United States of America: Science communication in the USA: It’s complicated . 959 Bronwyn Bevan and Brooke Smith PREFACE In 2020, one can hear the provocation that ‘science is a human right’ ring louder and louder.1 At first, such an assertion seems overblown; among the human rights to which we aspire—equality, freedom from poverty, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly—‘the right to science’ seems quite far down the list of priorities. And yet, we find ourselves in the midst of so many problems where science might offer at least partial solutions—and understanding science also may help us avoid more of the problems science has already caused. Access to science and its benefits and opportunities is uneven across the world—as is the production of scientific knowledge. Further, the gains of scientific knowledge have been concentrated in wealthy regions of the globe while the costs of producing scientific knowledge and its application have been pushed to poorer regions. Better access to science, then, even in a modest way through science communication, has been one response to this inequality. At the Australian National Centre for Public Awareness of Science at The Australian National University (ANU), our mission for over 30 years has been to foster the ‘democratic ownership of science’. So, cataloguing stories of science communication from all over the world, beginning to account for the ways that science is and could be accessible to more people as well as the ways in which scientific knowledge is held to account, is an important part of our goal. We have been proud to support the project that has produced this fine volume. But this is a beginning.2 And the word ‘beginning’ is an important one; the goal of this volume was not to produce myriad ‘origin stories’ of science communication (in Australia, this would be a 60,000-year-old history of Indigenous Australians sharing knowledge), but to explore the beginning of a more recent, 20th-century common project that is being realised in multiple ways around the globe. In some countries like Australia from where I write, science communication is an academic and professional activity with government support that waxes and wanes. Beginnings: Intention and Method. New York: Columbia University Press. ix Communicating SCIENCE communication is a form of activism; in still others, it is seen as part of science itself. Sometimes the goal of science communication is education, other times it is a way of sharing the creation of knowledge and yet other times science communication is about addressing items of concern—health, climate, environment, technology. And so, a beginning is a messy thing that struggles to contain all the different possibilities that a story can tell. This volume celebrates that with a proliferation of terminology, goals and aims— and the authors, while lucid, sophisticated and bringing substantial analytic skills to bear, also acknowledge a glorious mess that is science communication as it evolves from its 20th-century beginnings. Finally, a note on methods. In some parts of the world, including Australia, empirical methods in science communication thrive and, for the most part, this is a happy advancement of the field. However, the methods of history, also empirical—of collecting evidence in an archive of sorts, of telling stories and gathering a corpus that will guide future work—are

    Tartu Centre for CCIs : Growing local CCIs through an export-driven incubation programme © Ahto Sooaru • Economic growth • Entrepreneurship • Attractiveness of territory • New business models • Skills • City branding Context Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia. It has 100,000 inhabitants, with a very young population (more than 50% of the population is under 30). This medium-sized city is often considered the intellectual and cultural centre of the country, embodied in a leading research and training institution, the University of Tartu, and a strong concentration of students (around 18,000 in 2011). Spearheading the country’s reputation in research and providers of higher education, the University of Tartu is ranked in the top 3% of the world’s universities. Tartu also has a strong cultural offer and a tradition of singing, folk music tradition and craftsmanship (in the St. Antoine area). Amongst small and medium-sized cities, Tartu is an early adopter of CCI support. It launched its creative industry policy in 2004 with a view to offering a new perspective to young talents, nurturing and encouraging creativity and local expression, and retaining the city’s young graduates by offering them business opportunities. Tartu was chosen as the location for the first Centre for Creative Industries in Estonia, as a result of a selection process that began in 2005 and drawing on the results of a national mapping of CCIs (completed by the Estonian Institute of Economics in 2003). Through consultation with a panel of 45 experts working at 1Centre for Research on the science–media interface, we sought to identify the most visible scientists currently living and working Evaluation, Science and in South Africa. In total, 211 scientists – less than 1% of the scientific workforce of the country – were Technology (CREST), Stellenbosch University, identified as visible in the public sphere. The demographic profile and institutional spread of South Africa’s Stellenbosch, South Africa visible scientists suggest that more should be done to increase the diversity of scientists who are publicly visible. Estonians have one of the biggest collections of folk songs in the world, with written records of 133,000 folk songs. Our capital Tallinn is the best preserved medieval city in Northern Eu- rope. You might say Estonia is also the greenest country as forests cover about 50% of the territory, or around 2 million hectares. It is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Europe, but there are over 2,000 islands, 1,000 lakes and 7,000 rivers.

The ESN was founded in 1976 with the objectives to advance Neurochemistry for the public benefit and to promote the development of Neurochemistry in Europe. As it was always of special importance for our society to bring together Euro- pean scientists from East and West, several ESN meetings have been held in East Europe. Following this old tradition of ESN, we are pleased to have now our first meeting in one of the Baltic States. The program committee and the local organising committee have organised an outstanding meeting for our society. We have an excellent scientific prog- ram with prominent international plenary speakers, exciting symposia and minisymposia and a large number of excellent poster presentation. As new initiative, ESN has established now the ESN Young Members Symposia which will give our young members a platform to present their exciting scientific results as symposium talk at our international conference. Our meeting will offer heaps of opportunities for scientific exchange and interactions. The scientific content of our meeting will be nicely completed by several social events which will get us in close contact with Estonia and its history.
