Are You What You Watch?
Are You What You Watch? Tracking the Political Divide Through TV Preferences By Johanna Blakley, PhD; Erica Watson-Currie, PhD; Hee-Sung Shin, PhD; Laurie Trotta Valenti, PhD; Camille Saucier, MA; and Heidi Boisvert, PhD About The Norman Lear Center is a nonpartisan research and public policy center that studies the social, political, economic and cultural impact of entertainment on the world. The Lear Center translates its findings into action through testimony, journalism, strategic research and innovative public outreach campaigns. Through scholarship and research; through its conferences, public events and publications; and in its attempts to illuminate and repair the world, the Lear Center works to be at the forefront of discussion and practice in the field. futurePerfect Lab is a creative services agency and think tank exclusively for non-profits, cultural and educational institutions. We harness the power of pop culture for social good. We work in creative partnership with non-profits to engineer their social messages for mass appeal. Using integrated media strategies informed by neuroscience, we design playful experiences and participatory tools that provoke audiences and amplify our clients’ vision for a better future. At the Lear Center’s Media Impact Project, we study the impact of news and entertainment on viewers. Our goal is to prove that media matters, and to improve the quality of media to serve the public good. We partner with media makers and funders to create and conduct program evaluation, develop and test research hypotheses, and publish and promote thought leadership on the role of media in social change. Are You What You Watch? is made possible in part by support from the Pop Culture Collaborative, a philanthropic resource that uses grantmaking, convening, narrative strategy, and research to transform the narrative landscape around people of color, immigrants, refugees, Muslims and Native people – especially those who are women, queer, transgender and/or disabled. -
Video Streaming Best Practices for Pr
VIDEO STREAMING BEST PRACTICES FOR PR Meerkat and Periscope Meerkat and Periscope are experiencing exponential growth. Since their launch in March, the two apps have seen more than 1.5 million live streams. In addition, video consumption is generally on the rise. Cisco predicts that video will account for 80 per cent of all Internet traffic in 2019, up from 64 per cent in 2014. People want to share their worlds. More importantly, they want to be invited into yours. General Electric (GE), pictured below, is taking its audience on an entirely new, experiential journey with Periscope. Meerkat and Periscope have put the spotlight on streaming video and video podcasts. Are they the latest shiny tools of the Internet or something more? We say more. With live streaming, you can engage your audience directly, in real time; boost existing PR content initiatives; and grow awareness and audience engagement. All types of brands are taking advantage of the medium, from musicians to chefs and from real estate professionals to business consultants. Twitter, Myspace and Facebook Demystified - by Ted Janusz
Twitter, MySpace and Facebook Demystified - by Ted Janusz Q: I hear people talking about Web sites like Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. What are they? And, even more importantly, should I be using them to promote oral implantology? First, you are not alone. A recent survey showed that 70 percent of American adults did not know enough about Twitter to even have an opinion. Tools like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace are components of something else you may have heard people talking about: Web 2.0 , a popular term for Internet applications in which the users are actively engaged in creating and distributing Web content. Web 1.0 probably consisted of the Web sites you saw back in the late 90s, which were nothing more than fancy electronic brochures. Web 1.5 would have been something like Amazon or eBay, sites on which one could buy, sell and leave reviews. What Web 3.0 will look like is anybody's guess! Let's look specifically at the three applications that you mentioned. Tweet, Tweet Twitter - "Twitter is like text messaging, only you can also do it from the Web," says Dan Tynan, the author of the Tynan on Technology blog. "Instead of sending a message to just one person, you can send it to thousands of people at once. You can choose to follow anyone's update (called "tweets") simply by clicking the Follow button on their profile, or vice-versa. The only rule is that each tweet can be no longer than 140 characters." Former CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey once accepted an award for Twitter by saying, "We'd like to thank you in 140 characters or less. -
GOOGLE+ PRO TIPS Google+ Allows You to Connect with Your Audience in a Plethora of New Ways
GOOGLE+ PRO TIPS Google+ allows you to connect with your audience in a plethora of new ways. It combines features from some of the more popular platforms into one — supporting GIFs like Tumblr and, before Facebook jumped on board, supporting hashtags like Twitter — but Google+ truly shines with Hangouts and Events. As part of our Google Apps for Education agreement, NYU students can easily opt-in to Google+ using their NYU emails, creating a huge potential audience. KEEP YOUR POSTS TIDY While there isn’t a 140-character limit, keep posts brief, sharp, and to the point. Having more space than Twitter doesn’t mean you should post multiple paragraphs; use Twitter’s character limit as a good rule of thumb for how much your followers are used to consuming at a glance. When we have a lot to say, we create a Tumblr post, then share a link to it on Google+. REMOVE LINKS AFTER LINK PREVIEW Sharing a link on Google+ automatically creates a visually appealing link preview, which means you don’t need to keep the link in your text. There may be times when you don’t want a link preview, in which case you can remove the preview but keep the link. Whichever you prefer, don’t keep both. We keep link previews because they are more interactive than a simple text link. OTHER RESOURCES Google+ Training Video USE HASHTAgs — but be sTRATEGIC BY GROVO Hashtags can put you into already-existing conversations and make your Learn More BY GOOGLE posts easier to find by people following specific tags, such as incoming How Google+ Works freshmen following — or constantly searching — the #NYU tag. -

Lady Gaga Fails to Obtain Transfer of 'Fan Site' Domain Name International
Lady Gaga fails to obtain transfer of ‘fan site’ domain name Cybersquatting International - Hogan Lovells November 09 2011 In Germanotta v oranges arecool XD (Claim No FA1108001403808), singer Stefani Germanotta, known as Lady Gaga, has lost her bid to gain control of the domain name ‘ladygaga.org’ on the basis that it was pointing towards a non-commercial fan website. The case was brought under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and filed with the National Arbitration Forum (NAF), based in Minneapolis, United States. The respondent was listed as oranges arecool XD. To be successful in a UDRP procedure, a complainant must evidence that: l the domain name is identical, or confusingly similar, to a trademark or service mark in which it has rights; l the respondent has no rights or legitimate interests in respect of the domain name; and l the domain name has been registered and is being used in bad faith. Gaga had no problem in proving the first requirement, as she had registered three federal LADY GAGA trademarks with the US Patent and Trademark Office in various classes. However, the three-member panel found that Gaga had not established that the respondent had no rights or legitimate interests under the second requirement. Given that the three requirements are cumulative, the complaint failed, and it was not necessary for the panel to consider the last requirement in relation to bad faith. The respondent asserted that she was operating a genuine non-commercial fan website at the domain name ‘ladygaga.org’, which contained no commercial links and included a prominent disclaimer, as follows: "Ladygaga.Org is just a unprofitable unofficial fansite, we do not get money from it. -
