0 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 20082009 2010 Fiscal Year Helping Children Heal in the Metro Annual Reports commonly deal in numbers – how many served, how much raised, how many volunteer hours donated. These are important measures of how an organization has served its community in any given year. And this report includes those measures. In the final analysis, the numbers all become one: helping one child, one place, one time - many times over.

Here are some of their stories...

A family of four trusted their 13-year-old neighbor boy to babysit their eight-year-old daughter and five- year-old son. The family learned that instead of caring for their children, this young man was sexually assaulting their daughter, in front of their son. The distraught family came to Project Harmony where they found professional investigative and medical services as well as assistance in finding treatment to help them heal. After counseling for the whole family, the children’s mother said, “In the interview room ... I was a shattered mommy. I finally feel like me again.” % Project Harmony evaluated more than 2,300 children suspected of having been victims of child abuse in 2010 % 57 percent of those were evaluated for child sexual abuse % More than half were under the age of six

Two children suffered abuse at the hands of their own father for seven years. They tried repeatedly to tell someone about it, but they’d recant each time out of fear. The specially trained interviewers at Project Harmony finally gained the children’s trust so they could talk about the horrific details of their abuse. Project Harmony then worked closely with Child Protective Services and law enforcement to ensure the children’s safety. The interviews were corroborated, sparing the children the trauma of testifying against their father. The children and their mother are in therapy, and their father was recently sentenced. Project Harmony offers services that lead to healing for victims. These services include: % Forensic interviews – When requested Forensic Interviews and Medical Exams by law enforcement or Child Protective Conducted at Project Harmony Services, a child interview specialist 2500 conducts a recorded forensic interview Interviews with the child. This reduces the number Medical Exams of times the child must tell their story. 2000 Total % Medical examinations – The role of our medical and nursing staff is to provide 1500 physical and sexual abuse assessments and comprehensive physical exams for alleged victims. 1000

500 Total Interviews and Exams and Interviews Total

0 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 Forensic Interviews and Medial Exams protectionConducted at Project Harmony % Referrals and advocacy – Once each child’s needs are assessed, he/she and the …to non-offending family is referred to the appropriate therapy, support groups and other resources. Nearly 3700 advocacy service contacts were provided to victims in 2010. % Case staffings Consisting– of representatives from law enforcement, Child collaborate Protective Services, the medical, legal and educational communities, Project Harmony staff and other professionals, multidisciplinary Investigative and Treatment teams in Douglas, Sarpy and Pottawattamie counties regularly review with individual cases to assure that children do not “fall through the cracks.” % Training – Project Harmony continually promotes training and education opportunities to child abuse and neglect professionals throughout the Omaha- professionals Council Bluffs metro, 16 southwest Iowa counties and the state of Nebraska. In 2010, a total of 4600 professionals were trained through such venues as “Brown Bag” sessions, video conferences, webinars, on-site training and sponsored training sessions offered in conjunction with the annual Speaking of Children event.

A five-year-old girl and her three-year-old brother watched as their dad beat up their mom. The little girl had a hard time talking about the abuse, but once she did, she told about how her daddy kicked and punched her mommy. The toddler boy couldn’t verbalize what happened. Instead, he acted out. The father was arrested. Meanwhile, Project Harmony referred the woman to a shelter, helped her get a protection order, referred her to counseling for domestic violence, found an education and support group for her, and got her children into play therapy and a support group. The family continues to heal together. Project Harmony addresses the problems that abused children face every day, and that they would continue to suffer without the proper intervention. These include: % Fears and phobias % Anxiety, victimization and low self-esteem % Physical injuries and sexually transmitted diseases % Suicidal tendencies

A woman’s live-in boyfriend came home drunk one Friday night. He then had sex with the woman’s 10-year-old daughter, who told her mother about it. They went to the hospital right away for an examination. The hospital called the Emergency After-Hours Phone for Project Harmony, which conducts sexual assault exams on children under the age of 13. Medical staff, an advocate and forensic interviewer met law enforcement and Child Protective Services to proceed with the investigation. The distraught mother and child are now receiving the help and support they need in this trying time. Child abuse isn’t an 8:00 to 5:00 problem. Project Harmony is ready to help the children who need us, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 2010 Events and Highlights March 3, 2010 % Speaking of Children Keynote Luncheon Speaker: Marilyn Van Derbur Honorary Co-Chairs: Amy and Joe Moglia Event Chairs: Joani Mullin and Shelley Seimers Marilyn Van Derbur’s keynote luncheon speech to the audience of 1200 at Project Harmony’s 3rd Annual Speaking of Children was stunning. The former Miss America and national spokesperson for AT&T told of her “night child” sexual abuse by her father from ages five to eighteen and of her adult life plagued with the unrelenting torture of subliminal memory. Healing could not occur “until the night child had been fully heard, honored and integrated.” Van Derbur’s passionate message of the need for openness, the hard work of resolution and the gift of hope brought insight to all. Marilyn Van Derbur Honored at Speaking of Children were the 2010 Kids First Award honorees: Gary Perkins Chief Executive Officer, Children’s Hospital & Medical Center Jackie Rickert Child Welfare Supervisor, Child Protective Services Iowa Department of Human Services Teresa Thorson Sergeant, Child Victim/Sexual Assault Unit Omaha Police Department Barbara Jessing Clinical Director, Heartland Family Service Jennifer Crystal- Deputy County Attorney, Juvenile Division Douglas County Attorney’s Office Joe and Amy Moglia March 30, 2010 % Harmony in Art Hosted by The Old Market Artists, the Annual Open House Art Show at Hot Shops attracted 400 people to the 1301 Gallery while offering a unique means of education and support for Project Harmony.
