There’s Something Here for Everyone

2017-2018 Annual Report Dear Center Friends and Supporters,

What a busy year! As the Center became accustomed to the renovated and expanded spaces opened in November 2015, we devoted our 17-18 season to looking for ways to enhance our programming and grow to meet the needs of each of the 173,168 visitors who came through our doors.

We dreamed, we collaborated, and we experimented, and as a result, the Center’s 39th season was jam-packed with enlightening, enchanting, and enthralling programming proving that there truly is something here for everyone.

Every culture throughout history has used puppetry to convey information, lessons, and morals to the youngest in the community, and the Center is proud to carry on that tradition, making it one of Atlanta’s most accessible arts institutions. Through age-appropriate, arts- infused activities like Toddler Tuesdays and Preschool Puppetry Playshops, the Center engaged, entertained, and educated its youngest visitors. The Center was also proud to present Mother Goose as one of 17-18 Family Series’ ten fully-staged puppetry productions. Adapted and directed by Amy Sweeny for children Ages 2+, Mother Goose won the 2018 Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Direction for a Theatre for Young Audiences.

For older children and family audiences, the Center offered even more opportunities to experience the wonder of puppetry. As the Family Series supported curriculum standards by incorporating themes like cooperation, tolerance, perseverance, and responsibility, staff offered programs like Discovery Days and Tale Time to teach children through engaging Museum experiences, hosted Girl Scout STEM Days to help spark an interest in STEM, and offered Puppet Camp and Junior Explorers workshops for children wanting more hands-on experience with puppetry.

1 For many visitors—both young and old alike—the Center’s Create-A-Puppet WorkshopsTM became the highlight of their visits, and audiences of all ages continued to flock to the Center to visit the Worlds of Puppetry Museum, attend one of our film screenings, and celebrate special occasions like World Puppetry Day. We added an extra month to our Labyrinth exhibition, which brought over 100,000 fans of all ages to the Center from as far away as Germany and Australia, and our exhibition on Indian puppets opened November 2017 with the assistance of Atlanta’s Consul General of India.

While children are about 70% of our audience, we offered plenty of opportunities for adults to engage with the Center as well. The Center’s New Directions Series offered three productions, including Xperimental Puppetry Theater, which enabled novice and professional puppeteers to explore the art form in new, interesting ways with audiences. Adults who wanted to delve deeper into their love of puppetry participated in workshops through the Explore Puppetry Series, attended the special Women of the Muppets panel discussion, came to documentary screenings, or made use of the Nancy Staub Puppetry Research Library. Other events, such as the Center’s second Labyrinth Masquerade Ball, allowed adults to engage with us in a more relaxed, child-free atmosphere. Finally, nearly 200 adults volunteered over 5,000 hours of their time in our 17-18 season in support of the Center.

We believe puppetry is for everyone, so in our 39th year, we continued to strengthen our efforts to welcome undeserved audiences to the Center and share the art form with people beyond its walls. Our Field Trip Fund removed access barriers by underwriting over 80,000 discounted and free tickets to the Center, and we expanded our Sensory Friendly program offerings welcoming people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to experience the Center in a judgement-free environment.

The Center’s Education program traveled across the country to offer nearly 250 customized workshops, classes, puppet playshops, and presentations to over 10,000 people while Distance Learning used teleconferencing technology to reach over 8,000 people ranging in age from toddlers to senior adults.

Please read on to see how the Center’s three key programming areas—Performance, Museum, and Education—worked in tandem to showcase puppetry in action, as a fine art, and as a gateway to imagination.
