The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. Your journey from colonial Congo to The United States was not a voyage made in vain. I always respected your ability as a rapper, but there was a time where I would not even place you in my list of top ten rappers. That was because I did not know your story. Listening to your Black Album convinced me that I need to know your story and sparked the idea for this dissertation. I see us opposite sides of the same coin and realize that a complete story of any person cannot be told until the coin is flipped. My respect for you has grown through this iii process and I thank you for your efforts to make sure that multiple stories of the American experience are told. To my children: Saafi, Ndeji, and Yenga, you are the reason I wake up every day and work as hard as possible to make this world a better place. Nothing you will ever learn from me will be equal to all that I learn and continue to learn from you. None of you were even born when I started this doctoral journey but each time one of you came into my life, my motivation grew to continue on. I literally wrote much of this dissertation with you sleeping on my lap (as you are right now Yenga). You are powerful beyond your measure and know that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to if you believe in yourself. Remember that life does not care about your excuses, only your results. They never stopped to worry about the realities in this country that spread poverty and racism and gun violence and hatred of women and drug use and unemployment. People can act like rappers spread these things, but that is not true. Our lives are not rotten or worthless just because that’s what people say about the real estate that we were raised on. In fact, our lives may be even more worthy of study because we succeeded despite the promises of failure seeping out from behind the peeling paint on the walls of every apartment in every project.1 -Jay-Z2 Introduction In the shadows of the lives of many rappers who grew up in impoverished communities in the 1960s, lie stories of creativity and despair born from a struggle against the force of adverse circumstance: the struggle for attention in an overcrowded classroom; the struggle to find a unique and authentic voice and form of expression; the struggle to develop a talent and a capacity to rescue families from the ravages of poverty.

All taboo words consisted of ephitet, obscenity, vulgarity and profanity appeared in the movie. The four kinds of taboo words applied in movie Bad Boys 2 were the total words taboo in the movie were 32, ephitets were 7 (22%), propanity were 12 (37%), vulgarity were 5 (16%), and obscenity were 8 times (25%). The most dominant kinds of taboo words used in movie Bad Boys 2 were propanity with 12 (37%). There were four functions of taboo words applied in movie Bad Boys 2. The total function of taboo words were 32, to show contempt was 17 (53%), to draw attention to oneself was 8 appeared (25%), to be provocative was 5 appeared (16%) and to muck authority with 2 appeared (6%).

The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998).

    HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what brought you to hot Arizona? Bil Keane: Well, it was a TWA plane. I worked on the Philadelphia Bulletin for 15 years after I got out of the army in 1945. It was just before then end of 1958 that I had been bothered each year with allergies. I would sneeze in the summertime and mainly in the spring. Then it got in to be in the fall, then spring, summer and fall. The doctor would always prescribe at that time something that would alleviate it. At the Bulletin I was doing a regular comic and I was editor of their Fun Book. I had a nine to five job there and we lived in Roslyn which was outside Philadelphia and it was one hour and a half commute on the train and subway. I was selling a feature to the newspapers called Channel Chuckles, which was the little cartoon about television which I enjoyed doing.

Bradley OutKast Class Syllabus OutKast Course Description and Objectives Pre-requisite: ENGL1102 Preferred Pre-requisites: ENGL2300, AADS1102 In 1995, Atlanta, GA duo OutKast attended the Source Hip Hop Awards where they won the award for Best New Duo. Mostly attended by bi-coastal rappers and hip hop enthusiasts, OutKast was booed off the stage. OutKast member Andre Benjamin, clearly frustrated, emphatically declared what is now known as the rallying cry for young black southerners: “the south got something to say.” For this course, we will use OutKast’s body of work as a case study questioning how we recognize race and identity in the American south after the Civil Rights Movement. Using a variety of post-Civil Rights era texts including film, fiction, criticism, and music, students will interrogate OutKast’s music as the foundation of what the instructor theorizes as “the hip hop south,” the southern black social-cultural landscape in place over the last 25 years. Objectives 1. To develop and utilize a multidisciplinary critical framework to successfully engage with conversations revolving around contemporary identity politics and (southern) popular culture 2. To challenge students to engage with unfamiliar texts, cultural expressions, and language in order to learn how to be socially and culturally sensitive and aware of modes of expression outside of their own experiences. 3.
