Over time, mu- sical expression has accompanied the migration of humanity across the planet, being present in all societies. Resulting from -individual or collective- creative processes, music reveals elements that characterise speciic cultural identities of its creators, at the same time estab- lishing itself as a new identity element of the community that appropriates it. In this dynamic process of cultural enrichment, musical language is one of the most contagious ones and, therefore, constitutes a precious contribution to the consolida- tion of interculturality in contemporary societies. In this respect, the Gala «Together in Diversity», held by ACIDI in December 2008, was an example of participation of different musical expressions of various immigrant communities in Portugal in the construction of a new cultural reality that the country currently offers. The present issue of the Migrações Journal, dedicated to the topic of Music and Mi- gration, presents us with a set of articles that clarify the importance of music in the context of migratory communities, both as an identiier and as an element of com- munication and dialogue. We therefore express our gratitude to the authors that collaborated in it and espe- cially to Maria de São José Côrte-Real, that has ensured its scientiic coordination. nota de abertura 6 Music and Migration Migrações _ #7 _ October 2010 7 Roberto Carneiro Immigration Observatory Coordinator The Migrações Journal is proud to present a “succulent” number 7, dedicated to the topic of Music and Migration. This issue, wisely coordinated by Maria de São José Côrte-Real, displays an amazing musical rhapsody. In fact, there is no lack of pleasant surprises and stunning diversity in this edition of the Journal. Featuring a remarkable number of researchers from ethno-anthropo- -musicology, the volume irstly offers us a true mosaic of research articles: from the Indo-Pakistani diaspora to Luso-identities in the USA, from colonial and postcolonial identities in Goan diaspora to Cape Verdean batuque, from Afghan music in Australia and Kurdish music in Berlin to music scenes in Vienna, Barcelona and Lisbon, from music as an indicator of social integration in Melbourne to Afro-American music in neighborhoods of the Bronx to music of political intervention in the American presi- dential elections of 2008. Secondly, respecting the common guideline of the Journal, the present thematic is- sue offers nine articles regarding good practices in which valuable associative, foun- dational and communal initiatives stand out. Finally, again following the Journal’s normal and established structure, the coordina- tor presents us with a set of nine opinion articles with a strong lusophone accent and celebrating its multiple expressivities in Portugal and in the African Continent. Music is undoubtedly a remarkable language of universal communication. In other words, it is an aesthetic communicator of particular cultures emphasizing genuinely universal elements. Without musical expressiveness, population movements and identity encounters would ind themselves impoverished in revealing their authenticities and in the crea- tion of musical “hybrids” that constitute one of the most portentous emergences in the meeting of peoples and cultures. Should there be any doubt, there is fado, tango, samba or jazz to fully prove it. The issue Music and Migration thus is a remarkable tribute to the creative human genius that, tireless and irrepressible, fulills the mandate of co-creator that it has been carrying since the extraordinary rise of the Homo Sapiens Sapiens in the up- ward chain of the mysterious work of creation. Randy Weston was not the first musician to do so, however he was chosen for this thesis because his experiences, influences, and music clearly demonstrate the importance traditional African culture has played in his life. Randy Weston was born during the Harlem Renaissance. His parents, who lived in Brooklyn at that time, were influenced by the political views that predominated African American culture. Weston’s father, in particular, felt a strong connection to his African heritage and instilled the concept of pan-Africanism and the writings of Marcus Garvey firmly into Randy Weston’s consciousness.

    BO DIDDLEY’S UNCONVENTIONAL 1950’s SOUND AND ITS ANTICIPATION OF HIP HOP OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How were Bo Diddley’s recordings an anomaly in relation to 1950s Pop music, and how is his rhythm-driven sound and self-presentation a precursor to Hip Hop style? OVERVIEW From his first appearance on the Billboard R&B chart in 1955 and continuing over his five- decade career, Bo Diddley has been celebrated for the rhythm-driven, percussive sound of his ensemble, at the center of which was Diddley’s guitar playing. If by the Rock era the guitar solo became a symbolic centerpiece in recordings and performances, Diddley’s emphasis was always on the rhythm guitar. His approach didn’t revolve around the single- and double-note leads that came to dominate the music. Instead, Bo Diddley pioneered a sound that involved every member of his combo playing with a percussive sensibility. Rhythm was emphasized over melody, with a vocal style that often approximated Rap set against that rhythmic backdrop. Earlier even than James Brown, Diddley inadvertently pointed to a Hip Hop future. His best-known rhythm guitar pattern (three strokes/rest/two strokes, or “shave and a haircut, two bits”) influenced many. The “Bo Diddley beat,” as it came to be known, appeared on records by Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, U2, rapper B.o.B., and many others. Recentemente, passou também a ser produzido entre jovens imigrantes ou descendentes na região metropolitana de Lisboa. Em tal contexto, formaram-se redes de produtores e consumidores de kuduro e se estabeleceram formas de sociabilidade nos bair- ros de Lisboa e dos municípios em seu entorno onde vivem as populações de imigrantes e seus descendentes oriundos de Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau e São Tomé e Príncipe.

Os anos entre o fechamento e a reabertura Agência O Globo foram de muita militância cultural, política e judicial, num movimento que reuniu pessoas da classe artística e políticos comprometidos com as causas culturais. Vencedor de uma ação popular, o Circo Voador ganhou o direito de voltar ao funcionamento, e a prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro ‒ que havia demolido o arcabouço anterior ‒ foi obrigada a construir uma nova estrutura para a casa. Com uma nova arquitetura, futurista e mais atenta às questões acústicas inerentes a uma casa de shows, o Circo retomou as atividades no segundo semestre de 2004 e segue ininterruptamente oferecendo opções de diversão, alegria e formação artística ao público do Rio e a todos os amantes de música e arte em geral. 8 Circo Voador Apresentação Uma característica do Acervo Circo Voador pós-reabertura é que a grande maioria dos eventos tem registro filmado. Ao contrário do período 1982-1996, que conta com uma cobertura significativa mas relativamente pequena (menos de 15% dos shows filmados), após 2004 temos mais de 95% dos eventos registrados em vídeo. O formato do período que este catálogo abrange, que vai de 2004 a 2009, é a fita MiniDV, extremamente popular à época por sua relação custo-benefício e pela resolução de imagem sensivelmente melhor do que outros formatos profissionais e semiprofissionais.
