Dainzú-Macuilxóchitl is an expansive settlement that was an important part of the Prehispanic Zapotec tradition. Over 130 man-made terraces were mapped, all dating to the Late Classic period (500-900 A.D.), and a large terrace complex found at the summit of Cerro Danush is interpreted as the civic-ceremonial center of the site during that time. I argue that the Late Classic shift in civic-ceremonial focus away from Cerro Dainzú to Cerro Danush implies direct involvement at the site from the nearby urban center of Monte Albán. -

This phenomenon, influenced by complex religious beliefs, included several practices such as decapitation, cranial deformation, and the use of human cranial bones for skull mask manufacturing. Archaeological evidence suggests that all of these practices required specialized knowledge of skull base and upper cervical anatomy. The authors con- ducted a systematic search for information on skull base anatomical and surgical knowledge among Mesoamerican civilizations. A detailed exposition of these results is presented, along with some interesting information extracted from historical documents and pictorial codices to provide a better understanding of skull base surgical practices among these cultures. Paleoforensic evidence from the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan indicates that Aztec priests used a specialized decapitation technique, based on a deep anatomical knowledge. -

As a qroup they rank next to Quechua speakers of Peru and Equador as one of the most I impressive survivinq Amerindian linquistic and cultural units in the western hemisphere (Voqt 1969). As qeoqraphy and modern distribution suqqest, with the exception of the HUastecs, various Maya qroups have been in contact for many centuries. Linquists qenerally define three major subqroups of Mayan: l) Huastecan, I 2) Yucatecan and 3) southern Mayan. Today, Huastecan speakers are comprised of two linquistic units: l) Veracruzano, distributed alonq the tropical coastlands, and I 2) Potosino, spoken in the interior hiqhlands, correspondinq to the states of Veracruz, and San Luis Potosi, Mexico, respectively. Modern distribution of Huastacan speakers is represented by small, rather nucleated vestiqes of Precollllllbian territories: I "Only five towns in northern Veracruz and an equal nlllllber in Potosi could boast a population of l8 per cent or more Huastec speakinq inhabitants, and no town reqistered over 72 per cent. -

Masson* Resumen La variación en las manifestaciones del sobrenatural Cocijo revela múltiples dis- fraces de esta entidad, incluyendo una deidad formal, la encarnación del rayo y el compañero espiritual de individuos poderosos. El contexto de las imágenes de Cocijo en los sitios precolombinos del valle de Oaxaca es principalmente funerario, lo cual sugiere que los rituales que tenían que ver con esta entidad estaban vinculados con la conmemoración de los ancestros como medio importante de reconocer el poder basa- do en el linaje entre los líderes de la sociedad zapoteca. Aquí se argumenta que las escenas de estas efigies reflejan rituales congelados en una acción que refleja la comuni- cación con los ancestros y la transformación de humanos en Cocijos o viceversa. THE COCIJO SUPERNATURAL AND LINEAGE POWER IN ANCIENT ZAPOTEC SOCIETY Abstract Variations in the manifestation of the supernatural entity Cocijo reveal multiple guises, including a formal deity, the embodiment of lightning, and the spirit compan- ion of powerful individuals. The context of Cocijo images at Precolumbian sites in the valley of Oaxaca is primarily funerary, which suggests that rituals involving this entity were linked to ancestor commemoration as an important means of acknowledging lineage-based power in the leadership of Zapotec society. -

Aram Somalia's Judeao-Christian Heritage 3 SOMALIA'S JUDEAO-CHRISTIAN HERITAGE: A PRELIMINARY SURVEY Ben I. Aram* INTRODUCTION The history of Christianity in Somalia is considered to be very brief and as such receives only cursory mention in many of the books surveying this subject for Africa. Furthermore, the story is often assumed to have begun just over a century ago, with the advent of modem Western mission activity. However, evidence from three directions sheds light on the pre Islamic Judeao-Christian influence: written records, archaeological data and vestiges of Judeao-Christian symbolism still extant within both traditional 1 Somali culture and closely related ethnic groups • Together such data indicates that both Judaism and Christianity preceded Islam to the lowland Horn of Africa In the introduction to his article on Nubian Christianity, Bowers (1985:3-4) bemoans the frequently held misconception that Christianity only came recently to Africa, exported from the West. He notes that this mistake is even made by some Christian scholars. He concludes: "The subtle impact of such an assumption within African Christianity must not be underestimated. Indeed it is vital to African Christian self-understanding to recognize that the Christian presence in Africa is almost as old as Christianity itself, that Christianity has been an integral feature of the continent's life for nearly two thousand years." *Ben I. The author has been in ministry among Somalis since 1982, in somalia itself, and in Kenya and Ethiopia. 1 These are part of both the Lowland and Highland Eastern Cushitic language clusters such as Oromo, Afar, Hadiya, Sidamo, Kambata, Konso and Rendille. -

Codex Aubin: History in Reprint Arjun Sai Krishnan I. Introduction The Codex Aubin, a post-conquest Nahuatl-language pictorial codex, is a valuable record of indigenous perspectives on historiography in the period immediately succeeding the Spanish conquest of the Valley of Mexico. A fascinating handwritten account of Mexica (Aztec) history and legend, it begins with a departure from Áztlan, the mythical homeland of the Mexica, and ending in the early seventeenth century with a depiction of indigenous life in early colonial Mexico. Clearly drawing from the Aztec cartographic and pictorial tradition, the codex contains primarily Nahuatl text transcribed in Roman script and printed on colonial octavo paper (Paxton & Cicero, 2017). The text represents a complex intersection of cultures, languages, and representational systems: an indigenous annal swathed in European conventions, unravelling the many competing traditions encompassed in the codex grants a unique window into the status of language and history in the nascent mestizo society of Mexico. A number of scholars have commented on the codex’s historiography (Rajagopalan, 2019), (Navarrete, 2000), most focusing on a subset of the original text’s narratorial and pictorial choices. An exploration of the tlacuilo’s intentions and audience becomes key; we see the creative re-telling of an ancient myth, illustrated with traditional imagery but written in Roman script and glossed in Spanish. What emerges is a clear picture of a cultural encounter; the Aubin codex is a demonstrative example of the post-Conquest European reformulation of indigenous conventions. This work will attempt to review some of the scholarship surrounding the Aubin codex, but most interestingly, we will also focus on the Princeton University manuscript copy of the codex.
