Accepted on November 21, 2011 Summary Krubera-Voronya cave and other deep systems in Arabika Massif are being explored during many speleological expeditions. A recent Ibero-Russian exploration expedition (summer of 2010) took place in this cave with the aim of providing a study of the biocenosis of the deepest known cave in the world. Four new species of Collembola were found at different depths: Schaefferia profundissima n. sp., Anurida stereoodorata n. sp., Deuteraphorura kruberaensis n. sp., and Plutomurus ortobalaganensis n. sp., the last one at -1980 m deep. The identification and description of the new species have required the careful study of all congeneric species, implying a revision of each genus. As a result of this work tables and keys to all significant characters for each species are presented. -

Introduction: Castles
Introduction: Castles Between the 9th and 10th centuries, the new invasions that were threatening Europe, led the powerful feudal lords to build castles and fortresses on inaccessible heights, at the borders of their territories, along the main roads and ri- vers’ fords, or above narrow valleys or near bridges. The defense of property and of the rural populations from ma- rauding invaders, however, was not the only need during those times: the widespread banditry, the local guerrillas between towns and villages that were disputing territori- es and powers, and the general political crisis, that inve- sted the unguided Italian kingdom, have forced people to seek safety and security near the forts. Fortified villages, that could accommodate many families, were therefore built around castles. Those people were offered shelter in exchange of labor in the owner’s lands. Castles eventually were turned into fortified villages, with the lord’s residen- ce, the peasants homes and all the necessary to the community life. When the many threats gradually ceased, castles were built in less endangered places to bear witness to the authority of the local lords who wanted to brand the territory with their power, which was represented by the security offered by the fortress and garrisons. Over the centuries, the castles have combined several functions: territory’s fortress and garrison against invaders and internal uprisings ; warehouse to gather and protect the crops; the place where the feudal lord administered justice and where horsemen and troops lived. They were utilised, finally, as the lord’s and his family residence, apartments, which were gradually enriched, both to live with more ease, and to make a good impression with friends and distinguished guests who often stayed there. -

Se describen los caracteres morfológicos más distintivos, así como los biotopos donde se encuentran y su tipo de alimentación. Se hace una evaluación de la biodiversidad, encontrando que existen citados más de 700 taxa, muchos de ellos a nivel genérico, de 24 familias. Se discute su distribución geográfica por provincias biogeográficas, así como la diversidad de cada estado. Se presentan cuadros con la clasificación ecológica con ejemplos mexicanos; se indican las familias y su riqueza a nivel mundial y nacional, así como la curva acumulativa de especies mexicanas por quinquenio. Palabras clave: Collembola, biodiversidad, distribución, ecología, acumulación de especies. Abstract. A brief assessment of the importance of the group in different ecosystems is done. A description of the most distinctive morphological characters, as well as biotopes where they live is included. An evaluation of their biodiversity is presented; finding that more than 700 taxa have been cited, many of them at the generic level, in 24 families. Their geographical distribution is discussed and the state richness is pointed out. Tables of ecological classification applied to Mexican species are given. -

Particularly intriguing are some 27 subterranean species in islands, which origin is usually difficult to interpret as their strongly 28 modified morphologies obscure their relationships. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The first eyeless beetle known from Baltic amber, Trechus eoanophthalmus sp. n., is described and imaged using light microscopy and X-ray micro-computed tomography. Based on external characters, the new species is most similar to spe- cies of the Palaearctic Trechus sensu stricto clade and seems to be closely related to the Baltic amber fossil T. balticus Schmidt & Faille, 2015. Due to the poor conservation of the internal parts of the body, no information on the genital char- acters can be provided. Therefore, the systematic position of this fossil within the megadiverse genus Trechus remains dubious. The occurrence of the blind and flightless T. eoanophthalmus sp. n. in the Baltic amber forests supports a previ- ous hypothesis that these forests were located in an area partly characterised by mountainous habitats with temperate cli- matic conditions.
