What Is a Boggart Hole?1 Simon Young ISI, Florence (Italy)
What is a Boggart Hole?1 Simon Young ISI, Florence (Italy) INTRODUCTION The boggart—a word of uncertain origins (OED, ‘Boggard, -art’; Nodal and Milner 1875, 126; Wright 1898–1905, I, 326)—was once a much feared bogey in the midlands and the north of England. By the nineteenth century it had come to be associated, above all, with what might be called a ‘greater Lancashire’: the County Palatine, the south Pennines and the northern fringes of Cheshire and Derbyshire. Relative to the amount of writing that survives, most of it from the 1800s and much in Lancashire dialect, the boggart is perhaps Britain’s most understudied supernatural creature. This is true of the nineteenth century (Thornber 1837, 38, 99–104 and 329–34; Harland and Wilkinson 1867, 49–62; 1873, 10–12 and 141– 42; Hardwick 1872, 124–42; Bowker 1883, 27–36, 52–58, 63–72, 77–82, 131–39, 152–58, 174–88, 212–20 and 238–42; McKay 1888), and of recent years (Billingsley 2007, 69–74; Turner-Bishop 2010; Roberts 2013, 95–105; Young 2014b). Boggart place-names have particularly been neglected. In fact, there is, to the best of the present writer’s knowledge, no study of boggart toponyms, despite the existence of tens of boggart place-names, many still in use today.2 1 I would like to thank John Billingsley, David Boardman, Ffion Dash, Anna Garrett, Richard Green, Denise Jagger, Stephen Lees, Wendy Lord, Eileen Ormand and the anonymous reviewer for help with the writing and with the improvement of this article. -

TRADUCIDO POR “Latin Gremlins” JAMES POTTER Y EL HILO CARMESÍ G. NORMAN LIPPERT CARIÑOSAMENTE BASADO EN LOS MUNDOS Y PERSONAJES DE J.K. -
Fiestas and Fervor: Religious Life and Catholic Enlightenment in the Diocese of Barcelona, 1766-1775
FIESTAS AND FERVOR: RELIGIOUS LIFE AND CATHOLIC ENLIGHTENMENT IN THE DIOCESE OF BARCELONA, 1766-1775 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Andrea J. Smidt, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Dale K. Van Kley, Adviser Professor N. Geoffrey Parker Professor Kenneth J. Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses. -

HARRY POTTER IN TURKEY THE SOCIOCULTURAL FRAMEWORK OF TRANSLATION IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT Thesis submitted to the Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Translation by Merlin Özkan Boğaziçi University 2009 Thesis Abstract Merlin Özkan, “Harry Potter in Turkey: The Sociocultural Framework of Translation in a Global Context” This study focuses on the sociocultural framework of translational phenomena which governs the selection, production and reception processes. In this light, the external forces effective in the creation of a translated text, how these forces influence the adoption of translation strategies and the impact of translation as a cultural product are analyzed. The implications of cultural exchange through translation in a globalized background are studied in line with the analysis of the interactional character between broader social structures with all its agencies and their effect on the functional mechanisms of translation markets, the publishing industry and the procedural stages of translation. Itamar Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory, Pierre Bourdieu’s relevant concepts of cultural production and circulation model, Gideon Toury’s concept of norms and Lawrence Venuti’s discourse on a cultural and political agenda are explored and questioned in terms of their sociological implications. The applicable aspects of these theoretical approaches are put into test to analyze the implications of the Harry Potter translations in the Turkish target culture and the intercultural relations of translations across various cultural settings. The analysis of the case study has shown that the translations are initially conditioned by the macro clusters of social structures, such as the workings of the publishing industry, the politics of media concerns and specific social, cultural and economic concerns of the decision- makers particular to the target culture. -

A Gallery of Archetypes
Meta Religion / Psychiatry / Analytical Psychology / (from http://www.meta-religion.com/Psychiatry/Analytical_psychology/a_gallery_of_archetypes.htm) A Gallery of Archetypes From: http://www.myss.com/ThreeArchs.asp The archetypes listed here in boldface type are just a few of the many ancient patterns that exist in human consciousness. Many additional archetypes that are closely related are mentioned in parentheses, such as Hermit (found under Mystic), Therapist (under Healer), or Pirate (under Rebel). Please read through the entire list, looking at all the archetypes in parentheses, before assuming that the one you're looking for isn't here. Naturally, it's impossible to list all the hundreds of archetypes that exist, but these are some of the most common, and include just about all that are mentioned in my book, CD, or tape of Sacred Contracts. If you feel that you have an archetype that isn't found here, please do not hesitate to give it careful consideration, and feel free to include it in your support team. Remember that all archetypes are essentially neutral and manifest in both light and shadow attributes. Accordingly, I have tried to include both sets of attributes for each listing, along with cues to help you determine whether a given archetype may be part of your lifelong support team of twelve. To help you further, I've listed some examples of each archetype as embodied in popular film, fiction, drama, and the world's religions and mythologies. In evaluating whether an archetype is part of your intimate group, pay special attention to whether you can perceive a pattern of influence throughout your history, rather than only isolated or recent incidents. -
Vilenica and Vilenjak: Bearers of an Extinct Fairy Cult1
Nar. umjet. 39/1, 2002, pp. 31-63, Z. Čiča, Vilenica and Vilenjak: Bearers of an Extinct... Original scientific paper Received: 17th Jan. 2002 Accepted: 29th March 2002 UDK 398.4(4)(091) ZORAN »I»A BartoliÊi 41, Zagreb VILENICA AND VILENJAK: BEARERS OF AN EXTINCT FAIRY CULT1 This article traces a popular pre-Christian fairy cult in Croatia and broader, with vilenica and vilenjak as its bearers and practitioners. The sources analyzed are historical records, sixteenth-century literary fragments, theological writings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and nineteenth- and twentieth-century ethnographic data. The author reconstructs and examines the morphology of the cult, its influence on the learned culture (Renaissance literary works), along with the theological endeavours to alter the social reception of an apparently widespread cult and to root it out. The Roman Catholic efforts to reform popular culture as well as the historical phenomenon of witch-hunting and its consequences contributed markedly to the disappearance of the contemporary awareness of vilenicas (f) and vilenjaks (vileniks, vilovnjaks) (m) as the central personages of a rich cosmological cult similar to those practised elsewhere in Europe. Key words: vilenica, vilenjak (vilenik, vilovnjak), fairy cult, witch- -hunting, popular culture 1. It was in early August of 1660 when captain Ivan Gučetić of Janjina captaincy, the Republic of Dubrovnik, was informed of the presence of vilenicas and streghe [witches] in his district. Intrigued by the report, he decided to have one of these vilenicas summoned. Soon before him stood a young woman, aged between 25 and 30, who was to satisfy the captain's curiosity and puzzlement. -
