Eight of the marine Annex 1 habitats occur in Danish waters. Marine Natura 2000 sites where Annex 1 habitats are the reason or part of the reason for the designation cover 10,584 km2 or 74,7% of the total area covered by the Danish Natura 2000 network. The report discusses the weaknesses of the defi nitions of the marine Annex 1 habitats. These habitats are defi ned primarily on the basis of geomorphology and not biology. Most (perhaps all) of the marine Annex 1 habitats encompass different biological communities. These should be defi ned or at least treated as separate habitats, each with their own set of indicators and thresholds. As a solution to this prob- lem, it is proposed to divide the Annex 1 habitats into smaller often biologically founded units, called sub-features. The biological content of a habitat is governed by a large number of natural factors such as depth, illumination, salinity, distance to nutrient sources, bottom type, and exposure to wind and currents. Therefore, it can be diffi cult, if not impossible, to identify meaningful universally applicable biological indicators for assessing the conserva- tion status of the Annex 1 habitats. The choice of indicators and their thresholds may, therefore, be applicable in certain water types only or even be site-specifi c. All marine habitats are negatively infl uenced by human activities, and assessments of Danish marine areas state that the quality of the ecosys- tems in general is not acceptable. A reduction of pressure from many of the anthropogenic pressure factors will have a positive effect on the structure and functioning of the Annex 1 habitats. Other pressure fac- tors exist, like introduction of invasive non-indigenous species, which may result in irreversible negative impacts. The development of a quality assessment system for marine Annex 1 habitats should, ideally, be based on knowledge of the habitats dis- tribution, extent, structure, and functioning and of the occurrence of characteristic species in the absence of known anthropogenic pressure factors. However we face the problem that description of impact of pressure factors in scientifi c and other types of literature is a rather recent thing for Danish marine waters.

Here we report on recent occurrences of M. leidyi in Danish waters, observed partly by ourselves and other biologists, partly by beach guests, boat owners and amateur divers. The earliest record of M. leidyi is from August 2005 and the early summer of 2006, and in 2007, the earliest records are from February and March, from the northern Little Belt and Kerteminde Bay. In the period April to June, the density of M. leidyi remained very low in the Great Belt, but numerous reports indicate that the ctenophore in July to September was widely distributed in all inner Danish waters, and "mass occurrences" have been reported from certain areas.

Bestanden ved Skagen er en selvstændig bestand, som holder sig adskilt bestandene i de indre farvande samt det sydlige Nordsø. Med 2692 km2 er området næsten så stort som Fyn og det største af de nyudpegede habitatområder på havet. Arealet strækker sig langs kysten fra Hirtshals til Skagens Gren og videre halvvejs til Sverige. Mod nord går det en tredjedel af vejen mod Norge. Gule Rev: Et større sammenhængende stenrevsområde, på ca. 471 km² - 25 % større end Mors Et fiskerigt område, der består af markante stenrev afvekslende med sandede og stenede områder. Store Rev: En række markante stenrev afvekslende med sandede og stenede områder, ca. 109 km2. Fire steder er der boblerev - de eneste kendte i Nordsøen. Boblerevene er som klipper og søjler opstået ved sammenkitning af sandsten dannet af mikroorganismer. De er fulde af små rør og huller, som frigiver gasser, methan, som sandsynligvis stammer fra mikroorganismers nedbrydning af gammelt plantemateriale. Udvidelser: Kims Ryg og navneændring til Kims Top: Området med bla. den såkaldte Kinesiske Mur udvides med 237 km2 og bliver næsten 10 gange så stort. Ligger centralt i Kattegat mellem Anholt og Læsø. Kims Ryg er opbygget af store stablede sten/blokke, der rejser sig 8-10 meter over den omgivende havbund i flere kilometers længde - meget sjældent i danske farvande. The commercially most important fishery was for herring, Clupea harengus, which spawned in the Limfjord. This fishery underwent large changes in these centuries. High landings occurred in two periods in the early 18th and again in the early 19th centuries, when 4000–8000 metric tonnes were caught annually. In 1830, the fishery collapsed and landings were <1000 tonnes until the 1910s. Even during the 20th century using modern fishing techniques, the herring fishery never exceeded 7000 tonnes. The collapse was most likely due to unsustainable fishing practices (direct impacts on adults, juveniles, larvae and eggs). The second most important fishery of the Limfjord was the eel fishery.

Research Context & Objectives The Limfjord is a stretch of water that runs east-west across the Jutland peninsula in Denmark. Prior to 1825 it was an estuary that only connected to the open sea at its eastern (Kattegat) end. However, during a winter storm in 1825, Agger Tange, an isthmus separating the Limfjord from the North Sea, was breached and salt water intruded into the erstwhile brackish fjord. This altered the salinity, hydrography and nutrient composition of the water and drastically changed the fjord’s fisheries. The research that generated Dataset 51 focuses on the long-term development of the herring fishery, the largest of the Limfjord’s fisheries in the early modern era.
