To help students to understand the role of music in today’s contemporary pop culture. To help students understand the relationship of the musician/artist to pop culture. To help students to identify the sounds of the different genres of popular music.

Graduate Book Report (MUS 517 only): Choose a book. Book should discuss a genre or an artist (rather than a survey book). Have it approved by Dr. Marcone by December 29. Write a synopsis of book. Relate a statement from the book to a statement from Garofalo, agreeing or disagreeing. Bibliography (if needed) and notes must be included. Due Date: January 9.
