Black US Army bands and their bandmasters in World War I Peter M. Lefferts This essay sketches the story of the bands and bandmasters of the twenty seven new black army regiments which served in the U.S. Army in World War I. They underwent rapid mobilization and demobilization over 1917-1919, and were for the most part unconnected by personnel or traditions to the long-established bands of the four black regular U.S. Army regiments that preceded them and continued to serve after them. Pressed to find sufficient numbers of willing and able black band leaders, the army turned to schools and the entertainment industry for the necessary talent. -

The program well organised and it was carried out well. The schedule allowed some flexibility that was asked by the students in the late afternoon part of the program. Lounatuuli shopping centre arrangements were very good, including presentation ice-skating and 4-d films mystery shoppers This type of activity could in the future be done/discussed by Estonian and Finnish students Visiting business faculty premises of Tartu Kutsehariduskeskus including meeting each other of both groups a small shop for practicing selling and sales administration, with information system covering logistics and many types of sales statistics and reports presentations given by the Estonians and the Finns a tour in other premises A language lesson of some of the similarities and differences in Estonian and Finnish languages Cons The most important aspect to be developed in the future is the more student involvement in communication with each other also during the official program. -

23. Baltic perspectives on the European Security and Defence Policy Elzbieta Tromer I. Introduction Given the choice between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Euro- pean Security and Defence Policy as providers of their national security, the Baltic states—Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania—look to the USA. One reason is their perception of Russia as a source of instability. Another is their lack of con- fidence in the ability of the ESDP to deal with present-day threats. Although these three states are eager to be ‘normal’ members of the European Union and thus to join in its initiatives, their enthusiasm for the EU’s development of its own military muscle is lukewarm. An EU with some military capability but without the USA’s military strength and leadership holds little promise for them. Since the ESDP vehicle is already on the move, the Baltic states see their main function as ensuring coordination between the ESDP and NATO. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania want to be ‘Atlanticists from within the ESDP’.1 The Baltic states see themselves as exposed to challenges similar to those confronting the Nordic countries: notably the challenge of the new transatlantic dynamic, which makes it almost impossible to avoid taking sides between the US and Europe on an increasing range of global and specific issues. Being torn in this way is bound to be especially painful for Scandinavian [and Baltic] societies which have strong ties of history, culture and values with both sides of the Atlantic, and which in strategic terms are relatively dependent both on American military and European economic strength.2 The Nordic countries are seen by the Baltic states as allies in this context. -

During about the quarter of the century that has elapsed after regaining independence, our scientific landscape has changed radically. The lion’s share of research work is integrated with providing university education. The targets for the following seven years were defined at the very start of the year, in the document adopted by Riigikogu (Parliament) on January 22, 2014 and entitled “Estonian research and development and innovation strategy 2014- 2020. Knowledge-based Estonia”. It starts with the acknowledgement familiar to all of us that the number and complexity of challenges faced by the society is ever increasing. -

A Day in Stockholm
A Day In Stockholm Stockholm, Sweden Stockholm (1) Stockholm is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. The city is over 700 years old, and is spread across 14 islands as it faces in to Lake Mälaren and out to the Baltic Sea. You can get to just about all of Stockholm’s many wondrous sites on foot, which is the perfect way to see the city. There are also a variety of boat trips that will give you different facets of Scandinavia’s largest, and in many eyes, most beautiful city. (2) Stockholm is a major international city, which provides the great shopping, quality eateries, highest standard hotels, internationally renowned club and music scene and vibrant cultural life one would expect. Where Stockholm comes into its own however is its sheer, natural beauty. (3) Starting minutes by boat outside of the center of the city is Stockholm’s archipelago with it's over 24,000 islands. Boat trips can take you around Lake Mälaren or out into the archipelago. (2) Must see/Do NOT miss attractions Ladies Day – shopping galore in the city. With spouse or partner – Stockholm has an abundance of museums and galleries. Some of the most popular are: The Museum of Modern Art , Millesgården (close to the entrance of the island of Lidingö it is the former home of Carl Milles and is now a museum, garden and park with a beautiful view of Stockholm), The Nordic Museum , the newly opened Fotografiska , a center for contemporary photography, and The National Museum. Family Day – The island of Djurgården alone can keep you and your family busy for a few days. -

Professional career: Dr. Beaudoin has taught music theory, music history, music composition and clarinet at Norteastern University, the New England Conservatory of Music, and online courses in music history and jazz at Somerset Community College. He is currently Assistant Professor of Humanities at Fitchburg State University, and a lecturer at Rhode Island College in Providence. For 2015, Dr. Beaudoin is a Fulbright Scholar for the music department at Tallinn University, in Tallinn, Estonia. MAIA BOLTOVSKY (1972).
