This retreat is designed with a variety of engaging activities that teach the children more about the Eucharist, the Mass, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is also infused with Salesian spirituality. Fr. Grady, Fr. Easton, and the Knights of Columbus worked with the Cooperators to engage the children and deepen their knowledge of Jesus, as well as their relationship with Him. Fr. Easton spoke on the Eucharist and Adoration, and afterwards, the children had the opportunity to experience Eucharistic Adoration. They children learned about the Mass by listening to a true story read to them by a Cooperator. Salesians also told the stories of St. Dominic Savio and Blessed Laura Vicuna and how these holy people prepared for their own First Holy Communion. The children handled dirt, chocolate syrup, and various other materials representing what sin does to our souls. They learned what a beautiful gift we have in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Knights of Columbus reenacted the Last Supper and explained how the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is connected to the Last Supper. Fr. Grady gave a tour of the Church highlighting the most important items and their purposes. The parents had the opportunity to learn about St. John Bosco's preventive system and how reason, religion, and loving kindness, when applied to the way we interact with youth, helps our children build a strong foundation in the Catholic faith. The Salesian Cooperators consider themselves blessed to have led this First Holy Communion Retreat and will continue to pray for all those little ones who will be receiving our Lord for the first time on Saturday, April 24th. 3 THE FIRE WITHIN Many miracles in the life of one very humble priest! The remarkable life of Father Ubald Rugirangoga, a renowned Catholic priest and genocide survivor from Rwanda recognized as a healer and “Apostle of Forgiveness,” was celebrated with a vigil and funeral Mass at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City in January. It is with a heavy heart I share with you that he died at the age of 64. Many of you may remember him because he came to our parish last year and did an Eucharistic Healing Service. The church was packed. A good number of people reported healings that evening and gave testimony to them. Leoncie Uwingabire, a native of Rwanda now living in the US, said Father Ubald is the “spiritual father of our nation that pulled our country out of genocide and gave us hope.” Marcie with Fr. Ubald Katsey Long, who acted as Father Ubald’s agent in America and a close friend, said people were drawn to his joyful nature and described him as ‘extraordinarily ordinary.’ “Most people walk into a room and adjust themselves to the temperature of the room. Father Ubald walked into the room and changed the temperature by his very presence. Forgiveness and reconciliation will be his greatest legacy, but also the fact that he was the spiritual father of a nation that came out of a horrible genocide,” Long said. Father Ubald’s body was transported back to Rwanda for burial and it is anticipated that many will pray for him to be declared a saint. Father Ubald’s legacy— what is it? Between April and July 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were slaughtered as Hutu extremists killed their Tutsis neighbors. Father Ubald was among those who survived, but lost 80 family members. As he grieved and prayed, he received divine guidance that the only way he and his people could heal was through forgiveness and reconciliation. It was a message the priest openly shared with thousands as he spoke to packed stadiums and visited genocide convicts in prison for many years all over the world. During one prison visit in 2005, a man admitted to killing Father Ubald’s mother and begged him for forgiveness. Although initially difficult, the priest embraced the man, then went on to mentor and help care for the man’s motherless children. His actions inspired countless others to Marcie with a parish family in Rwanda do the same. His mission of peace and reconciliation became known worldwide and his work has been featured in a documentary, “Forgiveness: The Secret of Peace.” Father Ubald’s efforts led to the establishment of the Center for the Secret of Peace in Rwanda. “The Rwandan community will miss him so much, as will the entire world for what he has done,” a long time friend said. “His work will remain in our hearts forever. We will remember him forever. It is our time to continue his mission and continue what he started.” Could Father Ubald be declared a saint? Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Kibeho (Polish priest, Fr. Kaim, Fr. Ubald) A priest named Father Mangum recently assisted in starting the process of canonization for five priests who died in the yellow fever of 1873. The process can take several years to initiate and involves researching every aspect of the person’s life. Father Mangum said canonization is definitely possible for Father Ubald. “His life and message were so extraordinary,” Father Mangum said. “I think it is very likely that Father Ubald will be considered a servant of God and that they will initiate a cause for beatification and canonization.” The first level of the canonization process is to be found worthy as a “Servant of God.” The second level involves using documents and testimonies to show the candidate lived heroic virtues.
