May, 2019 Worthy Sir Knights, We are finally closing in on the end of the fraternal year and it has been a great one. May is upon us and with it comes beautiful weather, Mother's Day, Graduations, and the honoring of service members that made the ultimate sacrifice, Memorial Day. The recent Patriot Trail event to the National Museum of the Marine Corps was a great opportunity to reflect on these brave soldiers and we will have more opportunities to do so in the future. The State Convention ended a week ago as well and with it comes the election of new state officers, we send our sincere congratulations to State Deputy-Elect Bob Szerzynski and his team with wishes for an outstanding year ahead. Theme for this upcoming year chosen by Bob is “Let Your Light Shine”. We have several events upcoming including our Color Corps Training on 18 May, Archdiocese of Military Services Memorial Mass on 19 May, and our regular monthly Assembly meeting on 20 May. Looking forward to June we have the Diocesan Ordinations for Deacons (1 JUN) and Priests (8 JUN) along with our next Patriot Trail to the US Naval Academy and CJB Memorial, date TBD. Our next monthly Assembly meeting will be at EDW at 7 PM on Monday, 20 May 2019, this change is due to Memorial Day on the 27th which if you are free please check out the ceremo- ny at Arlington National Ceremony put on by the VFW, American Legion, and Dept of VA for our veterans at 11 AM. Please make sure you let our Faithful Purser Michael Farrell know of your attendance so we will have enough food prepared. Look forward to seeing you all soon, enjoy the Spring time! Vivat Jesus! Bertha was related to the Dukes of Lorraine and she owned extensive properties on the Rhine. She married a pagan, and when he was killed in battle, she devoted herself to rais- ing her son Rupert as a Christian. She founded several hospices for the poor, and after a visit to Rome, they gave away their possessions and became hermits near Bingen (Rupertsberg), Germany. Rupert died when he was twenty years old, and she spent the remaining twenty-five years of her life there. Her feast day is May 15th. St. Ubald Baldassini... Ubald Baldassini was born of a noble family in Gubbio Italy, was orphaned in his youth, and was educated by his uncle, the Bishop of Gubbio. Ubald was ordained, was named deacon of the cathedral, reformed the canons, and then left a few years later to become a hermit. Dissuaded from the eremitical life by Peter of Rimini, he returned to Gubbio and in 1126, was named Bishop of Perugia but refused the honor. He became Bishop of Gubbio in 1128 and persuaded Emperor Frederick II not to sack Gubbio, as he had Spoleto during one of his forays into Italy. Ill the last two years of his life, Ubald died at Gubbio on May 16, and was canonized in 1192. His feast day is May 16th. St. Pope John I…. St. John I, Pope and Martyr , A native of Tuscany in Italy, John was elected Pope while he was still anarchdeacon upon the death of Pope Hormisdas in 523. About the time of St. John's acces- sion to the Papacy, Theodoric' the Goth, ruler of Italy and an Arian, changed his policies on Cath- olics as a result of two events: correspondence between ranking members of the Roman Senate and Constantinople, and the severe edict against heretics enacted by the Emperor Justin I, who was the first Catholic on the Byzantine throne in fifty years. Theodoric threatened to wage war against Justin but ultimately decided to negotiate with him through adelegation of fiveBishops and four senators. At its head he named Pope John , and while little is known for certain about the nature of the message which the Pope bore, it is known is that he succeeded in persuading the Emperor to miti- gate his treatment of the Arians and thus avoid reprisals against the Catholics in Italy. The Pope's visit also brought about the reconciliation of the Western and Eastern Churches which had been plagued by a schism since 482 . How- ever, Theodoric had been becoming more suspicious with each passing day. While waiting for the delegation to re- turn, he ordered the execution of the philosopher Boethius and his father-in-law Symmachus on a charge of trea- son; and as he got word of the friendly relations between the Pope and the emperor, he concluded that they were plotting against him. On the delegation's return to the capitol city of Ravenna, Pope John was imprisoned by order of Theodoric and died a short time later as a result of the treatment he experienced there. 5 Navigator’s Log May—June 2019 Commodore John Barry Assembly, Arlington, Virginia Veterans Honor Flight Volun- Honoring those who served teers Needed Honoring our veterans, especially the World War II gen- eration, is a tremendous act of patriotism and gratitude, and it’s a lot of fun to do as a family , Scout Troop, hom- eroom class, soccer team, or even Commodore John Bar- ry Assembly. CJB Assembly supports these programs as a part of our patriotic responsibilities. We will announce future dates in this space as they are announced. Your participation is simple: Show up, wait for arrival of the veterans and their escorts, cheer their arrival and say thanks for their service. After arrival you can help out passing out drinks and making sure they feel welcome. You need to arrive 20 minutes before ex- pected arrival time, stay through the event if you wish, and help clean up at the end.
