CORPORATE PROFILE

The Philippine Cancer Society (PCS) has endeavored to serve Filipinos in the fight against cancer as embodied in its mission and vision statement.

Since 1956, the society has focused on its efforts towards these advocacies – statistical research, education and information, prevention and early detection, and focused patient services.

The Philippine Cancer Society- Cancer Registry (PCS-MCR) is one of three sources providing internationally-validated cancer incidence, mortality and survival statistics in the country. Together with the Department of Health- Cancer Registry (DOH-RCR), the PCS publishes the “Cancer Facts and Estimates” and “Cancer in the ”. PCS data has been included in the publications of the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR) for “Cancer Incidence in Five Continents” and the online cancer statistics GLOBOCAN by the World Health Organization international agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Lectures are provided to communities, workplaces, schools and companies to raise awareness about cancer in conjunction with the mobile clinic free screening services for cervical, breast, and prostate cancer. It has a partnerd with the Knowledge Channel to educate children on health promotion and cancer prevention. It operates a website to provide information on cancer. It has expanded its reach to the populice through social media.

The society has advocated for a 100% smoke-free environment nationwide and for the full implementation of the provisions under the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The PCS has also strongly supported Hepatitis-B infant vaccination for the prevention of liver cancer. It adheres to the DOH call for the prevention of Non-Communicable Disease (NCDs) by promoting the four pillars of a healthy lifestyle: balanced nutrition, physical activity, limit alcohol intake, and no to cigarette smoking. It has pioneered work on Hospice Care for the terminally ill, and Patient Navigation to eliminate the barriers on cancer care through timely diagnosis and early treatment.

Volunteer doctors offer first line consultations for the PCS. Referrals for patients needing further medical attention are endorsed to partner hospitals and diagnostic services.

The PCS is a medium size Non-Government Organization, duly registered with the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). It is licensed and monitored by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to raise funds for its programs, and is a member of the Philippine Council of NGO Certification (PCNC). The DSWD and PCNC accreditations allow the Philippine Cancer Society to be declared as a donee institution granting donor tax credits with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). The Philippine Cancer Society (PCS) has been fortunate to have many patrons and volunteers helping us fight cancer. It is because of their valuable support that the society is able to fund, organize and implement its programs, projects and services.

For the last fifteen years, The Best Dressed Women of the Philippines (BDWP) has been at the forefront of the most glittering fund raising Gala Dinner in the country. Each year has been more successful than the one preceeding it.

Message

Let me first recognize the effort of the Philippine Cancer Society (PCS) as a member of the Cancer Coalition Philippines for pushing the congress to pass on third reading the National Integrated Cancer Control Act in late 2018. This cancer control bill is sure to benefit all cancer patients and all Filipinos for the provisions on cancer prevention, screening, diagnostics, treatment, and hospice and palliative care.

Let me also commend our volunteers and benefactors of the Best Dress Women of the Philippines (BDWP), for their fifteen years of hard work, untiring efforts, and commitment to raising funds for the Society.

Through the BDWP annual event’s proceeds, the PCS has continued its programs and services on patient navigation, the mobile clinic, hospice care assistance, cancer registry, and information campaigns against cancer.

We truly appreciate all the efforts of everyone involved as they become advocates to fight this dreaded disease. This will enable the PCS to expand and sustain our work in the coming years.

A very pleasant Quinceañeras to Chairperson Consul Helen Ong and her Organizing Committee for a most successful Best Dress Women of the Philippines 2018 event.

CORAZON A. NGELANGEL, MD, MS, PhD President

Message

In 2018, the Philippine Cancer Society experienced great achievements and milestones that it can be proud of.

The Best Dressed Women of the Philippines turned 15 years in a wonderful night of pomp and pageantry as it broke the records of attendees and most successful funds raised in the history of the event. Warm congratulations and acknowledgements are therefore in order for the ever gracious Consul Helen Ong and in her indefatigable organizing committee for a job well done.

It was also in during this year that the Cancer Bill, better known as the The National Integrated Cancer Control Act (NICCA), was approved by the Philippines Congress. This landmark piece of legislation is a triumphant declaration of commitment to seriously address a potentially devastating future cancer epidemic. According to the WHO, it is projected that by 2030, between 10 & 11 million cancers will be diagnosed each year in low and middle income countries like the Philippines. We must, therefore, prepare and formulate strategies to mitigate the impact of this burden amongst our citizens. As a member of the Cancer Coalition Philippines, the PCS is proud of the valuable hardwork and contributions it made towards crafting and advocating for the passage of the NICCA.

Another advocacy of the PCS that saw fruition was the inclusion of Hospice and Palliative Care into the Universal Health Care Bill, which was also passed shortly after the NICCA. This ensures that patients receive pain control, relief of symptoms, psychosocial & pastoral care across the whole cancer continuum.

It was in the same year that the PCS joined the call for stakeholders and organizations focused on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) such as cardiovascular diseases, coronary artery diseases, chronic obstructive airways diseases, and diabetes, come together in a movement that was national and international in scope to fight NCDs together.

With these developments, we look forward to a more exciting future in cancer care for Filipinos. 5

“Indeed the Society owes a lot to the BDWP committee which provides the much-needed funding support for most of our programs that affect the impoverished sector of our society,” Former Chairman BobbyPaterno. 2012 BDWP Awardees Birth of fashion for a cause PCS longest and biggest fundraising event soon came into inception fifteen years ago. Initially, the event was supposed to be a Dinner Dance to be held at the Manila Polo Club intended to raise funds for PCSI’s patient services which is aimed at bringing relief to those afflicted with cancer. However, through the initiatives of Angola Consul Helen Ong and Johnny Litton supported by philanthropist Imelda Cojuangco, a bigger concept sprung up that brought to light the birth of the Best Dressed Women of the Philippines Awards Ball. This fashion for cause honors the country’s admired personalities who poses beauty and compassion for fellow Filipinos

The initial committee for the Best Dressed Ball was composed of event honorary chairperson Imelda Cojuangco and event chairperson Consul Helen Ong who were joined by co-chairman Gerry Contreras and committee members Johnny Litton, fashion czar Pitoy Moreno and Monaco consul Fortune Ledesma. Imelda Cojuangco has a long list of philanthropic undertakings and the Best Dressed Ball is one of those close to her heart. She actively campaigned for its cause by conducting meetings in her home and encouraging people to join her and the committee with their crusade.

With Johnny Litton’s impeccable foray in events and hosting, he was commissioned to be the master of ceremonies since year one. He personally felt the distressing strike of the malignant disease when his beloved son, EJ Litton, passed away after bravely fighting a long standing illness.

2018 BDWP Awardees Milestone charity endeavor While it is difficult to succeed in the battle against cancer, there are crusades worth championing. One is the success of the first Best Dressed Ball which was effectively realized at the Mandarin Oriental Manila in September 2004. With the massive support of kindhearted donors during the succeeding years, the committee needed a bigger venue to stage what has become an annual calendar event. It was then held at the Rizal Ballroom of the Makati Shangri-La. The success of its first run, anchored on the consistent support of its active committee, ushered another year for Best Dressed Ball which later became an annual charity endeavor all in support of PCS. “We needed volunteers who would support us with our mission to raise funds for the PCS patient services,” said Consul Ong. With this in focus, the committee solicited help from individuals with the same advocacy.

The support they received was so tremendous that two years after the birth of Best Dressed Ball, a group of volunteers was formed to sustain the Best Dressed Ball’s worthy cause. Thus, the creation of the Ambassadors for Life was initially comprised of Mellie Ablaza, Tess Castro, Baby de Jesus, Nini Layug, Mabel Abaño, Olga Martel, Naty Pappas, and Mars Lambino. These emissaries became an essential arm in encouraging more people to participate in the advocacy of Best Dressed Ball. 16 Best Dressed Women

Fifteen years of charity, fashion and compassion

Charity and love are the strong stimuli that continuously stir the volunteers and trustees of the Philippine Cancer Society, Inc (PCSI), a premier anti-cancer institution in the country led by Chairman Antonio Ma. J. Guerrero, in consummating worthy crusades and relentless campaigns against cancer.

Over many years, cancer has been the third leading cause of morbidity and mortality in our country, whereby thousands of lives are lost day after day with the Big C attacking the lungs, breast, cervix, colon, prostate, ovary, stomach, among others.

For nearly 60 years, this institution has been baffled with the question: what can we do to help?

The answer mainly centered on programs for advocacies for life. In 2000, fundraising activities were created to promote cancer consciousness and awareness such as the Opera Ball, the Terry Fox Run Marathon of Hope, the Chichirica Ball, the Quezon Memorial Circle Run, and the City Special Events Dinner Dance. Four years later, PCSI held the Relay for Life, a signature fundraising and cancer awareness activity of the American Cancer Society (ACS). 17 Best Dressed Women
