Message from the Chair

The 2015/2016 year was an exciting one for GIS in Conservation (GiC). During that time, GiC:-

 Awarded our annual Scholarship to Hayley Hume-Merry who attended the 2016 NZ Esri User Conference;

 Added Martin Slimin to the GiC Committee;

 Engaging with Kelvin Hastie’s Predator Free initiative;

 Helped over 25 conservation groups by providing GIS software and spatially skilled volunteers; and

 Increased our volunteer pool to over 120.

The usage of the GIS technology and GiC volunteers in the 2015 and 2016 year among the conservation groups included hand held in field applications for planting and pest weed control, applying for Resource Management Consents, mapping of assets such as trap locations, identifying boundaries, identifying pest hotspots, identifying suitable locations for translocation of flora and fauna, etc. The usage among the First Nation New Zealand Maori included capturing their oral history in a confidential manner before it is lost, protecting the native flora used for weaving, medicine and food for future generations and protecting hapu sites, to name but a few.

I would like to thank the GiC committee members for their efforts over the last 12 months. Each has a portfolio of responsibility and they have all done a fantastic job. I would also like to thank our Sponsors who give GiC invaluable advice and direction, our Corporate Supporters and of course our GIS volunteers who use their own time to help with conservation efforts throughout New Zealand.

We now look forward to the next year to provide even more support to New Zealand’s conservation efforts.

Parker S Jones Chair GiC

Appended at the end of this document are the 2015 AGM Minutes and the 2015-2016 Financial Accounts Statement.

Sponsors

Nga Whenua Rahui

GiC has Esri and Eagle Technology as sponsors. They supply GiC with GIS software and support and Eagle sponsored our ArcGIS Online Amazon account. GiC also has the Department of Conservation, Wellington City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council as sponsors. These three provide GiC with personnel who can advise GiC on the spatial requirements of conservation volunteer groups working with these sponsors.

GiC stand at the Esri Conference Bonita Gestro at the 2016 NZ Esri User Conference

Eagle Technology generously sponsored a stand for GiC at the annual Esri Conference held in August 2014, August 2015 and again in August 2016. This helped GiC recruit new GIS specialist volunteers and keep our current volunteers informed on our progress.

GiC would also like to thank the New Zealand Esri User Group who has generously agreed to donate $1,500 per year towards the NZ SCGIS Scholarship. It will be used to help the NZ candidates attend the USA scholarship or the New Zealand Esri User Conferences.

ArcGIS Online GiC volunteer Sam Morrison administrates GiC’s ArcGIS Online account. This offers GiC volunteers a method to develop applications for Android and iOS devices, and serve data to them via the web. The following two examples allow offline in field work as the maps and data are cached to the handheld phones. Volunteers download the application with maps from the Google or Apple stores, and with no training, start to be productive in their volunteer work.

SCGIS

GiC became the New Zealand Chapter of the world wide Society for Conservation GIS in 2014. This gives GiC access to GIS specialists working on conservation solutions throughout the world. It also lets GiC participate in the SCGIS Scholarship Program which has a value of up to $10,000USD including attending the SCGIS and Esri USA conferences, attending Jupiter Networks for intensive training and paying some of the travel expenses. The Scholarship program is run worldwide and each SCGIS chapter nominates one worthy candidate.
