Questi due Indici, storico e filologico; il primo, compilato da Alessandro Gherardi con quella diligenza e precisione che il solo abito dei coscienziosi studii e la sicura dottrina non danno, se non vi si aggiunge l'affetto di una lunga e costante amicizia; l'altro, nel quale fui efficacemente aiutato pur da un mio affezionato amico, e antico discepolo, dottor Curzio Mazzi; spero appagheranno un voto espresso da molti benevoli eslimatori del mio libro, né saranno sgraditi ai con- sultatori che ho veduto in questi anni, citato o no, abbondarmi anche fra i meno benevoli. V Indice storico abbraccia tutta intiera l'opera mia: cioè i venti capitoli che propriamente ne costituiscono il corpo, la Giunta pole- mica che sussegue ad essi (e questa è la materia del primo volume in due parti diviso), poi il Commento al testo della Cronica e l'Ap- pendice al Commento che sono nel volume secondo. Non vi è com- presa la Cronica, la quale in quel secondo volume ha Indice suo proprio. V Indice filologico è stato compilato principalmente sul mio Com- mento alla Cronica (voi. II, pag. 1-423) e alle Rime (voi . I, pag. 320-390); raccogliendovi poi quant' altro di attinente a lingua ebbi occasione di venire osservando nelle altre parti dell'opera, ed infine quel che nella Giunta polemica mi trovai a dover ribattere, sotto la rubrica Filologia, contro le recenti opinioni e argomentazioni intorno alla Istoria di VI AVVERTENZA. Dino. Sono in esso registrate tutte quelle voci le quali, sia nel Com- mento sia altrove, abbiano avuta illustrazione; il che è più frequen- temente avvenuto di voci antiche o in senso storico. Se non che strada facendo, mi ò occorso altresì raccoglierne altre meno espres- samente illustrate ma alle quali comecchessia si accenna, od anche semplicemente a cui porgono testiinonianza ed esempio notabili o la Cronica o le Rime o alcun altro degli antichi testi nelle mie illu- strazioni addotti. Credo che di ciò mi avranno qualche gratitudine per lo meno i lessicografi, confratelli miei dilettissimi; ben inteso, che io con ciò non prometto loro un vero e proprio spoglio del testo (intendo, specialmente, della Cronici/)^ e neanche, per quelle tali voci d'occasione, una enumerazione sempre compiuta di tutti quanti gli esempi che esso ne offre. II. Ho aggiunto, poiché questa stampa degli Indici me ne dava oc- casione, il testo della Cronica secondo il codice del secolo XV, che fu gìh ashburnhamiano, e innanzi pucciano, e anticamente, come i miei lettori sanno,* dei Pandolfini; ora, insieme con gli altri italiani della biblioteca di lord Ashburnham, racquistati dal nostro Governo all'Italia, si conserva nella Biblioteca Laurenziana. Di questo codice, che è di tutti il più antico e il progenitore, dissi nella Prefazione al secondo volume,^ non aver io potuto se non consultarlo sommariamente per cortesia del nobile Lord che allora lo possedeva e del professore Paolo Meyer; e ne detti ivi stesso la de- scrizione e il facsimile. Alla descrizione aggiungo ora, che esso è cartaceo,. in-4° piccolo, legato modernamente in pergamena, con cartellino dì pelle sul dorso scrittovi in oro « Lion. Aret. Vita di » Dante ec. »; di carte 128, numerate modernamente con lapis, delle quali son bianche le carte 14-1 G, 79-80, 127-128. Da e. 1 a 13 con- tiene la Vita di Dante scritta da Leonardo Aretino. Da e. 17 a 78, la Cap. XVIII : a pag. 720-2 i, 767 segg., del voi. I. A pag. xix-xxii. AVVERTENZA. VII Cronica di Dino Compagni, quale è da me data nel presente volu- metto, e che in fine ha « Morì dino còpagni adi xxvi di febraio 1323 » sepulto T scà trinità Et. e rilracla questa dalla sua propria». Da e. 81 a 126, il Libro terzo della Cronica di Domenico di Lionardo Bo- ninsegni; in fine alla quale si legge: « Mori domenico di lionardo )) boninsegni auctore di questa chronaca la quale e rilracta dalla » sua propria adi xvi dì gieiiaìo 1465 deta d'aili. lxxxi. et è se- » pulto r santa m."* nouella. » Il codice, lutto d'una medesima mano, è del secolo XV, alla seconda metà del quale lo riferisce la trascrizione (e relativa annotazione finale) del Libro terzo del Bonin- segni : perciò anteriore al codice magliabechiano del 1514, di non più che una quarantina d'anni. Ambedue le riferite annotazioni finali sono in carattere più piccolo ma della medesima mano che ha scritto lutto il codice: ciò deve a qualsiasi paleografo resultare tanto certo (seb- bene altri affermi il contrario), quanto sicura la lezione dì esse an- notazioni.' Il codice è in buone condizioni e di facile lettura, seb- bene qua e là parecchie sue carte siano leggermente macchiate d'umidità. Sarebbe, per lo meno, curiosità onesta desiderar di conoscere da chi, in servizio di chi, il codice fosse scritto. Ma è piuttosto un acuirla, che appagarla, dire, ed è ciò solo che io posso dire, come di questa mano medesima, senza dubbio fiorentina, sono, indicatimi cor- tesemente dal professore F. Novali, quattro codici laurenziani (Plut.XC mp., XLI, 1, 2f e S, gaddiani; Conventi soppressi, 452); non che un altro ' Il signore H. Bresslau, nello scritto di cui dovrò occuparmi qui appresso, ac- cetta la lezione, ma non la identità (che il Meyer aveva data per probabile) della scrit- tura: e, a proposito della frase « ritratta dalla sua propria », conclude: «Non può, a » mio avviso, dubitarsi che colui il quale aggiunse la detta annotazione finale a que- » sta Cronaca fosse persuaso ch'ella fosse fatta secondo il manoscritto originale di » Dino. » Ossia dicasi, che il trascrittore e annotatore, unus et idem, era persuaso d'aver avuto dinanzi il manoscritto originale di Dino. Nel qual caso aggiungasi, che quattrocento anni dopo il pover uomo é stato convinto d'errore, principalmente per la ragione che quel manoscritto originale non esiste più. — Del resto, io avevo fatto sulla prima origine di quell'annotazione (passata, notisi, a mano a mano di codice in codice), e sulle sue relazioni con l'autografo del Compagni, una diversa ipotesi (cap. XVIII, a pag. 724-28 del voi. I), che il signor Bresslau chiama «una combina- » zione sostenuta, più che con argomenti scientifici, con riflessioni sentimentali»; ossia non tiene conto alcuno della parte positiva e di fatto di quel mio, sia pur dubi- tabile, argomentare. Il che non so se, quanto è comodo, sia altrettanto scientifico. E rispetto ai «due fatti pe' quali naufraga», secondo lui, la suddetta mia ipotesi, l'uno, cioè la diversità di grafia fra testo e annotazione, ripeto che non sussiste; l'altro, già da me avvertito nelle ultime linee della citata pag. 728 (nota 3), non ha alcun valore per 1' assunto del signor Bresslau. vili AVVERTENZA. della Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli (F. Lo scrittore non doveva essere persona erudita, perchè, siccome osserva il Bandini, ^ pecca di scorrezione. I suddetti codici hanno con 1' ashburnhamiano identità altresì di se- sto, di carta, di margine. Per chi pensasse alla possibilità che anche il pucciano ashburnhamiano, prima che ai Pandolfini, appartenesse ai Gaddi, avverto che esso non è registrato nel Catalogo della Gaddiana, compilato da Giovanni Targioni prima che nel 1755 i millecentodieci manoscritti di quella insigne biblioteca fossero acquistati dalla Reg- genza e distribuiti fra la Laurenziana la Magliabechiana e l' Archivio ^ delle Riformagioni. Riproduco fedelmente T ashburnhamiano, notando a pie di pa- gina le differenze, quasi tutte di forma semplicemente o di grafia, della lezione già data da me : differenze derivanti per la maggior parte dalla preferenza che io concessi in ciò al codice magliabe- chiano del 1514, nel quale la mano popolana di Noferi Busini si lasciò andare alle forme fiorentine più paesane e idiomatiche. La nuova le- zione che ora do è quale ci è porta dal codice quattrocentistico, po- nendovi io soltanto ciò che esso, naturalmente, non porge, cioè la punteggiatura secondo sintassi; con piccola anzi nessuna fatica, per- chè tale punteggiatura è rimasta (non mutandosi il testo) tal e quale quella della mia edizione, salvo i rarissimi casi che si troveranno da me, luogo per luogo, notati, o semplicemente fra le altre varianti, o talvolta anco indicati con speciale postilla. Rari pure sono i casi di varietà sostanziale di lezione, e i più notabili sono altresì rilevati nelle postille sparse qua e là a pie di pagina: altre delle quali poi giustificano lo aver io conservata, anche contro il codice (poiché la mia edizione non è diplomatica ma critica), la lezione volgata, altre richiamano 1' attenzione del lettore a qualche passo controverso os- servabile e al luogo respettivo del mio Commento. 11 Commento poi, per ciò che concerne interpetrazione letterale e illustrazione sto- ' Catalogus codicum latinorum Bibliothecae Laurentianae ; 111,559-573. THE POLITICAL PERSECUTION OF A POET A Detail of Dante's Exile By Jason Ader John Poling History 101 April 2012 Durante degli Alighieri, known throughout the world as simply Dante, was a fourteenth century Italian poet, philosopher, literary theorist, and politician. He is best known for his epic Commedia, which was later dubbed The Divine Comedy. Commedia is generally considered the greatest Italian literary work and a masterpiece of world literature.1 Due to the turbulent political atmosphere of his time and place, Dante spent over a third of his life living in exile. This paper will explore the details of Dante's exile and the influence that it had upon his work. Dante was born in Florence around 1265 to an aristocratic family of moderate wealth and status. Dante's father was a notary, and Dante was the only child of his father's first marriage. Dante's mother died when he was about thirteen years old. His father then remarried and his second wife bore another son and two daughters before he too died when Dante was about eighteen.2 It is thought that at around six years of age Dante entered school.

Drawing on early chronicles and biographies, modern historical research and biographical criticism, and the poet’s own writings, I construct this narrative of “Dante’s Political Life” for the milestone commemoration of his death. Big Man in the Cosmos A giant in the world of which he wrote, laurel-crowned Dante stands holding his Divine Comedy open to the first lines: "Midway this way of life we're bound upon, / I woke to find myself in a dark wood, / Where the right road was wholly lost and gone." Of course, his copy reads in Italian. Dante was the first major writer in Christendom to pen lofty literature in everyday language rather than in formal Latin. Coming 'Round the Mountain Behind Dante sits multi-tiered Mount Purgatory. An angel guards the gate, which stands atop three steps: white marble for confession, cracked black stone for contrition, and red porphyry for Christ's blood sacrifice. With his sword, the angel marks each penitent's forehead with seven p's (from Latin peccatum, "sin") for the Seven Deadly Sins. When these wounds are washed away by penance, the soul may enter earthly paradise at the mountain's summit. Starry Heights In Paradiso, the third section of the Comedy, Dante visits the planets and constellations where blessed souls dwell. The celestial spheres look vague in this painting, but Dante had great interest in astronomy. One of his astronomical references still puzzles scholars. He notes "four stars, the same / The first men saw, and since, no living eye" (Purgatorio, I.23-24), apparently in reference to the Southern Cross. But that constellation was last visible at Dante's latitude (thanks to the earth's wobbly axis) in 3000 B.C., and no one else wrote about it in Europe until after Amerigo Vespucci's voyage in 1501.

    “Dante Alighieri” Catholic Encyclopedia Italian poet, born at Florence, 1265; died at Ravenna, Italy, 14 September, 1321. His own statement in the "Paradiso" (xxii, 112-117) that he was born when the sun was in Gemini, fixes his birthday between 18 May and 17 June. He was the son of Alighiero di Bellincione Alighieri, a notary belonging to an ancient but decadent Guelph family, by his first wife, Bella, who was possibly a daughter of Durante di Scolaio Abati, a Ghibelline noble. A few months after the poet's birth, the victory of Charles of Anjou over King Manfred at Benevento (26 February, 1266) ended the power of the empire in Italy, placed a French dynasty upon the throne of Naples, and secured the predominance of the Guelphs in Tuscany. Dante thus grew up amidst the triumphs of the Florentine democracy, in which he took some share fighting in the front rank of the Guelph cavalry at the battle of Campaldino (11 June, 1289), when the Tuscan Ghibellines were defeated by the forces of the Guelph league, of which Florence was the head. This victory was followed by a reformation of the Florentine constitution, associated with the name of Giano della Bella, a great-hearted noble who had joined the people. By the Ordinances of Justice (1293) all nobles and magnates were more strictly excluded from the government, and subjected to severe penalties for offences against plebeians. To take any part in public life, it was necessary to be enrolled in one or other of the "Arts" (the guilds in which the burghers and artisans were banded together), and accordingly Dante matriculated in the guild of physicians and apothecaries.

    A Hell of One’s Own: Combat Trauma in Dante’s Inferno Patrick Whalen Must you have battle in your heart forever? —Odyssey 12:132 ante Alighieri was twenty-four years old in 1289 when he saw combat in the Battle of Campaldino as a “feditore”, a cavalry soldier from Florence.1 From what we D know of the battle,2 Dante’s unit would have been one of the first to be engaged by the oncoming Aretine cavalry, and for the first several minutes of the battle, Dante would have faced the prospect of imminent death when he saw the men and horses of his unit dying as their resistance crumbled before the Aretine’s charge. The historian Herbert Oerter notes that the catastrophe of this initial attack actually saved the Florentine forces, and likely Dante with them, because it caused Corso Donati, the flamboyant commander of the Florentine reserves, to disregard his orders and commit to the battle immediately. His orders, on pain of death, were to wait for a signal from one of the senior officers, Guillaume de Durfort. But Guillaume was dying— bleeding out on the plain—and would never give the signal. As it happened, Corso’s reserve position was in defilade to the attacking Aretine’s northern flank. When Corso attacked, his cavalry pierced the unexpecting and unprotected flank of the Aretine force, causing massive chaos and an almost immediate disintegration of the Aretine attack. The Root Of All Evil: Civic Genealogy From Brunetto To Dante Abstract ABSTRACT THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL: CIVIC GENEALOGY FROM BRUNETTO TO DANTE Chelsea A. Pomponio Kevin Brownlee From the thirteenth century well into the Renaissance, the legend of Florence’s origins, which cast Fiesole as the antithesis of Florentine values, was continuously rewritten to reflect the changing nature of Tuscan society. Modern criticism has tended to dismiss the legend of Florence as a purely literary conceit that bore little relation to contemporary issues. Tracing the origins of the legend in the chronicles of the Duecento to its variants in the works of Brunetto Latini and Dante Alighieri, I contend that the legend was instead a highly adaptive mode of legitimation that proved crucial in the negotiation of medieval Florentine identity. My research reveals that the legend could be continually rewritten to serve the interests of collective and individual authorities. Versions of the legend were crafted to support both republican Guelfs and imperial Ghibellines; to curry favor with the Angevin rulers of Florence and to advance an ethnocentric policy against immigrants; to support the feudal system of privilege and to condemn elite misrule; to denounce the mercantile value of profit and ot praise economic freedom.

Cornell University 2010 This dissertation examines the role of secret practices of opposition in the urban politics of Florence between 1340 and 1382. It is based on a wide variety of printed and archival sources, including chronicles, judicial records, government enactments, the records of consultative assemblies, statutes, chancery letters, tax records, private diaries and account books, and the ad hoc opinions (consilia) of jurists. Over the course of four chapters, it presents three major arguments: (1) Conspiracy, a central mechanism of political change and the predominant expression of political dissent in the city, remained primarily a function of the factionalism that had shattered the medieval commune, although it was now practiced not as open warfare but secret resistance. (2) Conspiracies were especially common when the city was ruled by popular governments, which faced almost constant conspiratorial resistance from elite factions that been expelled from the city or had had their political power restricted, while also inspiring increased worker unrest and secret labor organization. (3) Although historians have often located the origins of the “state” in the late medieval and early Renaissance cities of northern and central Italy, the prevalence of secret political opposition, the strength of conspirators and their allies, and the ability of conspiratorial networks, large worker congregations, and even powerful families to vie with weak regimes for power and legitimacy seriously calls this into question.
