T Guest Lecturer in English MPMMSN Trusts College, Shoranur It is a quintessential human nature to compare, contrast and weigh the value of anything in the world. Perhaps it is our need to put order into an otherwise chaotic life that drives us to categorize everything. Our culture, tradition, art and literature are not exempted from this grading process. Thus it is quite natural that children’s literature got relegated to the peripheries of mainstream literature. This marginalization is universal and Malayalam literature too avoided it as trivial and childish. But now a days Children’s literature is gaining popularity in academic circles with many a scholars opening up new areas of researches in the field. Thus it would be meaningful to trace the trajectory of poems for children in Malayalam literature. A child’s acquaintance with poetry starts from the womb itself. This grows into much stronger relation as he/she is tucked into sleep with sweet lullabies by mother. Thus poetry is the first literature presented to a child.Offering comfort and happiness in rhythm and sounds these verses prepare the developing minds to receive longer forms of literature. But still there are debates regarding the characteristics of verses that can be categorized as children’s poems. His poetry and nationalist activism earned him the popular title of Bidrohi Kobi (Rebel Poet). Accomplishing a large body of acclaimed works through his life, Nazrul is officially recognised as the national poet of Bangladesh and commemorated in India. Born into a Muslim quazi (justice) family in India, Nazrul received religious education and worked as a muezzin at a local mosque. He learned of poetry, drama, and literature while working with theatrical groups. After serving in the British Indian Army, Nazrul established himself as a journalist in Kolkata (then Calcutta). He assailed the British Raj in India and preached revolution through his poetic works, such as 'Bidrohi' ('The Rebel') and 'Bhangar Gaan' ('The Song of Destruction'), as well as his publication 'Dhumketu' ('The Comet'). His impassioned activism in the Indian independence movement often led to his imprisonment by British authorities. While in prison, Nazrul wrote the 'Rajbandir Jabanbandi' ('Deposition of a Political Prisoner'). Exploring the life and conditions of the downtrodden masses of India, Nazrul worked for their emancipation. Nazrul's writings explore themes such as love, freedom, and revolution; he opposed all bigotry, including religious and gender. Throughout his career, Nazrul wrote short stories, novels, and essays but is best-known for his poems, in which he pioneered new forms such as Bengali ghazals. -

CHAPTER I Women Poets in Indian English Poetry: The Past and the Present Indian English poetry is now more than one hundred and seventy-five years old if we recall the date of the publication of Derozio’s book of poems entitled Poems. The book Poems appeared from Indian famous city of Calcutta in 1827. Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, born in 1809, was the son of an Indo-Portuguese father and an English mother. He was a conscious and curious child who started writing in his early age. He worked for few days as a clerk in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and at Bhagalpur on an indigo plantation. He tried to search his fortune in journalism also but could not succeed. He became a lecturer at Hindu College, Calcutta. Here, his free, frank and fearless personality bloomed and curious nature came forward. His spirit of inquiry, his passion-for ideas, his reformistic idealism and his romantic enthusiasm and temperament fired the imagination of many a students to a great extent. 2 Derozio was revolutionary not only in his iconoclastic ideas but also in his effort to initiate a new form of literary composition. Indian English poetry, in fact, has offered over the period of one hundred and seventy-five years a chequered history of growth and development that continuously made, unmade and remade itself through constant experiments in matters of themes and styles. Indian English poetry has undergone several phases of experimentations resulting in varied phenomena a ceaseless poetic activities that vouch for the inner strength of the succeeding poets. The social reforms, the individual ecstasies^ the agonies of living personae as well as mythical characters, love and nature, rejuvenation of legends and metaphysical queries are some of the themes that have been treated and projected by Indian English poets during both the pre-Independence and post-Independence periods. -

Poetic Associations: The Nineteenth-Century English Poetry Collection of Dr. Gerald N. Wachs Poetry, usually considered a solitary art, is often produced within social circles and communities, shaped by friendships, rivalries, and collaborations. The same can be said of book collecting, an activity at once completely individualistic and yet pursued within a network of other collectors, booksellers, librarians, scholarly and collecting organizations. Poets read and revise each other’s drafts, dedicate their works to each other, review them, and send each other copies of their publications, sometimes with personal inscriptions. Book collecting also creates deep friendships and stiff competition. The nineteenth-century English poetry collection of Dr. Gerald N. Wachs (1937-2013) was formed in close association with bookseller Stephen Weissman and within a circle of bibliophilic and scholarly associations as well as other collec- tors and dealers, many vying for the same material. The Wachs collection, which numbers nearly 900 titles, includes works published from the start of the age we now call Romantic to the beginning of the twentieth century. The collection was started in 1970 and grew over a period of 40 years. It was guided throughout by Volume 3, covering 1800-1900, of The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (1969-77). Books selected for the Wachs collection are nearly all “special” copies: in splendid condition, often one of very few known copies, and many with extraordinary inscriptions that illustrate personal and poetic associations. It is difficult to single out representative examples from such a rich assemblage. Some are little- known works by famous authors, and often quite unimpressive in appearance. -

He is widely read and appreciated as a bilingual poet writing both in Bengali and English that has helped him to pocket many national and international awards including SAARC Literature Prize (India 2019), Ekushey Padak (2015), Poet of International Merit (USA 1995) and Bangla Academy Prize (1998) for literature. A critic, cultural activist, translator and academic by profession, Mr. Huda is an ardent lover of Bangabandhu and Father of the Nation is a reflection of his unconditional love and devotion for him. This paper focuses on how Sheikh Mujibur Rahman grew up from a promising school leader to the unanimous leader of the Bangalees, achieved the title “Bangabandhu”, and how his able and apt leadership helped to grow Bangladesh as a sovereign and independent nation.
