Sofia Nădejde. a Nineteenth-Century Romanian Socialist Feminist Sofia Nădejde. A nineteenth-century Romanian Socialist Feminist By Anamaria Devesel Submitted to Central European University Department of Gender Studies In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor Francisca de Haan CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2012 Abstract The topic of my thesis is socialist feminism in late nineteenth- century Romania and the way in which it has been acknowledged (or not) and presented in the Romanian scholarly literature. As a case study I focused on Sofia Nădejde’s (1856-1946) writings and activity. I became interested in this topic when I realized that Sofia Nădejde is not studied in the current Romanian feminist historiography. Romanian feminist history has developed since 1989 but there seems to be no interest in the topic of socialist feminism and Sofia Nădejde has been almost entirely neglected. I studied Sofia Nădejde’s work and activity in the socialist circle and the Social Democratic Workers Party of Romania and her articles in different Romanian socialist journals. My research questions were: how can we characterize Sofia Nădejde’s social and political ideas? Second, how are Sofia Nădejde’s writings and activity described in the Romanian historiography of the communist period and in recent feminist Romanian historiography? Regarding the first question, my analysis of some of Sofia Nădejde’s journalistic work has shown that Sofia Nădejde was not just a feminist who supported women’s emancipation and equal status with men, but also a socialist thinker. Regarding the second question, I have shown the partial and in my view biased ways in which the various bodies of scholarly literature treat Sofia Nădejde. The communist historiography limited itself to identifying her as a socialist, an “activist” who promoted working-class and peasants’ rights, without acknowledgment of the feminist dimensions of her work, whereas the feminist CEU eTD Collection historiography neglected the socialist aspects of her work and life and presented her as a (gender or liberal) feminist only. By contrast, my thesis emphasized the importance of regarding Sofia Nădeje in her historical context, which was that of socialist feminism. Romanian Political Science Review vol. XXI, no. 1 2021 The end of the Cold War, and the extinction of communism both as an ideology and a practice of government, not only have made possible an unparalleled experiment in building a democratic order in Central and Eastern Europe, but have opened up a most extraordinary intellectual opportunity: to understand, compare and eventually appraise what had previously been neither understandable nor comparable. Studia Politica. Romanian Political Science Review was established in the realization that the problems and concerns of both new and old democracies are beginning to converge. The journal fosters the work of the first generations of Romanian political scientists permeated by a sense of critical engagement with European and American intellectual and political traditions that inspired and explained the modern notions of democracy, pluralism, political liberty, individual freedom, and civil rights. Believing that ideas do matter, the Editors share a common commitment as intellectuals and scholars to try to shed light on the major political problems facing Romania, a country that has recently undergone unprecedented political and social changes. They think of Studia Politica. Romanian Political Science Review as a challenge and a mandate to be involved in scholarly issues of fundamental importance, related not only to the democratization of Romanian polity and politics, to the “great transformation” that is taking place in Central and Eastern Europe, but also to the make-over of the assumptions and prospects of their discipline. They hope to be joined in by those scholars in other countries who feel that the demise of communism calls for a new political science able to reassess the very foundations of democratic ideals and procedures.

Pieties of the Nation: Romanian neo-protestants in the interwar struggle for religious and national identity by Iemima Daniela Ploscariu Submitted to Central European University Department of History In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Constantin Iordachi Second Reader: Vlad Naumescu CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2015 “Copyright in the text of this thesis rests with the Author. Further copies made in accordance with such instructions may not be made without the written permission of the Author.” CEU eTD Collection i Abstract Neo-protestants (Seventh-Day Adventists, Baptists, Brethren, and Pentecostals) were the fastest growing among the religious minorities in interwar Romania. The American, Hungarian, German, and other European influences on these groups and their increasing success led government officials and the Romanian Orthodox Church to look on them with suspicion and to challenge them with accusations of being socially deviant sects or foreign pawns. Neo- protestants presented themselves as loyal Romanians while still maintaining close relationships with ethnic minorities of the same faith within the country and abroad. The debates on the identity of these groups and the “competition for souls” that occurred in society demonstrate neo- protestants' vision of Romanian national identity challenging the accepted interwar arguments for what it meant to be Romanian.

  • The Behavioural Dynamics of Romania's Foreign Policy In
THE BEHAVIOURAL DYNAMICS OF ROMANIA’S FOREIGN POLICY IN THE LATE 1990s: THE DRIVE FOR SECURITY AND THE POLITICS OF VOLUNTARY SERVITUDE Eduard Rudolf ROTH Abstract. This article investigates the nature, the magnitude and the impact of the exogenously articulated preferences in the articulation of Romania’s foreign policy agenda and behavioural dynamics during the period 1996-2000. In this context, the manuscript will explore Romania’s NATO and (to a lesser extent) EU accession bids, within an analytical framework defined by an overlapped interplay of heterochthonous influences, while trying to set out for further understanding how domestic preferences can act as a transmission belt and impact on foreign policy change in small and medium states. Keywords: Romanian foreign policy, NATO enlargement, EU enlargement, Russian-Romanian relations, Romanian-NATO relations, Romania-EU relations 1. Introduction By 1995 – with the last stages of the first Yugoslav crisis confirming that Moscow cannot adequately get involved into complex security equations – and fearing the possible creation of a grey area between Russia and Western Europe, Romanian authorities embarked the country on a genuinely pro-Western path, putting a de facto end to the dual foreign policy focus, “ambivalent policy”,1 “double speak”2 or “politics of ambiguity” 3 which dominated Bucharest’s’ diplomatic exercise throughout the early 1990s. This spectral shift (which arguably occurred shortly after Romanian President Iliescu’s visit in Washington) wasn’t however the result of a newly-found democratic vocation of the indigenous government, but rather an expression of the conviction that such behaviour could help the indigenous administration in its attempts to secure the macro-stabilization of the country’s unreformed economy and to acquire security guarantees in order to mitigate the effects of the political and geographical pressures generated by the Transdniestrian and Yugoslav conflicts, or by the allegedly irredentist undertones of Budapest’s foreign policy praxis.

PARALLEL RUPTURES: JEWS OF BESSARABIA AND TRANSNISTRIA BETWEEN ROMANIAN NATIONALISM AND SOVIET COMMUNISM, 1918-1940 BY DMITRY TARTAKOVSKY DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2009 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Mark D. Steinberg, Chair Professor Keith Hitchins Professor Diane P. Koenker Professor Harriet Murav Assistant Professor Eugene Avrutin Abstract ―Parallel Ruptures: Jews of Bessarabia and Transnistria between Romanian Nationalism and Soviet Communism, 1918-1940,‖ explores the political and social debates that took place in Jewish communities in Romanian-held Bessarabia and the Moldovan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic during the interwar era. Both had been part of the Russian Pale of Settlement until its dissolution in 1917; they were then divided by the Romanian Army‘s occupation of Bessarabia in 1918 with the establishment of a well-guarded border along the Dniester River between two newly-formed states, Greater Romania and the Soviet Union. At its core, the project focuses in comparative context on the traumatic and multi-faceted confrontation with these two modernizing states: exclusion, discrimination and growing violence in Bessarabia; destruction of religious tradition, agricultural resettlement, and socialist re-education and assimilation in Soviet Transnistria. It examines also the similarities in both states‘ striving to create model subjects usable by the homeland, as well as commonalities within Jewish responses on both sides of the border. Contacts between Jews on either side of the border remained significant after 1918 despite the efforts of both states to curb them, thereby necessitating a transnational view in order to examine Jewish political and social life in borderland regions.

He had a transit visa to “Belgium-France”, bearing the date 24 February 1947 1. He had obtained the visa at the General Consulate of Great Britain in Istanbul, Galata. The British clerk crossed out with his pen “valid for one day” and wrote “one month”. Ghi ță Ionescu had to hurry. On 22 March 1947, his diplomatic passport was set to expire 2. He had its validity extended by the chargé d'affaires at the Romanian legation in Ankara. He had just been recalled by Alexandru Cretzianu, Romania's Minister Plenipotentiary in Turkey. Shortly after, a new ambassador to Ankara was appointed, convenient to the Petru Groza government, which was dominated by communists. Most likely, his chances of carrying on as economic adviser at the Romanian legation in Turkey's capital, and therefore of having his passport renewed, were rather slim, and the political events in Bucharest did not inspire optimism, since Ghi ță Ionescu made meticulous preparations to head over the the West.
