In the second, from 1988, we found the state couldn't meet our needs, and we were unable to meet them ourselves. Since 1993 we no longer rely on the state because we know that it cannot deliver what we need. -

Abstract The problem facing the Cuban Revolution after 1959 was how to increase productive capacity and labour productivity, in conditions of underdevelopment and in transition to socialism, without relying on capitalist mechanisms that would undermine the formation of new consciousness and social relations integral to communism. Locating Guevara’s economic analysis at the heart of the research, the thesis examines policies and development strategies formulated to meet this challenge, thereby refuting the mainstream view that his emphasis on consciousness was idealist. Rather, it was intrinsic and instrumental to the economic philosophy and strategy for social change advocated. -
Cuba and Castro: Beyond the Battle of Ideas
CHAPTER 4 Cuba and Castro: Beyond the “Battle of Ideas” Mauricio A. Font Abstract: This paper explores the logic, causes, and priorities of the “Battle of Ideas” in part through an analysis of Fidel Castro’s published statements in Reflexiones since 2006. This study suggests that this campaign harkens back to past efforts of the regime to reinforce ideological orthodoxy and revolutionary renewal through the regime’s fundamental belief in the power of ideology to consolidate political power. Out of the Special Period During the second half of the 1990s, Cuban authorities began to apply a series of countermeasures to the reform process adopted in the Special Period, seemingly confident that they had surmounted the worst of the economic crisis of the early decade. Already by 1995 the regime had defined the limits of the reform process and restricted some of the liberal- izing measures, blaming them for growing social problems. By the end of the turn of the century, Fidel Castro was framing his own thoughts and perspective as the “Battle of Ideas.” He and the hardliners were ready for a renewal of the traditional Cuban model and initiated specific steps and ideas in that regard. Through 2006, the year Fidel Castro fell gravely ill, the “Battle of Ideas” campaign subsumed many initiatives to supplant the Special Period. This paper explores the role of the “Battle of Ideas” in opening a new chapter in the history of the Cuban revolution. The broader issue is how to characterize the timing, properties, and dynamics of the post Special Period years. An important issue is the extent to which a new coherent approach was launched in the early 2000s. -

The first edition of Más allá de las palabras (2004), to cite just one example of an intermediate Spanish language textbook, uses the trovistas Pablo Milanés and Silvio Rodríguez as examples of “contemporary” Cuban musical artists (204). Books on Cuba aimed at monolingual English speakers also depend largely on the nueva trova when attempting to present Cuba’s current musical production. The Cuba Reader: History, Culture, Politics (2003), an anthology of texts dating back to Columbus, uses samples from Silvio Rodríguez’s music on two occasions, in a chapter dedicated to the international aspects and impact of the Cuban Revolution and once again in a chapter dedicated to Cuba after the fall of the Soviet Union. Without discounting the artistic merit and endurance of the nueva trova or the numerous trovistas , the use of this music (the heyday of which was primarily in the 1960s to early 1980s) as a cultural marker for Cuban culture today seems distinctly anachronistic. It would be analogous to using music from World War II era United States to describe the events and sentiments of the 1960s. -

Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. Notes Introduction 1. For a more in- depth discussion of patriarchy and nationalism, see Kim’s analysis of the argument of Gates (2005, 16) and Garcia (1997). 2. Omi and Winant (1986) trace the historical development of privilege tied to white- ness but also foreground discussions of race to contest claims that only those in power— that is, those considered white— can be racist. Omi and Winant argue that whenever the construct of race is used to establish in and out groups and hierarchies of power, irrespective of who perpetrates it, racism has occurred. In “Latino Racial Formation,” De Genova and Ramos-Zayas (2003b) further develop the ideas of history and context in terms of US Latinos in their argument that US imperialism and discrimination, more than any other factors, have influenced Latino racializa- tion and thus contributed to the creation of a third pseudoracial group along the black/white continuum that has historically marked US race relations. The research of Omi and Winant and De Genova and Ramos- Zayas coincides with the study of gender, particularly masculinity, in its emphasis on the shifting nature of constructs such as race and gender as well as its recognition of the different experiences of gendered history predicated upon male and female bodies of people of color. 3. In terms of the experience of sexuality through the body, Rodríguez’s memoir (1981) underscores the fact that perceptions of one’s body by the self and others depend heavily on the physical context in which an individual body is found as well as on one’s own perceptions of pride and shame based on notions of race and desire. -

The majority of these studies have focused on the interaction between a local language and a non-local language. In this project, I propose an analysis of the mixture of two world languages (Spanish and English), which can be categorised as both local and non-local. I do this through the analysis of the enormously successful reggaeton genre, which is characterised by its use of Spanglish. I used two data types to inform my research: a corpus of code-switching instances in top 20 reggaeton songs, and a questionnaire on attitudes towards Spanglish in general and in music. I collected 200 answers to the questionnaire – half from American English-speakers, and the other half from Spanish-speaking Hispanics of various nationalities. -
