Biodiversity in the Falkirk area includes familiar landscapes such as farmland, woodland, heath, rivers, and estuary, as well as being found in more obscure places such as the bark of a tree, the roof of a house and the land beneath our feet. Biodiversity plays a crucial role in our lives. A healthy and diverse natural environment is vital to our economic, social and spiritual well being, both now and in the future. The last 100 years have seen considerable declines in the numbers and health of many of our wild plants, animals and habitats as human activities place ever-increasing demands on our natural resources. Balkan’s Dinaric karst is a continuous source of specialized, cave adapted fauna - so called troglobionts. Much of this exceptionally rich biodiversity is attributed to beetles (Coleoptera) from the ground beetle tribe Trechi- ni (family Carabidae), with hundreds of species with different degrees of morphological modifications for life in subterranean habitats - so called troglomorphism. In this contribution, we present a discovery of one new genus and species of subterranean Trechine beetle, Orcusiella prokletijensis gen. et sp. nov. from a high-altitude pit situated on Prokletije Mountains, Montenegro. This new taxon is described, illustrated and compared with closely related taxa. An identification key for all so far known genera of Dinaric subterranean Trechini, as well as data on the distribution and ecology of these remarkable species are provided and discussed. Bininda-Emondsa aInstitut fu¨r Spezielle Zoologie und Evolutionsbiologie, FSU Jena, Germany bMuseo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid, Spain Received 14 October 2005; accepted 17 May 2006 Abstract A supertree for Adephaga was reconstructed based on 43 independent source trees – including cladograms based on Hennigian and numerical cladistic analyses of morphological and molecular data – and on a backbone taxonomy. To overcome problems associated with both the size of the group and the comparative paucity of available information, our analysis was made at the genus level (requiring synonymizing taxa at different levels across the trees) and used Safe Taxonomic Reduction to remove especially poorly known species. The final supertree contained 401 genera, making it the most comprehensive phylogenetic estimate yet published for the group. Interrelationships among the families are well resolved. Gyrinidae constitute the basal sister group, Haliplidae appear as the sister taxon of Geadephaga+ Dytiscoidea, Noteridae are the sister group of the remaining Dytiscoidea, Amphizoidae and Aspidytidae are sister groups, and Hygrobiidae forms a clade with Dytiscidae. Resolution within the species-rich Dytiscidae is generally high, but some relations remain unclear. Trachypachidae are the sister group of Carabidae (including Rhysodidae), in contrast to a proposed sister-group relationship between Trachypachidae and Dytiscoidea. Carabidae are only monophyletic with the inclusion of a non-monophyletic Rhysodidae, but resolution within this megadiverse group is generally low. Non-monophyly of Rhysodidae is extremely unlikely from a morphological point of view, and this group remains the greatest enigma in adephagan systematics. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The first eyeless beetle known from Baltic amber, Trechus eoanophthalmus sp. n., is described and imaged using light microscopy and X-ray micro-computed tomography. Based on external characters, the new species is most similar to spe- cies of the Palaearctic Trechus sensu stricto clade and seems to be closely related to the Baltic amber fossil T. balticus Schmidt & Faille, 2015. Due to the poor conservation of the internal parts of the body, no information on the genital char- acters can be provided. Therefore, the systematic position of this fossil within the megadiverse genus Trechus remains dubious. The occurrence of the blind and flightless T. eoanophthalmus sp. n. in the Baltic amber forests supports a previ- ous hypothesis that these forests were located in an area partly characterised by mountainous habitats with temperate cli- matic conditions. -

DOI: 10.5038/1827-806X.40.1.4 An overview of the obligate hypogean fauna in Portugal (including Azores and Madeira archipelagos) is provided, with a list of obligated cave-dwelling species and subspecies, and a general perspective about its conservation. All the available literature on subterranean Biology of Portugal since the first written record in 1870 until today has been revised. A total of 43 troglobiont and 67 stygobiont species and subspecies from 12 orders have been described so far in these areas, included in the so-called Mediterranean hotspot of biodiversity. The subterranean fauna in Portugal has been considered moderately poor with some endemic relicts and it remains to be demonstrated if this fact is still true after investing in standard surveys in cave environments. The major problems related to the conservation of cave fauna are discussed, but it is clear that the protection of this specialized fauna implies an adequate management of surface habitats. -
