May 16th, 2021 A.D. – Sunday after the Ascension Gregorian Latin liturgy Until 1969, the various Catholic liturgies were all of apostolic origin. The Gregorian Latin liturgy, celebrated in this church, fol- lows the tradition of Saint Peter, the first Pope, and has never undergone any essen- tial change till the present time. Every ges- ture, every word has been weighed and measured with the assistance of the Holy Ghost for the greatest glory of God and the salvation of souls. Welcome Visitors! We thank you for coming. It is a special time for us Catholics to pay homage to our Blessed Mother. She has a unique role in our salvation as the Mother of God, conceived without sin, who by her own free will agreed to bring the “Word made flesh", (John 1:14) our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ into the world. **** Easter Duty. We have the obligation to receive Holy Communion worthily anytime between the First Sunday of Lent and Trinity Sunday. **** St. Ubald was born to a noble family in Gubbio, Italy but was orphaned when he was still young. He was educated by his uncle, the Bishop of Gubbio. After St. Ubald was ordained, he was made a deacon of the cathedral, but left a few years later to become a hermit. He was eventually convinced to return to the world. He was named Bishop of Gubbio in 1128. As Bishop he convinced Emperor Frederick II not to sack Gubbio. He was canonized in 1192. **** St. Bernardine of Siena was born in Massa Marittima, Italy on September 8th, 1380. He was a priest and Franciscan missionary. His popular preaching made him famous during his own lifetime because it was frequently directed against sorcery, gambling, infanticide, witchcraft, sodomy, Jews, and usury. St. Bernardine died on May 20th, 1444 and was canonized by Pope Nicholas V on May 24th, 1450. He is referred to as “the Apostle of Italy” for his efforts to revive the country's Catholic faith during the 15th century. “The LORD is in his Holy Temple; ON OUR CONFIDENCE TO THE MOTHER OF GOD. St. Alphonsus Liguori (2) He concludes this explanation in the following words: “Then, to say all in a few words, the God of all holiness, in order to glorify the Mother of the Redeemer, has decreed and ordained, that her great charity should pray for all those for whom her Divine Son has paid and offered the most superabundant price of his precious blood, in which alone is our salvation, life, and resurrection. And on the foundation of this doctrine, and inas- much as they accord with it, I have intended to lay down my propositions, which the saints, in their affectionate colloquies with Mary, and in their fervent discourses upon her, have not hesitated to assert.” In the third chapter of the first volume, St. Alphonsus compares the hope which we place in the Blessed Virgin to the confidence which a per- son has in a minister of state whom he asks to procure a favor from his sovereign. “Whatsoever Mary obtains for us, she obtains it through the merits of Jesus Christ, and because she prays in the name of Jesus Christ.” “Mary, then, is said to be omnipotent in the manner in which omnipotence can be understood of a creature; for a creature is inca- pable of a divine attribute. Thus she is omnipotent, inasmuch as she obtains by her pray- ers whatever she asks.” To obtain favors through the intercession of Mary, by practicing devout exercises in her honor, “the first condition is, that we perform our devotions with a soul free from sin, or, at least, with a desire to give up sin.” “If a person wishes to commit sin with the hope of being saved by the Blessed Virgin, he shall thus ren- der himself unworthy and incapable of her protection.” To receive Holy Communion : - The most important requirement is to have a - You must be a baptized Catholic, having made great desire to receive the Body, the Blood, the a good confession since the last committed mor- Soul and the Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. tal sin - if any - in order to hopefully be in the You can humbly approach the Communion rail at state of Grace. any time after the Communion of the priest. - You must believe in the doctrine of Transub- Then, open your mouth wide and extend smooth- stantiation. “For anyone who eats and drinks without ly and horizontally your tongue. discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon him- There is no special order, so that nobody should self” (1 Cor. 11:29). feel compelled to follow a general movement. - You must observe one hour of Eucharistic fast Do not judge your neighbor who abstains from (except water and medicine.
