  • The Patron Saints and Devotions of the Benedictine Military Orders (Portugal and Castile, 15-16Th Centuries)
The Patron Saints and Devotions of the Benedictine Military Orders (Portugal and Castile, 15-16th Centuries) Paula Pinto Costa1 Raquel Torres Jiménez2 Joana Lencart3 Abstract This paper studies hagiographic devotion in the seigniories of the military orders: the Orders of Avis and Christ in Portugal and of Calatrava in Castile. Applying a common methodology and using similar sources for all three cases, this paper analyzes the written testimonies of the orders’ devotion to Christ and the Virgin Mary, as well as their veneration of the saints. These records were compiled from the visitations made to churches, hermitages, and confraternities between 1462 and 1539. The research was governed by two objectives: firstly, to construct a hagiographic overview of the selected territories by systematizing the data collected; and, secondly, to reflect on the typical devotional profile of the territories of the military orders as portrayed by the documentary evidence. Policy Manual Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan Policies and Procedures Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan Preamble What you are holding is the Policies and Procedures Manual of the Archdiocese of Grouard- McLennan. This manual has been put together with a couple of goals in mind: 1. To provide information on the history and development of the Archdiocese, that is not easily found elsewhere; 2. To provide the policies and procedures that pastors, lay pastoral animators, councils and committees may need to follow in their administration and ministry in the Archdiocese. As much as possible, this same information will be available on the Archdiocesan web-site (http://archgm.ca), but it is found here in a printed format for the benefit of those who do not easily use a computer or have access to one. In selecting policies and procedures, the College of Consultors / Council of Priests has made every effort to include here only those matters which are not adequately found elsewhere in the Code of Canon Law (CGC), or the Canonical and Pastoral Guide for Parishes (CPGP) Canadian Edition 2006, published by Wilson & Lafleur (Montreal). Every parish must have a copy of these two works as well. As further policies and procedures are enacted, or as those found in this manual are amended, the current policies and procedures will be sent to every parish, as well as posted on the Archdiocesan website. UMBRIA Is a region of central Italy. It includes lake Trasimeno and Marmore Falls, and is crossed by the River Tiber. The regional capital is Perugia. Umbria is known for its landscapes, traditions, history, culinary de- lights, artistic legacy, and influence on culture. The region is characterized by hills, mountains, valleys and historical towns such as the university centre of Perugia, Assisi, a World Heritage Site associated with St. Francis of Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco and other Franciscan sites, works by Giotto and Cimabue, Terni, the hometown of St. Valentine, Norcia, the hometown of St. Benedict, Città di Castello, main center of the early Renaissance situated in the Tiber High Valley, Gubbio, the hometown of t. Umbria is bordered by Tuscany to the west and the north, Marche to the east and Lazio to the south. Partly hilly and mountainous, and partly flat and fer- tile owing to the valley of the Tiber, its topography includes part of the central Apennines In antiquity, the plain was covered by a pair of shallow, interlock- ing lakes, the Lacus Clitorius and the Lacus Umber. They were drained by the Romans over several hun- dred years. The eastern part of the region, being crossed by many faults, has been often hit by earth- quakes: the last ones have been that of 1997 (which hit Foligno, Assisi and Nocera Umbra) and those of 2016 (which struck Norcia and the Valnerina).

  • The Names of Municipalities Toponímia Religiosa Em Minas Gerais

The sun suddenly tumed palé, emitted brilliant rays of multi- colored light, spun three times on its axis and then, to the horror of the assembled multitude, “power-dived” dizzily to- wards earth. A terrified cry rose from the crowd as thousands fell to their knees thinking the end of the world was at hand. Among those present was a correspondent for one of the major News Services in this country. Next day, from Lisbon, he cabled a long and impressive story about the Miracle of the Sun. But it was never published.

  • The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension
The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest.

  • The Judiciary of Diocesan Vicars in the Later Roman Empire
The Judiciary of Diocesan Vicars in the Later Roman Empire by Jacek Wiewiorowski is the inaugurating volume of a new publishing series of the Faculty of Law and Administration, Adam Mickiewicz Univer- sity in Poznań. This project draws upon the series of works written by the faculty members whose selection appeared in print in the 1950s. At the same time, by being published in English, the series responds to the challenges of contemporary science, in which widespread dis- semination of research is of paramount importance. Thus the series will foster internationalization of the research process and introduce the achievements of Poznań scholars into the international discourse of contemporary jurisprudence. ISBN 978-83-232-2925-4. Text in English. The study focuses on vicars of dioceses (vicarius dioeceseos) of the Later Roman Empire and their judiciary capacity, which occupied one of the principal places in their duties. It is the first attempt to present the issue in scholarly research. The book covers the period from the establishment of dioceses under Diocletian (reigning 284–305) until the final abolishment of vicariates by Justinian I (reigning 527–565) and his further modifications of imperial admin- istration introduced at a supra-provincial level.
