Diocesan Staff Position: Open Position: Canon for Youth and Family Ministries Closing Date: Position open until filled. Start date no later than: June 1, 2021

What we seek

The of the Episcopal of Spokane is seeking to add a full time lay or ordained Canon for Youth and Family Ministries to her leadership team. This position will focus on oversight of diocesan programs for youth and family ministries. In addition, the Canon will serve as the Executive Director of Camp Cross, our diocesan summer camp.

This is an exciting opportunity to work as a team with the current Canon for Youth Ministry and Director of Camp Cross. The new Canon for Youth and Family Ministries will act as Associate Director of Camp Cross until November 1, 2021, and then will assume the full responsibilities for youth and family ministries and become the Executive Director of Camp Cross.

The canon we seek will  be passionate about the ministry of youth.  be a teacher, able to convey the Gospel message in a creative and compelling way and help others to do the same.  be an evangelist, passionate about sharing the good news of Christ and able to help. others, especially youth, learn how to share their own faith story.  be committed to collaboration and cooperation.  be a person of entrepreneurial spirit, with an ability to embrace change in an evolving context.  demonstrate maturity, commitment, organizational and communication skills.

Our canon will be a person  of prayer and study, deeply committed to following Jesus and growing in their own faith.  committed to the , and in particular the Episcopal Church.  committed to the vows of baptism and ordination (position open to lay and ordained persons).  who likes young people and believes in their gifts and leadership.  willing to be held accountable for their faith, understanding the importance of retreats and continuing education.  who does not “watch the clock” and understands that ministry demands times of uneven work hours and, occasionally, long work hours. And understands that there will be times of rest that balance out the extended work.  who likes to drive, is willing to engage in congregational visitations, and looks forward to being with congregations.  who can work well with others, build collaborative relationships and develop teams.  who understands when it is necessary to be in charge and when to step back, and understands their role on diocesan staff.  who has a strong background in theology, ministry, pastoral skills and youth ministry.  who has at least five years of experience of working with youth on a congregational or diocesan level.

Canon for Youth and Family Ministries Roles and Responsibilities

Leadership Development for Young People  Oversee the diocesan Youth Leadership Team (YLT), a youth-led organization, consisting of youth and adult leaders throughout the Diocese for the purpose of leadership development and empowerment for diocesan and parish youth programs and ministries  Continually lift up the gifts of young people and invite them into leadership positions in youth ministry and other ministries on the local, diocesan and wider Church level  Offer ongoing training for teens and for adult leadership  Partner and network with other and the Province to provide leadership opportunities for youth from this diocese  Have demonstrated training, experience and skills in raising up the leadership of youth

Support and Development of Diocesan Youth and Family Programs  Teens Encounter Christ (High School)  New Beginnings (Middle School)  Winter Cross – a winter Camp for ages 13-18  Episcopal Missions Weekend (Mission experience for ages 13- 18 in the spring)  A yearly “major trip.” These include The Episcopal Youth Event (EYE); an international or domestic Pilgrimage; and a domestic or international Mission. EYE, the Pilgrimage and the mission trip rotate each year  Ongoing leadership training and development for high school age people  With the YLT and other leaders, explore the development of new youth programs  Help develop mission and outreach training and experiences for youth  Support diocesan congregations in developing sustainable models children’s and family faith formation  Work closely with the Canon for Discipleship in planning and implementing formation education and experiments

Congregational Development and Support of Youth and Family Ministries  Be an advocate for children, youth and family ministries within our congregations  Be convinced that our congregations and communities of faith are called by God into being and are not limited by size, location or condition  Believe that youth ministry is different in every place and possible in every place  Communicate regularly with congregational leadership  Be available and make regular visits for encouragement, training and support for congregational youth and family ministries  Assist congregations to invite and recruit adult youth leaders by identifying potential candidates Be a resource for congregations seeking to engage this ministry and be available, as needed, for ongoing support, collaboration and coaching  Bring attention to this ministry throughout the diocese by actively promoting its importance through social media, diocesan publications and congregational workshops and seminars  Offer ongoing training, networking and resourcing for youth leadership, such as monthly check-ins, and conference calls. Draw on their gifts, insights and skills to assist others  Identify and utilize adult leaders for diocesan youth ministries

Diocesan Canon In partnership with the Bishop, Canon to the Ordinary, Canon for Discipleship, and the Regional Development Team Coordinator, the Canon for Youth and Family Ministries will take lead in areas of our diocesan life that center on youth and families formation, development and leadership specifically but not limited to:  Participating and collaborating in regular meetings with other diocesan Canons and staff as part of an effective team effort  Make regular parish visitations on behalf of the Bishop with the focus on supporting families and youth  Take full part and leadership in diocesan and regional events  Work as part of the diocesan staff team sharing in mutual ministries and responsibilities  Fulfill other duties deemed necessary by the Bishop

Executive Director of Camp Cross

General requirements:  Reside at Camp Cross for all sessions of Summer Camp (8 weeks)  Work closely as a team with the Business and Facilities Manager, Assistant Camp Director and other “core team” members and camp staff  Provide leadership to young adults, youth and children to create a safe, positive, friendly camp environment  Use sound problem-solving, communication and leadership skills and management/supervisory skills as needed  Be willing to work hours that can be long and irregular  Be able to physically participate and lead all camp-related activities and programs  Have camp programing knowledge, skills and experience  Have networking skills and an involvement in the wider Episcopal Church and community

Camp Cross leadership, supervision and training:  Demonstrate active leadership and presence in the daily life of the Camp  Assist in program development and oversee the execution of the camp program  Plan, direct and supervise all camp programs and staff  Develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the three-day training program for Camp Counselors, Summer Staff and Resource Teams called Leaders in Training (LIT) held at the beginning of camp each year  Serve as a resource to staff as they maintain a balanced program, which focuses on the development of the camper as a Christian disciple  Promote a climate of teamwork among staff for the good of the Camp and campers  Coordinate and collaborate with Seminarian Intern and supporting on all pastoral issues

Camp Cross Community Model and Development:  Create a camp experience that is deeply focused on the traditions of the Episcopal Church promoting a sense of Christian community grounded in our baptismal covenant  Help each person to be a creative and compelling witness to Jesus Christ  Promote a Christian Camp spirit and identity for children and staff  Provide an atmosphere for developing good morale and wellbeing among the camp community  Be open to a community approach of clear expectations, agreement and mutual accountability  Support and develop a collaborative leadership model of camp ministry

Camp Administration:  Monitor safety and all procedures as they pertain to the complete supervision of all campers and program staff  Develop routines, schedules and procedures for camp operation  Maintain records for all campers and staff, including camp applications, emergency contacts, medical information, etc. (done through the Diocesan Registrar)  Maintain accurate, complete record of program information and all activities actually carried out  Prepare an evaluation of each camp week, including staff evaluations, camper records, and provide detailed recommendations for the following season  Work with diocesan financial officer and Business and Facilities Manager to develop yearly budgets  Work with Business and Facilities Manger to open and close camp  Oversee ongoing strategic planning
