ADULT FAITH FORMATION Continuing religious education for adults striving to grow in their faith Davidic Covenant

After Moses’ successor Joshua took the Israelites into the Promised Land, a cyclical pattern developed that would last for centuries. After a genera- tion (40 years) of peace and right worship of God, the Israelites would fall away and fall prey to neighboring nations, then a leader would rise up, defeat their enemies, and lead Israel to repent and return to God. This is the book of Judges, and it can be summed up in its final verse, “In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 21:25). There was chaos amongst the Israelites; they were not putting God first and things needed to change.

The final judge, Samuel, a great priest, received a demand from the people of Israel to have a king. They looked around them at other nations and their kings, and wanted to be just like everyone else (we make this same mistake today, looking at the secular world and all its trappings, and want- ing to be just like everyone else). Samuel was infuriated, but the Lord told him to give them what they wanted; that it was not a rejection of Samuel, but a rejection of the Lord as their rightful king. Saul was chosen as king, a man who looked like a king, but at heart was weak and too concerned with the opinion of others.

Saul made many mistakes during his rule, because of his lack of faith in God. He was not concerned with what the Lord wanted, but with using His name to win people for himself. After a while of this, the Lord demanded Samuel go to a man named Jesse, where he would find a boy, one of Jesse’s sons, to anoint as a new king. This was David. Described as “a man after God’s own heart,” David was a mighty warrior, a great poet (he wrote nearly half of the Psalms), and the prototypical leader of Israel by which all others were judged.

David was not without his faults, but through his repentance and love, he ultimately stays true to the Lord, and the Lord makes a covenant with him, “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son… I will not take my steadfast love from him… And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before me; your throne shall be established for ever” (2 Samuel 7:12-16). The Lord promised a throne for one of his successors that would last forever, and God Himself would be this successor’s father. David’s direct successor, Solomon, would build a house for God, the first Temple, but would stumble and fall near the end of his reign and quickly Israel again descended into chaos. Eventually, the monarchy itself would end, as Israel was subjugated by the Assyrian and Babylonian Empires. For hundreds of years, it would seem as if the covenant had been broken, and for those without faith, it would seem today that David’s dynasty is dead and unrecoverable. But God does not make promises He can’t keep, and as we’ll see next week, Jesus Christ, Son of David, is the fulfillment of this and all other covenants we have written about these past couple months.

SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become

God's Beloved People—DAVID Fill in the blanks!

King Saul was the first Hebrew king, but did not always follow God’s laws. So God decided to find a new young man to prepare to be the king, rather than give the kingship to one of Saul’s sons. God sent his prophet, Samuel, to Jesse. Jesse had seven sons, and God said one of those sons would be the next king. God said no to all of the oldest six sons—he didn’t see the littlest son’s size or strength, but saw the goodness of his heart. Even though David was small and only a shepherd, God knew he would be a faithful leader to the Hebrew people!

David proved his reliance on God when he slew Goliath! And he was wise to hide from the jealous King Saul. When it was his turn to be anointed the king, David reigned for 40 years. He united the kingdom and always praised and trusted in God. And when he made mistakes, he was humble and repented. David wrote many of the Psalms. And he taught his son, Solomon, to love the Lord. God promised David that all future kings would come from his family line—leading up to Jesus!

“The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need. He lets me rest in green pastures. He leads me to calm water. He gives me new strength. He leads me on paths that are right for the good of his name. Even though I walk through a very dark valley, I will not be afraid, because you are with me. Your rod and your staff comfort me.” Psalm 23. SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, May 16: St. Ubald Baldassini—Bishop St. Ubald Baldassini was born to a noble family in , Italy in 1084. His father passed away at a young age and his mother suffered from a neurological ailment which left him an orphan. He was raised and educated by his uncle, the Bishop of Gubbio. Ubald was ordained a deacon and served in the Cathe- dral where he helped implement reforms. He eventually left to become a hermit. Ubald was persuaded to return and was appointed Bishop of , but he refused the honor. Two years later in 1128 he was appointed Bishop of Gubbio, the same position previously held by his uncle. In this role he worked to dissuade Emperor Frederick II from attacking the city. Monday, May 17: Bl. Antonia Mesina— and Bl. Antonia Mesina was born to a poor family in Orgosolo, Italy on June 21, 1919. She attended school for four years before dropping out to perform housework for her now-bedridden mother. She joined Catholic Action when she was ten years old and became a successful recruiter for the organization. On May 17, 1935, after attending Mass with a friend, she went to gather firewood. Antonia was approached by a man named Ignazio who attempted to rape her. She escaped from him twice, but he caught up to her a third time and struck her with a rock 74 times until she passed away. Ignazio was tried for murder and sentenced to death by firing squad the following year. Tuesday, May 18: St. Theodotus of Ancyra—Martyr Theodotus was born in Ancyra, Turkey sometime during the third century. He was married and worked as an innkeeper. Theodotus was known for his virtue and charity. During the Diocletian persecutions, seven virgins were martyred for refusing to don pagan priestess robes and partake in the festivals. Theodotus located their bodies and gave them a proper Christian burial. He was betrayed to the pagan authorities for this act of charity and under- went torture before being killed by the sword around the year 303. Wednesday, May 19: St. Ivo of Kermartin—Priest St. Ivo Helroy was born to a noble family in Kermartin, on October 17, 1253. During his educa- tion he studied civil and canon law. As a , he regularly defended the poor free of charge and fought to defend the rights of the Church against secular control. He became a Franciscan tertiary and served as a diocesan judge. Ivo left behind the legal profession and was ordained to the priesthood in 1284. He was known for his holiness, regular fasting, wearing a hair shirt under his clothing, and performing miracles. While on his deathbed someone called for a doctor to which Ivo replied that his doctor was Jesus Christ.

Thursday, May 20: St. Bernardine of Siena—Confessor Born in Massa Martittima in the Republic of Siena, St. Bernadine was orphaned at a young age and was raised by his devout aunt. He joined the Confraternity of Our Lady, where he cared for the sick, espe- cially during the great pestilence of 1400. Four years later, he became a Father of the Strict Observance of St. Francis. As a friar, he preached devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. In great humility, St. Berna- dine thrice turned down appointments to become a bishop. He was appointed Vicar General of his or- der, but he later resigned that role to resume preaching the Gospel until his death in 1444.

Friday, May 21: St. Mateo Correa Magallanes—Priest and Martyr St. Mateo Magallanes was born to a poor family in Tepechitlán, Mexico on July 23, 1866. He was ordained a priest on August 20, 1893. As a priest he was known for his energy and successful preaching. Mateo administered First Holy Communion to the future martyr, Bl. Miguel Pro. In 1927, during a period of persecutions against the Church, Mateo was arrested by the authorities while bringing Viaticum to a dying parishioner. He quickly consumed the host to prevent its desecration. While imprisoned, Mateo was asked by a military official to hear the Confessions of some members of the Cristeros. Being a faithful priest, he accepted the request. Following this, the military official ordered Mateo to reveal the contents of the Confessions, which he refused to do as he was bound by the Sacramental Seal. He was shot to death by a firing squad on February 6, 1927.

Saturday, May 22: St. Quiteria—Virgin and Martyr St. Quiteria was born to a noble family in , sometime during the second century. She was the daughter of Lucius Catilius Serves, who served as Roman governor of Gallaecia and Lusitania. Her father wanted her to renounce the Christian Faith she had embraced and marry a Roman nobleman. She refused and fled home. Her father hired some men to track her down and they located her at Aire-sur-l’Adour, in Gascony. The men beheaded Quiteria. ADORATION LECTOR SCHEDULE
