HIJACK HEROINE RECEIVES MEDAL FOR ACT OF VALOR By Irvin Molotsky - Washington, Oct. 4 - , the purser of the plane that was hijacked to in June, today was given a medal reserved for the nation’s greatest heroes. Mrs. Derickson became the first woman ever to receive the Silver Cross, which is awarded by the Legion of Valor, one of the nation’s oldest veterans’ organizations. She was aboard T.W.A. Flight 847 when it was hijacked on June 14 by two Shiite terrorists shortly after takeoff from on a flight to . One of the passengers, Robert Dean Stethem, a Navy diver, was killed after the plane landed in Beirut. She was among the 53 passengers and crew members who were released in the next day, but 39 others were held hostage in Beirut for 17 days. Mrs. Derickson shielded another Navy diver, Clinton Suggs, when one of the hijackers went for him after killing Mr. Stethem. Another hostage, Thomas Cullins, said of Mrs. Derickson after they were released: "She saved lives, literally° She put her body in between blows and took blows herself. I frankly think there would have been more killings, and possibly a whole planeload, without her." The award was presented in the Capitol Hill office of Senator Bill Bradley, Democrat of New Jersey, who praised Mrs° Derickson for "her calm, confident, valorous work." Mrs. Derickson lives in Newton, N.J.. James D. Doughtie, national adjutant of the Legion of Valor, which was founded in 1890, said she was only the 19th person to have won the medal since it was established in 19S7. Three of those are the unknown soldiers of World War I, World War II and the Korean War who are buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The others are people who selflessly risked their lives to save others. Mrs. Derickson said at the ceremony that she held no ill will toward those who might have misunderstood her role in dealing with the hi- jackers. For a brief time in the confusion that surrounded the episode, there were erroneous reports that she had aided the hijackers in singling out passengers with Jewish-sounding names. "Of course I’m over that hurt," she said in response to a question. "I was raised a Christian, and I forgive." The award was presented by Morris G. Worley, national commander of the Legion of Valor, who said Mrs. Derickson "embodies everything 4O good that we can say about socfety." With her at the ceremony was her husband, Russell, a retired pilot~ their 7-year-old son Matthew, and her mother, ~arianne Patzelt, who lives in Germany and was flown here for the ceremony. Mrs. Derick- son was born in Prague and reared in Germany. - The New York Times, October 5, 1985 (contributed by Paul Kaparoff).
