MAKAR.ow* A key to the genera of the Ground-beetle larvae (Coleoptera, Carabidae) of the Palearctic region INTRODUCTION It is necessary to use the data about the preimaginal stages, especially lar vae, forthe successful decision of many taxonomic and ecological questions, but it's rather difficult, because of the little knowledge on the larvae biology and morphology as well as the absence of modern identification keys. So, van Emden's monograph (1942) appears hitherto the most complete generalizing work. The available keys for the USSR (Sharova, 1958, 1964) and Middle Europe carabid larvae (Hurka, 1978; Arndt, 1991) do not contain a number of larval descriptions, published from 1942-1991. Besides, the finemorphologi cal investigations ofY. Bousquet and H. Goulet (Goulet, 1979; Bousquet and Goulet, 1984) produced on new opportunities forlarval descriptions. Unfor tunately, this method is currently poorly used (Arndt, 1989a, b; Arndt and Hurka, 1990; Bousquet, 1985a, b; 1986; Hurka, 1986; Makarow and Shilenkov, 1991 etc.) and can not be considered as a basis of the practical keys. The present work contains a key for determination of the main Palearctic carabid groups and takes into account most of the works that followed van Emden's monograph. -

Balkan’s Dinaric karst is a continuous source of specialized, cave adapted fauna - so called troglobionts. Much of this exceptionally rich biodiversity is attributed to beetles (Coleoptera) from the ground beetle tribe Trechi- ni (family Carabidae), with hundreds of species with different degrees of morphological modifications for life in subterranean habitats - so called troglomorphism. In this contribution, we present a discovery of one new genus and species of subterranean Trechine beetle, Orcusiella prokletijensis gen. et sp. nov. from a high-altitude pit situated on Prokletije Mountains, Montenegro. This new taxon is described, illustrated and compared with closely related taxa. An identification key for all so far known genera of Dinaric subterranean Trechini, as well as data on the distribution and ecology of these remarkable species are provided and discussed. Fennica 21: 33–42. Description and illustrations are provided for the third instar larva of Trechus alicantinus Español, 1971 obtained from a laboratory breeding. This paper aims to contribute to increase the general knowledge about microendemic hypogean species of the east of the Iberian Peninsula. Besides, it expands the existing knowledge about the preimaginal stages of the genus Trechus and the whole tribe Trechini (Coleoptera, Carabidae). Larvae can give additional information about the life style of the species. Larvae can also express, even more than the imagos, some apomorphic characters, traditionally considered a result of adaptation to the hypogean habitat, such as the regression of ocular structures. The characteristic lack of stemmata is discussed. This type of event, which also appears in other Trechini larvae, is probably more related to phylogenetic lineages than with an adaptive response to hypogean environment. V.M. The ground beetles of tribe Trechini (Coleoptera, Carabidae) are among the best studied and widespread groups with abundance of troglobionts, but their origin and evolution is largely unknown. Results: We sequenced 3.4 Kb of mitochondrial (cox1, rrnL, trnL, nad1) and nuclear (SSU, LSU) genes of 207 specimens of 173 mostly Alpine species, including examples of all subterranean genera but two plus a representation of epigean taxa. We applied Bayesian methods and maximum likelihood to reconstruct the topology and to estimate divergence times using a priori rates obtained for a related ground beetle genus. We found three main clades of late Eocene-early Oligocene origin: (1) the genus Doderotrechus and relatives; (2) the genus Trechus sensu lato, with most anisotopic subterranean genera, including the Pyrenean lineage and taxa from the Dinaric Alps; and (3) the genus Duvalius sensu lato, diversifying during the late Miocene and including all subterranean isotopic taxa. Most of the subterranean genera had an independent origin and were related to epigean taxa of the same geographical area, but there were three large monophyletic clades of exclusively subterranean species: the Pyrenean lineage, a lineage including subterranean taxa from the eastern Alps and the Dinarides, and the genus Anophthalmus from the northeastern Alps. -
