Analysis Kamelancien My research orientation: The intersection of Language, Religion and Music Linguistics French-Arabic • Interdisciplinary (language contact • Multilingual & sociolinguistics) • Multicultural • Multi-sensorial Ethnomusicology • Contemporary (rap lyrics) Religion This is a dynamic approach that links (Islam) language, culture and religion. These are core aspects of our humanity. Much of my work focuses on Haitian Vodou music. --La fin du monde by N.A.P. (1998) and Mauvais Oeil by Lunatic (2000) are considered breakthrough albums for lyrics that draw from the Arabic-Islamic lexical field. Since (2001) many artists have drawn from the Islamic lexical field in their raps. Intuitivt, musikaliskt, filmiskt, verklighetsfrånvänt - och ändå underligt bekant och nästan obehagligt oroande. Välkommen till Pixies nya studioalbum, “Beneath the Eyrie”, där sagor om häxor, Daniel Boone, missanpassade och andra karaktärer passar perfekt in i bandets medfödda dysfunktionalitet. Skivan innehåller 12 låtar och släpps – både digitalt och fysiskt - idag via Pixies nya label Infectious/BMG. Lyssna på albumet HÄR! Vi har redan fått två smakprov från plattan. Först kom ”On Graveyard Hill”, en klassisk Pixies-berättelse om omedelbar och överhängande undergång, skriven av Black Francis och Paz Lenchantin. För några veckor sedan släpptes “Catfish Kate”, som är en djupdykning i bandets frontman, Black Francis, mentala fantasivärld. ”Beneath The Eyrie” är inspelat i Dreamland Recordings nära Woodstock, NY. Producent är Grammy-nominerade Tom Dalgety (Ghost, Royal Blood, Pixies). Albumet fick sitt namn när David Lovering tog en paus utanför studion (som från början är en kyrka, St Johns Church, byggd i slutet av 1800-talet). Plötsligt upptäckte han ett örnbo, eller ”eyrie”, i ett träd i närheten - och skivans titel var ett faktum. Samtidigt med inspelningarna av albumet valde Pixies att dokumentera varje del av processen och berätta om vad som ägde rum i studion. Detta sammanställdes sen till en podcast i tolv delar som har fått titeln ”It’s A Pixies Podcast”. I podden får vi en unik inblick i hur alla spåren på skivan kom till; från början till slutförandet. Three days of partying, French language music and numerous local and international artists of renown are expected. Parallel to these concerts, on Sunday, 9th and Sunday, 10th of September, the “NC 1ère Village of the Francofolies” will be dedicated to the Caledonian scene. It will also be a place where the public can meet international artists. At the Tjibaou cultural centre days of Caledonian artists or bands on stage 3 concerts 6 before the international artists NC 1ère Festival Village, with over international artists 20 local artists (music, theatre, 8 or bands 1dance, etc.) A festival rooted in the Pacific as much as in the francophone world The festival is of course linked to the famous Francofolies Festival in La Rochelle, France, but it is also strongly oriented towards the world of Oceania. The aim is to present the different cultures in the entire Pacific, including the English-speaking regions. The Francofolies New Caledonia will also present numerous groups interpreting the Kaneka, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this style of music. -

Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

Biographical Notes World on Fire Peter Bowker Writer, World on Fire MASTERPIECE fans remember Peter Bowker’s impassioned adaptation of Wuthering Heights from 2009, which captured Emily Brontë’s masterpiece in all its complexity. With World on Fire he has created a plot with even more twists, turns, and memorable characters, centered on the chaotic events at the outset of World War II. Bowker has been an established screenwriter in the U.K since penning scripts for Casualty in the early 1990s. Since then, he has written for many long-running series such as Where the Heart Is and Clocking Off. His original work has included Undercover Heart; Flesh and Blood, for which he won Best Writer at the RTS Awards; Blackpool, which was awarded BANFF Film Festival Best Mini-Series and Global Television Grand Prize; and Occupation, which was awarded Best Drama Serial at the BAFTA Awards, in addition to Best Short-Form Drama at the WGGB Awards and another RTS Best Writer Award. He has since written Eric and Ernie and Marvellous. Both productions have won prestigious awards, including a Best Drama BAFTA for Marvellous, which became the most popular BBC2 single drama of the last 20 years. Most recently he has written an adaptation of John Lanchester’s novel Capital and two series of the acclaimed The A Word. Julia Brown Lois Bennett, World on Fire Driven to escape her cheating lover and dysfunctional family, Julia Brown’s character in World on Fire finds a wartime role that exploits her remarkable singing talent. Luckily, Brown herself is a gifted vocalist and sang much of the soundtrack that accompanies the episodes. -
