The sun suddenly tumed palé, emitted brilliant rays of multi- colored light, spun three times on its axis and then, to the horror of the assembled multitude, “power-dived” dizzily to- wards earth. A terrified cry rose from the crowd as thousands fell to their knees thinking the end of the world was at hand. Among those present was a correspondent for one of the major News Services in this country. Next day, from Lisbon, he cabled a long and impressive story about the Miracle of the Sun. But it was never published. Chicago and New York were in the middle of the World Series and the long dispatch became a one-inch item relegated to page 24, literally snowed under with details of singles, errors, batting averages and home runs. This incident has been advanced as one of the explanations for the great “conspiracy of silence” conceming one of the most momentous happenings of our generation. Explain it as you will, the fact is that almost a quarter of a century went by before whisperings of the Fátima story began to malee themselves heard around the United States. In the early forties it was featured in a few pamphlets and occasional articles in religious magazines, read and duly noted by a comparatively small and devoted clientéle. Then—suddenly—the picture changed. Almost ovemight Fátima became a subject of universal interest. People were speaking of war as a punishment from God for sin; of a "peace plan from Heaven", brought to earth by the Mother of God, in person; of the grim necessity—in the face of the gravest crisis ever to confront humanity—of making sacri- fices, of doing penance and of praying, especially of praying the Rosary, for peace and the conversión of Russia. A new book had just been published, entitled OUR LADY OP FÁTIMA, and it had jolted us out o£ the complacency of our Fool’s Paradise. As its author, William Thomas Walsh, pointed out the second World War could have 3 been prevented had men listened to the wamings of the Mothet of God. The spread of world Communism, the annihilation of nations behind an ever widening iron curtain, the persecution and martyrdom of innocent people—all this had been shown the world at Fátima in a disturbing preview of things to come unless men ceased ofFending the Son of God, "already too grievously offended.” Belatedly—but, thank God, at last—people were beginning to see in its frightening perspective the real nature of the struggle convulsing the world. We were in mortal combat, to the finish, not merely against flesh and blood but against Prindpalities and the Powers of Darkness. While there was no doubt as to the final outcome, the world was already pay- ing a ghasdy price for its frustration of the saving efforts of the Mother of God through sinful revolt against her Divine Son. It was only to be expected, people said, that pious writers should tell the story to the comparatívely few readers of re- ligious magazines. It was quite another thing—and America sat up and listened—when one of the most illustdous of con- temporary historians lent the prestige of his ñame to an ex- haustive study and documented story of apparitions that, in one way or in the other, would change the course of history. Certainly a perú sal of OUH LADY OF FÁTIMA jolted me out of my own benighted complacency in this regard; "jolted” me, I might add, into accepting an assignment of lee tures and sermons on the message of Fátima that has now carried me into 44 states over an uninterrupted period of more than sixyears. At the time Dr. Walsh became interested in the story of Fátima, he was recognized as a most distinguished author and scholar. Bom in Waterbury, Connecticut, he was educated in his own State and graduated from Yale with an A B. in 1913. His early career was devoted to teaching in his native State of Connecticut but it was not until he became a professor of English at Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart that he tumed his attention to writing. While at Manhattanville he began to write the magnificent biographies, Isabella of Spaitt, Philip the Second and The Life of St. Theresa of Ahíla, which established him as one 4 of the outstanding biographers of his era. In rapid succession novéis, plays and poetry sprang from his gifted pen. He received the Laetare Medal in 1941. In 1944 the Spanish Government awaided him the Cross of Commander of the Order of Alfonso the Wise; in the same year he received the Catholic Literary Award from the Gallery of Living Catholic Authors. Later, at Madrid, the Spanish Government again honored him with the Cross of Isabella the Catholic. His books had been published in many foreign languages and he is known throughout the en tire world. This was the man who, hearing the story of Fátima, set asíde all of his other works to go to Portugal to collect the material for a book which would tell the story of what had occurred in those momentous months in 1917. This book was otra LADY OF FÁTIMA which more than any other single factor has been instrumental in bringing the mi ráele of Fátima to the attention of millions of Americans. This sense of Dr. Walsh’s tremendous achievement was uppermost in my mind the day we brought the Pilgrim Virgin statue to the room in St. Agnes Hospital, White Plains, N. Y., where the great Apostle of Fátima lay dying. We spoke of the reception accorded his book and its important bearing upon the very survival of America. Knowing him as we did, we spared him the embarrassment of referring to something that for him was now of even greater import, the exemplary man- ner in which he himself had lived the message of Fátima. As he spoke to us, quietly and cheerfully, his gaze steadily fixed upon the incomparably beautiful Pilgrim Virgin that had come to him this day from the shrine of Fátima itself, we were impressed as rarely in our lives before with the radiant peacefulness of his expression, a peace that was truly not of this world. After all, we told ourselves, it was not hard to understand. It brought suddenly and arrestíngly to our minds the promise of Mary at Fátima to those who would be faithful to her requests that she would assist them at the hour of death “with all the graces necessary for salvation.” Dr. Walsh has left us, but his clarión cali stdll resounds throughout America and the menace to which he awakened us grows more serious with the passing hours. Experts 5 the world over vie with one another in lurid and terrifying details of the possible fate awaiting mankind. Oft repeated appraisal of the effects of a sneak atomic attack by Russia, without the amenity of any declaration of war, leave» no illusion as to what "may happen" unless something decisive and final be done to avert the ever-present danger of atomic madness. Frantically today the world is seeking reassurance and in the politícal and diplomatic sphere the world is seeking it in vain. For those who will take Mary at her word, that reassurance is to be found. "lf tny requests are heard“ she tells us, “Russia will be converted and there will be jpeace Let us face it. From Russia alone comes the danger of nuclear war that could be the end of this thing we calí civi- Uzatíon. However overpowering may be America’s ascend- ancy in atomic weapons, the world well knows that America will never initiate a “preventive” atomic war. Were Russia tomorrow to feel assured of final victory in an all-out atomic struggle we should all too soon be shocked into a realization of the pathetic futility of our contemporary gestures of ap- peasement and compromise, of our refusal to take a strong and uncompromising stand in the face of an enemy that re- spects and understands nothing else. A converted Russia! Therein lies our hope. That it will finally come about we are assured. We have the promise of the Mother of God during the last apparitíon at Fátima, a promise made on the occasion of the tremendous Miracle of the Sun. "In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Hóly Father will consécrate Russia to me, which will be converted and some time of peace vñll be granted to kumanity.” In the end? Some tíme of peace? Before—or after —the Wholesale slaughter of humanity in atomic war? That is for you and me to help decide.

    Miracles by Joe Sixpack Miracle: a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency (Webster’s). Miracle: A sensibly perceptible effect, surpassing at least the powers of visible nature, produced by God to Witness to some truth or testify to someone’s sanctity (Modern Catholic Dictionary). Ours is a very cynical world. Because we live in a post-Christian era where God is not only no longer believed in but actually mocked, miracles are seen as phenomena that can’t be explained only because we lack the technology to fully understand certain laws of nature. This cynicism has effected the Christian world as well. Even among our separated Protestant brethren I’ve heard it said we are beyond the age of miracles—that miracles no longer take place. Baloney! Miracles take place every single day throughout the world. Some of those miracles are working in a perpetual state, some for the entire two-thousand year existence of the Church. Fact of the matter is, the majority of miracles taking place around the globe happen only in the Roman Catholic Church. Take the incorruptibility of some of the saints for example. From St. Cecilia (d. AD 177) to Padre Pio (d. 1968), we have almost 2,000 years worth of ongoing miracles. Here are just a few of the more than one hundred: St. Catherine Laboure (of the Miraculous Medal) died on December 31, 1876. When her body was exhumed 56 years later it was unblemished.

    OBSERVANCE OF THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APPARITIONS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY AT FATIMA, PORTUGAL FATIMA. THE PLACE. THE MESSAGE. This year marks the 100th anniversary of arguably the most consequential private revelations in the history of the Church. Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, on six occasions, between May and October 1917, delivering a message that, to this day, converts hearts and casts shivers down the spine. Dressed in white and “brighter than the sun,” Mary spoke to the children of the dire costs if the world continues to reject God. She foretold events that would soon come to pass. She showed them a vision of hell. She taught them that God has designs for each of us. Six Popes have since proclaimed her specific and decisive call to conversion and repentance. As his two predecessors did before him, Pope Francis, who had his papacy dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima upon his election in 2013 – and who subsequently consecrated the world to her – will underscore Fatima’s significance with a visit there in May to mark the centennial. Fatima – 100 years ago a tiny hamlet, and now one of the most visited Christian pilgrimage locations in the world – is synonymous with the message Our Lady delivered there. At its core, the message is this: Without God, humanity walks in darkness, and we, individually, are called to be players in the salvation of the world. ‘Queen of Peace, pray for us.’ It was all as if Heaven had seen enough. Our Lady put her foot down during the horrors of World War I, what Pope Benedict XV called the “suicide of Europe.” It was Pope Benedict, who on May 5, 1917, ordered that “Queen of Peace, pray for us” be added to the Litany of Loreto.

It systematically analyzes key contradictions in working against racism from a white subject positions under post-Civil Rights Movement liberal color-blind white hegemony and "Black Power" counter-hegemony through a critical assessment of two major competing projects in theory and practice: white anti-racism [Part 1] and New Abolitionism [Part 2]. I argue that while white anti-racism is eminently practical, its efforts to hegemonically rearticulate white are overly optimistic, tend toward renaturalizing whiteness, and are problematically dependent on collaboration with people of color. I further argue that while New Abolitionism has popularized and advanced an alternative approach to whiteness which understands whiteness as ‘nothing but oppressive and false’ and seeks to ‘abolish the white race’, its ultimately class-centered conceptualization of race and idealization of militant nonconformity has failed to realize effective practice.

    The Message of Fatima 100th Anniversary – 2017 1914-Apparition At 7 years old I (Lucia) began tending our flock of sheep. One day as we (Lucia & some friends) saw for the 1st time a figure that had a human shape, whiter than snow and which the sun turned transparent. This apparition recurred twice again without manifesting itself and always suspended in the air, over the wood at the bottom of the “Cabezo.” When questioned by her mother, “As I did not know how to explain clearly and to free myself from questions, I replied that it looked like someone wrapped in a very white sheet.” 1st 1916 Apparition of the Angel After quickly praying the rosary Lucia dos Santos with cousins Francisco & Jacinta Marto started to play a game. “We were feeding our flocks in a property belonging to my parents called “Chousa Velha,” which lies at the bottom of a hill called “Cabezo,” on the east side. It was there that the Angel appeared to us for the 1st time in the form of a youth, as white as snow, shining more brightly then the sun and as transparent as crystal. We began to see this light coming towards us and thus we gradually distinguished the features. We were taken by surprise and being half bewildered we did not say a word. On reaching us he said, “Don’t be afraid. I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me!” And kneeling down, he bowed his forehead to the ground and made us repeat these words three times: My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee! I beg pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You.” “Pray thus.

    The Patron Saints and Devotions of the Benedictine Military Orders (Portugal and Castile, 15-16th Centuries) Paula Pinto Costa1 Raquel Torres Jiménez2 Joana Lencart3 Abstract This paper studies hagiographic devotion in the seigniories of the military orders: the Orders of Avis and Christ in Portugal and of Calatrava in Castile. Applying a common methodology and using similar sources for all three cases, this paper analyzes the written testimonies of the orders’ devotion to Christ and the Virgin Mary, as well as their veneration of the saints. These records were compiled from the visitations made to churches, hermitages, and confraternities between 1462 and 1539. The research was governed by two objectives: firstly, to construct a hagiographic overview of the selected territories by systematizing the data collected; and, secondly, to reflect on the typical devotional profile of the territories of the military orders as portrayed by the documentary evidence.     CONSECRATION AND FATIMA by Prof. Américo Pablo López-Ortiz International President of the World Apostolate of Fatima The soul and essence of the Message of Fatima is the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This maternal heart revealed its secrets at Fatima, showing the little shepherds the wonders of God’s love and mercy. Through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Fatima seers experienced the mystery of God and were immersed in God as in an infinite ocean of love. The light that came out of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was God himself and in this light they could see themselves as in the best of mirrors. Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco contemplated the mystery of the Most Blessed Trinity, receiving a special understanding of God’s nature, and at the same time were able to receive a special understanding of their own nature, of their own conscience. This was necessary to prepare the children for their mission on earth. On June 13, 1929, the Immaculate Heart of Mary appeared to Sister Lucia at Tuy, Spain, as Our Lady had promised her on July 13, 1917, to remind us of the practice of the First Saturday’s devotion and the consecration to her Immaculate Heart as the two providential means offered to the modern world to achieve peace and salvation of numerous sinners. While Sister Lucia adored the Blessed Sacrament at midnight, the Most Holy Trinity appeared to her accompanied by the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Lucia received lights about this mystery that she was not allowed to reveal. Our Lady said: “The moment has come when God asks the Holy Father, in union with all the Bishops of the world, to make the consecration ofRussia to my Immaculate Heart, promising to save it by this means.” By the word “consecration” is meant “entrustment”.

I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act.
