm (8½x11½”) sheet. On the left are a peacock and peahen, standing; the foliage of creeping plants trails across the plates from the right. The distance is filled with the rays of the sun, just set. Signed by E.J. Detmold and initialed in pencil in the lower margin. * “Peacocks” (upright plate). 18.5x11.5 cm. (7¼x4½”) on a 30x21 cm (11¾x8¼”) sheet. A peacock stands on a slope with his tail spread and raised high behind him. On a lower level are two peahens. Signed by E.J. Detmold and initialed in pencil in the lower margin. Together three original etchings. 1902-1905 he Detmold twins collaborated on a number of animal etchings at the close of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th century. Maurice Detmold committed suicide in 1908, Edward would go on to success as an illustrator of numerous works including The Fables of Aesop, Maurice Maeterlinck’s Life of the Bee and Fabre’s Book of Insects. London: Printed for Nathaniell Butter, [1611?] First edition in English of Homer’s Iliad, translated by George Chapman. This is apparently the later printing of the first edition, with less elaborate chapter headpieces than in the first printing. This work was followed by Chapman’s translation of the Odyssey was published circa 1615 and a combined edition with a new title page was issued shortly thereafter. STC 13634. Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Blanchard, Second volume of the rare first American edition of Mary Shelley’s classic tale of sympathetic terror, originally published in London in 1818, in three volumes. The Frankenstein story evolved during the wet Swiss summer of 1816, where the Shelleys and Lord Byron passed the time reading and writing ghost stories for their amusement. “Frankenstein” developed into a long yarn, and at her husband’s urging, Mrs. Shelley refined it into a book to be published. Binding well rubbed and worn, spine label mostly perished; front hinge cracked through, rear nearly so, first signature loose, contents rippled from dampness, some foxing and soiling, ownership signatures to front free endpaper; just fair to good, but a rare example in the original boards. Included are stories, games, craft projects, and more, as well as, of course, ads for clothing and other items, with prices. The illustrators of the color pictorial wrappers include Willy Pogany, Helen Smith, Dorothy Gregory, Erick Berry and others. Added to the lot is “Terry and Ted on the trail of the Secret Formula, by Uncle Don” and “What Happened to - Tommy” by Frances Brundage (poor cat had a can tied to his tail - kids can be so cruel).
