On Saturday, February 27th, the St. Mary Mazzarello Salesian Cooperators led the JESUS AND ME RETREAT for the children of St. EAS who are preparing for their First Holy Communion. This retreat is designed with a variety of engaging activities that teach the children more about the Eucharist, the Mass, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is also infused with Salesian spirituality. Fr. Grady, Fr. Easton, and the Knights of Columbus worked with the Cooperators to engage the children and deepen their knowledge of Jesus, as well as their relationship with Him. Fr. Easton spoke on the Eucharist and Adoration, and afterwards, the children had the opportunity to experience Eucharistic Adoration. They children learned about the Mass by listening to a true story read to them by a Cooperator. Salesians also told the stories of St. Dominic Savio and Blessed Laura Vicuna and how these holy people prepared for their own First Holy Communion. The children handled dirt, chocolate syrup, and various other materials representing what sin does to our souls. They learned what a beautiful gift we have in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Knights of Columbus reenacted the Last Supper and explained how the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is connected to the Last Supper. Fr. Grady gave a tour of the Church highlighting the most important items and their purposes. The parents had the opportunity to learn about St. John Bosco's preventive system and how reason, religion, and loving kindness, when applied to the way we interact with youth, helps our children build a strong foundation in the Catholic faith. The Salesian Cooperators consider themselves blessed to have led this First Holy Communion Retreat and will continue to pray for all those little ones who will be receiving our Lord for the first time on Saturday, April 24th.

THE FIRE WITHIN Many miracles in the life of one very humble priest!

The remarkable life of Father Ubald Rugirangoga, a renowned Catholic priest and genocide survivor from Rwanda recognized as a healer and “Apostle of Forgiveness,” was celebrated with a vigil and funeral Mass at the of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City in January. It is with a heavy heart I share with you that he died at the age of 64.

Many of you may remember him because he came to our parish last year and did an Eucharistic Healing Service. The church was packed. A good number of people reported healings that evening and gave testimony to them.

Leoncie Uwingabire, a native of Rwanda now living in the US, said Father Ubald is the “spiritual father of our nation that pulled our country out of genocide and gave us hope.” Marcie with Fr. Ubald Katsey Long, who acted as Father Ubald’s agent in America and a close friend, said people were drawn to his joyful nature and described him as ‘extraordinarily ordinary.’ “Most people walk into a room and adjust themselves to the temperature of the room. Father Ubald walked into the room and changed the temperature by his very presence. Forgiveness and reconciliation will be his greatest legacy, but also the fact that he was the spiritual father of a nation that came out of a horrible genocide,” Long said.

Father Ubald’s body was transported back to Rwanda for burial and it is anticipated that many will pray for him to be declared a .

Father Ubald’s legacy— what is it?

Between April and July 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were slaughtered as Hutu extremists killed their Tutsis neighbors. Father Ubald was among those who survived, but lost 80 family members. As he grieved and prayed, he received divine guidance that the only way he and his people could heal was through forgiveness and reconciliation. It was a message the priest openly shared with thousands as he spoke to packed stadiums and visited genocide convicts in prison for many years all over the world.

During one prison visit in 2005, a man admitted to killing Father Ubald’s mother and begged him for forgiveness. Although initially difficult, the priest embraced the man, then went on to mentor and help care for the man’s motherless children. His actions inspired countless others to Marcie with a parish family in Rwanda do the same. His mission of peace and reconciliation became known worldwide and his work has been featured in a documentary, “Forgiveness: The Secret of Peace.” Father Ubald’s efforts led to the establishment of the Center for the Secret of Peace in Rwanda.

“The Rwandan community will miss him so much, as will the entire world for what he has done,” a long time friend said. “His work will remain in our hearts forever. We will remember him forever. It is our time to continue his mission and continue what he started.”

Could Father Ubald be declared a saint? Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Kibeho (Polish priest, Fr. Kaim, Fr. Ubald) A priest named Father Mangum recently assisted in starting the process of for five priests who died in the yellow fever of 1873. The process can take several years to initiate and involves researching every aspect of the person’s life. Father Mangum said canonization is definitely possible for Father Ubald.

“His life and message were so extraordinary,” Father Mangum said. “I think it is very likely that Father Ubald will be considered a servant of God and that they will initiate a cause for beatification and canonization.”

The first level of the canonization process is to be found worthy as a “Servant of God.” The second level involves using documents and testimonies to show the candidate lived heroic virtues. When approved, the candidate is deemed “Venerable”. If evidence of a first miracle is investigated and verified, the candidate is then declared “Blessed.” When a second miracle is confirmed, the candidate is then declared a Saint and canonized by the Pope.

Long is planning to make a case for Father Ubald’s sainthood. “He was gifted. Miracles followed him everywhere. He was kind to people of all social classes and circumstances, among many other things. I would say if he’s not a saint, nobody should be. There’s no hope for any of us if he’s not a saint,” Long said. “Being a saint means you’re living in Heaven and that there are still miracles attributed to people praying for your intercession.” I was very blessed to be able to travel with Fr. Ubald on pilgrimage to Rwanda in 2013. Our blessed Mother appeared to some school girls in Kibeho, Rwanda years before the genocide and told the girls that if the people of Rwanda did not repent of their sinfulness a terrible thing would happen and they were shown visions. As we know, the people did not repent and the genocide occurred exactly as our Blessed Mother foretold. The Vatican approved these apparitions and Our Lady of Kibeho is now one of the dozen or so approved Marian apparition sites around the world– just as Lourdes and Fatima are.

Traveling to Rwanda is Marcie with the visionary, Nathalie, not easy as you must and Fr. Kaim fly long hours and do without many of the comforts of home. Not a lot of hot water. Big spiders. The Blessing of Easter food baskets on Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday morning is a tradition among Roman and Eastern Catholics, including Czechs, Croatians, Hungarians, Lithuanians, Poles, Russians, Slovaks, and Ukrainians. What goes into the basket depends on the region one is from, the family preferences, and financial means. Instead of ham, for example, some Croatians and Slovenes place lamb in their baskets. Western Slovaks may include a veal loaf. In wine-making regions like Hungary and Croatia, a bottle of wine will go into the basket. Other regions add green spring vegetables to their baskets. Years ago in rural villages, it was a mark of wealth when an overflowing basket of Easter delectables was presented to be blessed. Over-the-top displays are less common these days— more often families will just put a sample of these foods in the basket. Since Catholics and Orthodox Christians fast during Lent, not one morsel of this blessed food is consumed until after Mass on Easter Sunday when it becomes the traditional Easter breakfast. COMMON BASKET ITEMS

While tastes vary by region and family, the basket generally contains certain “staple” items— bread, butter, pysanky (decorated) eggs, sausage, ham and/or lamb, smoked meat, cheese, salt, and cake. A candle is placed in the basket so it can be lit during the basket blessing. Some families tie a bow or ribbon around the basket handle. The basket is finally covered with a beautiful embroidered cloth. Traditionally, none of the food is eaten until after Mass on Easter Sunday, and when it is time—as custom dictates—each member of the household samples at least a bite of everything in the basket for “good luck”. Although there are differences in the basket items depending on the particular ethnic traditions, most of Paska bread and Pysansky (eggs) the eastern European countries have a lot of cross-over in what goes in the basket. Bread (Paska)- The word paska comes from the Jewish Passover (in Hebrew, pesach and in Greek, pascha), Paska is the loaf of sweet bread (sometimes studded with orange or lemon peel and raisins). It is a symbol of Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life. Paska is typically decorated with a braid around the perimeter and a cross or other religious symbol on top. Sometimes a hole is left in the middle for a candle to be inserted. The Greeks will put a red colored hard-boiled egg in the center of the bread. Butter- is symbolic of the goodness of Christ that we should emulate toward others. It can be shaped into a lamb mold or simply packed into a glass container with cloves arranged into a cross shape on the top. Horseradish- Horseradish, especially mixed with grated beets, is symbolic of Christ's passion and the blood He shed. Decorated Hard-boiled Eggs (Pysanky)- These hard-cooked eggs, (dyed red in the Orthodox faith), and decorated elegantly using the wax-resist method, are symbolic of new life and Christ's Resurrection. Sausage (kolbasa)- either fresh or smoked, is symbolic of God's favor and generosity and is always present in the basket. Ham / Lamb- is symbolic of great joy and abundance. Some households prefer veal or lamb, which reminds us that Jesus is the Lamb of God. Smoked Bacon- with its great fattiness, is a symbol of the overabundance of God's mercy and generosity. Salt- a necessary element in life, is symbolic of prosperity and justice and is included in the basket to remind us that we are to be the salt of the earth. Cheese- fresh dry curd (hrudka) or farmer's cheese (not aged). The cheese is bland and it symbolizes moderation. Candle- may be lighted at the blessing, represents Christ as the Light of the World. Easter Basket Cover and Decorations- traditions vary in adding decorations to the basket. People use bows, ribbons, greenery, pussy willows, or flowers attached to the basket as signs of joy and new life in the Resurrection. The food is covered with a special cloth symbolizing Christ's burial shroud. It is usually made of linen or other fine cloth and is embroidered with religious symbols related to the Resurrection and the celebration of Easter. These basket covers are passed down from generation to generation.

Fr. Grady will be blessing Easter baskets on Holy Saturday (April 3) at 10am.
