<> Greetings from the Chair Sunday, November 11, 5:00 p.m. Daniel Janzen, The October 8 announcement that 2010 Kyoto Prize Laureate Shinya Yamanaka won the 2012 for or Medicine was exciting news for the San Diego community. The Kyoto Prizes 1997 Kyoto Laureate in continue to be a leading indicator of future Nobel Laureates. As the site of the annual Kyoto Prize Basic Sciences Symposium, San Diego is a “second home” to each year’s Kyoto Prize Laureates. This week, the Kyoto Symposium Organization sends its annual delegation of San Diego leaders <> to Kyoto for the formal presentation of the 2012 Kyoto Prizes on November 10. Doyle Kyoto Scholarship Applications Chair, Kyoto Symposium Organization Now Accepted San Diego Delegation Heads to Kyoto --- 2013 --- Nearly 25 San Diego community leaders will personally greet the new Kyoto Prize Laureates at the Thursday, January 3 November 9-12 Kyoto Prize Celebration in Kyoto, Japan. The San Diego delegation will include eminent UC San Diego oceanographer Walter Munk, who received the 1999 Kyoto Prize in Basic Kyoto Scholarship Application Science for his fundamental contributions to the development of earth science. Doyle, the group will include distinguished scholars from <> the Symposium’s four co-host universities – the University of San Diego, San Diego State University, UC San Diego, and Point Loma Nazarene University – as well as Sharon A. Weinberger, the recipient of the 2012 Kyoto Prize Journalism Fellowship. Tuesday, March 12, 5:30 p.m. Kyoto Symposium Gala The Kyoto Prize Celebration will begin with a Nov. 9 welcome reception. The Laureates will receive their medals at a November 10 prize presentation ceremony. They will deliver commemorative Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel lectures on November 11 and lead public workshops on November 12. These events will give the San Diego delegates opportunities to work directly with the Laureates on their presentations at the <> March 12-15 Kyoto Prize Symposium in San Diego.

Tuesday, March 12, 10:00 a.m. November 28 Kyoto Prize Symposium Kyoto Symposium Reception at Athenaeum Laureate Welcome Point Loma Nazarene University A preview of coming events at the 2013 Kyoto Prize Symposium will take place on Wednesday, November 28, at a 5:30 p.m. reception at the Athenaeum in La Jolla. The reception will feature presentations by leaders of the San Diego delegation to the November 9-12 Kyoto Prize Celebration. <> They will report on the Kyoto festivities and look ahead to the March 12-15 Symposium in San Diego.

Kyoto Prize Symposium Scholarship Application Period Opens December 5

Online applications for the 2012-2013 Kyoto Prize Symposium Scholarships, which will institute a more simplified application form this year, will be accepted beginning December 5, and the deadline for applications is January 3.

The Kyoto Prize Symposium Scholarships are administered through the San Diego Foundation. Applicants will use the common Foundation form for 2012-2013 (which includes two essay questions), and they also will be required to submit a personalized Kyoto Prize Scholarship essay. Online applications will be accepted beginning December 5. The deadline for applications is January 3, and finalists will be interviewed and winners selected February 4. (Click here for details.)

The Kyoto Prize Symposium Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school students in the San Diego-Tijuana region in conjunction with the annual Kyoto Prize Symposium. Scholarship applicants are young achievers who have been inspired to pursue a college education in one of the three annual Kyoto Prize categories: Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences, or Arts and Philosophy. Kyoto Prize Scholarship recipients have a unique opportunity to spend private time with the Kyoto Laureates in their respective fields during the annual Kyoto Prize Symposium Gala, this year to be held March 12 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel.
