1. Have a desire to comfort grieving people and communicate with the public with tact, discretion, composure, and compassion;

2. Be willing to work long, irregular hours in high-stress situations that may involve contact with the remains of persons who had a contagious disease;

3. Able to provide efficient and appropriate services to the family, friends, and the deceased, including arranging the details, handling the logistics, and directing ;

4. Prepare remains for disposition, including embalming, reshaping and reconstruction disfigured or maimed bodies, applying cosmetics, and directing shipment of remains;

5. Complete and organize the paperwork involved with the person’s , such as filing for government benefits, insurance, pensions, and annuities on behalf of the survivors;

6. Prepare and keep records of expenses, purchases, and services rendered, including death certificates, permits, authorizations, and the prearrangement of funerals;

7. Able to use a computer and navigate the Internet;

8. Foster a cooperative spirit and attitude among employees and a compassionate demeanor towards the families;

9. Help individuals adapt to changes in their lives following a death through post-death support group activities;

10. Desires to serve others, tolerant of ways in which people are different, interested in the technical sciences, interested in learning, and motivated.

Physical Requirements

• Able to lift, push, pull, and manipulate heavy items; • Able to bend, stoop and climb; • Have bilateral manual dexterity; • Have fine motor skills and coordination; • Able to stand for long periods of time; • Able to sit for long periods of time. • Have a valid California driver’s license.

Bachelor in Science Degree in Funeral Service Mortuary Science Department

Program Description A course of study in funeral service education designed for licensed or certified funeral service professionals who wish to advance their career and employment opportunities. This baccalaureate degree completion program is unique as currently there are no other colleges or universities that offer this type of degree in the Western United States.
