Monday to Friday East Anglian Pictures 1 1 English School, circa 1622 Sir Thomas Jermyn (1573-1645) was Comptroller of the Royal Household Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified with Sir Thomas Jermyn from 1639-1641 and Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk in 1640. He represented of Rushbrooke, Suffolk, three-quarter-length, holding a staff Bury St. Edmunds as Member of Parliament in 1614, 1621, 1623, 1626, inscribed ‘Aeta: Suae: 66 Anno: Dni. 1622’ (upper right) 1628, 1640. His eldest son also became M.P. for Bury St. Edmunds. The oil on canvas arms depicted are that of Jermyn (a crescent between two mullets in 116 x 100cm (45 11/16 x 39 3/8in). pale), there is no other obvious Jermyn family member of this date, and Within a contemporary or near contemporary ebonised and gilt this identification is further supported by a drawing in the Sutherland heightened frame. Extra-Illustrated Clarendon in the Ashmolean captioned ‘from an original £4,000 - 6,000 picture at Rushbrooke, New Bury, Suffolk’. However the inscription is an €4,700 - 7,100 anomoly, giving the age of 66 for the sitter in 1622. PROVENANCE: Christie’s, London, 23 Jan 1970. Lot 9 Identified as Sir Thomas Jermyn. 4 | Bonhams 2 2 After Michel Angelo Rooker Chequers Square, Bury St Edmunds, Circa 1795 oil on canvas laid down onto panel 36 x 46cm (14 3/16 x 18 1/8in). £1,000 - 1,500 €1,200 - 1,800 This appears to be closely related to a watercolour of the same subject by Michael Angelo Rooker in the Victoria and Albert Museums Collection. Several other Bury St Edmunds subjects by the same artist of circa 1795 are known, including views of the market square, Abbey gardens and Abbot’s Bridge. A sepia version of the same subject titled ‘St James’s Church, Bury St Edmunds’ was sold Sotherbys, London July 4, 2002, lot 209 for £10,500. A watercolour by the same artist ‘Market square, Bury St Edmunds with cattle, dogs and figures’ was sold Christie’s, London February 22, 1966, Lot 166 for £260. Another Bury St Edmunds view sold Christies, London March 29, 1983, Lot 10 for £6,000. 3 English School, circa 1660 Half length portrait of a Gentleman, believed to be a member of the Broke family of Broke Hall, Suffolk, possibly Brt. Robert Broke of Nacton (1622-1694) oil on canvas 88 x 74cm (34 5/8 x 29 1/8in). £1,000 - 1,500 €1,200 - 1,800 PROVENANCE: Purchased Broke Hall Sale, Bannister & Co, R J Girling, 26th and 27th June, 1946, Lot 250 for £1. Overview Edward Ardizzone RA was one of relatively few British artists who defined the field of illustration for their generation. Although his work as an artist and illustrator was wide-ranging, it is for his illustrated children's books, almost continuously available since they were first published from the late s onwards, that he is best known. This book provides the first fully illustrated survey of Ardizzone's work, analysing his activity as an artist and illustrator in the context of 20th- century British art, illustration, printing and publishing. Copiously illustrated with many previously unpublished images, Edward Ardizzone: Artist and Illustrator also contributes more broadly to the Edward Ardizzone: Artist and Illustrator reassessment and investigation of midth-century British art Edward Ardizzone: Artist and Illustrator illustration. Alan Powers author of the bestselling Eric Ravilious: Artist and Designer has written a critically considered text which draws for the first time on the family's archives, those of Ardizzone's publishers, and conversations with those who knew the artist.

Black December, 2012 iii ABSTRACT British painter Doris Zinkeisen (1889 – 1991) is largely unknown to art history. Therefore, her paintings done as a commissioned war artist (1941 – 1945) have yet to be adequately examined. The majority of these 14 works are easily understood as nationalist propaganda as they depict the relief work of British forces in Europe. However, Doris Zinkeisen also produced three paintings of the Nazi concentration camp at Bergen- Belsen: Belsen: April, 1945, Human Laundry and The Burning of Belsen, which have been interpreted as harrowing works of Holocaust art. This thesis examines these three works by Zinkeisen and argues they are best understood as nationalist propaganda for Britain. This thesis seeks to expand the art historical scholarship on an unremembered, yet prolific artist. Second, it contributes research to the study of British commissioned war-time art. Finally, it reclaims nationalist propaganda too long misunderstood as Holocaust art. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 1 Memory of Belsen through Nationalism 2 British Commissioned War Art 6 Zinkeisen and the Belsen Narrative 7 Setting the Stage 8 Act I: Belsen: April, 1945 15 The Problem 15 Society of Spectacle 23 Act II: Human Laundry 31 German vs.

GOLDENHURST LunEch wnith cJuoliaun Cnlatry eatr Geodldenhurst and a review of his recently-published novel ‘Briefs Encountered’. Noël Coward at ‘Look Out’ - Firefly, Jamaica PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY THE INTERNATIONAL NOËL COWARD SOCIETY - 1- www.noëlcoward.net hat an amazing month March was! Apart from reasonable weather, two of the most significant events for me marked an early opening of Spring EDITORIAL long before an Easter chick was a wink in a cockerel’s eye. Out of the blue came a charming invitation from Julian Clary for the officers of the Society to visit The Old Manor - but forever Goldenhurst in the eye of the Coward faithful - for lunch and a celebration of the completed renovation of Noël’s country retreat in Kent and the publication of Julian’s novel Briefs Encountered. As Daniel Massey said once about an invitation to Noël’s for lunch, “Well, you don’t turn that down!” And we didn’t! More on the visit in this edition. The climax of the month was the opening of Star Quality - The World of Noël Coward at the Lincoln Center in New York. This exhibition has been rightly trumpeted in Home Chat for the past few editions and the result did not let the herald down. This really is an impressive achievement. As a result of an initial partnership between the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts (NYPL) and The Noël Coward Foundation (NCF) the idea was born - and together with other partners - the exhibition was created.
