Temple Israel Sanctuary The Ark, which is the central focus of the sanctuary, houses the Torah scrolls. Its doors MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE are carved with the Burning Bush. This represents a particularly moving moment in the early history of our people, when Moses accepted God’s mission and led the Jewish people out of Egypt to Sinai. It focuses on Reconstructionist rhetorical strategies, their efforts to establish a liberal basis of religious authority, and theories of cultural production. Constructing A Lively Community in the Midst of Oppression: Jewish Refugees Interned in Canada During WWII Sarah Zimbalatti HIST 4581 Professor Koffman April 6, 2021 Zimbalatti 1 Erwin Schild had been imprisoned in Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany in 1938 and was later permitted into Britain where he was interned and subsequently sent to internment overseas in Canada.1 Schild, who later became the rabbi for Adath Israel Congregation located in Toronto, wrote about his experiences which is evident from his fourth book titled The Crazy Angel. In his book, Schild offered readers an outlook on Canadian internment which he regarded as “A Canadian Footnote to the Holocaust.”2 His internment experiences on Canadian soil were ... dwarfed by the Holocaust [in Europe itself] and therefore remained relatively unknown, and yet it is related to the Holocaust as a footnote to a text. It could only have happened at that time, and only in a world that allowed the Holocaust to happen. It could have happened only because anti-Semitism was widespread, and because the world did not bother to understand Jews.3 Schild’s perspective on Canada’s treatment of Jews during this time in history was particularly interesting considering that while the Canadian army, including Jewish soldiers, fought against Nazism in Europe, Jewish refugees who fled Nazi persecution were interned in camps across Canada. Of course, in the years leading up to World War II, Canada’s federal government had implemented anti-Semitic and illiberal policies that most certainly harmed Jews. Canada’s restrictive immigration policies were negligent as the nation essentially acted as a bystander, refusing to provide a safe haven to Jewish refugees who were persecuted by the Nazi regime even though newspapers that detailed the attacks against German Jews were being circulated.4 This negligence is evident from the refusal of the M.S. -

ICJS WORKING PAPER Sharon Gubbay Helfer 2012-08-27 Rome Among the Bishops: a reflection on David Rome and his contributions to dialogue1 INTRODUCTION Born in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 1910, David Rome arrived with his parents in Vancouver, Canada, at the age of 11. He settled in Montréal in the late 1930s. In 1942 he was hired as press officer by the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC). From 1953 to 1972, he was Director of the Jewish Public Library; thereafter he served as archivist at the CJC. David Rome died Montréal in 1996. Rome was designated Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec, the Quebec government’s highest honour, in 1987. In 1991 the Quebec ministry of immigration and cultural communities awarded him their Prix d’excellence and in the same year he received a doctorate honoris causa from Montreal’s Concordia University. Historians of Quebec Jewry including Pierre Anctil, Ira Robinson and others, continue to refer to Rome as an inspiration for their work.2 And yet, with the exception of one excellent, short article by Robinson that focuses on Rome as historian of Canadian Jewish life, next to nothing has been published about him.3 One possible explanation for the paucity of published work on David Rome may be that he is not someone easily categorized. As well, as I argue here, an important part of his impact was felt behind the scenes, in private, through person-to-person dialogue. The material that I present in this article is based on my reading of a part of the voluminous material on Rome preserved at the Canadian Jewish Congress Charities Committee (CJCCC ) archives and at the archives of the Jewish Public Library of Montreal, as well as on archival material at the BAnQ, Centres d’archives de Québec, having to do with Quebec’s first Arts Council. -

During the more than 2,000 years of Jewish history, Judaism has been defined as a religion, a civilization, a nationality, an ethnicity, and a culture. In order to sort through all the aspects that make up these collective Judaisms, this course will be divided into three parts: History – we will begin with the biblical roots of Judaism in the Ancient Near East, then trace the development of Judaism into the Modern period within the two major Jewish communities of the US and Israel. This overview of historical events and movements will give us the context for understanding changing beliefs and practices. Beliefs - while Judaism is not a dogmatic religion with a defined creed of faith, we will still endeavor to delineate some major tenets of belief by examining foundational Jewish texts such as the Hebrew Bible and Talmud. Practices – this part will be devoted to exploring the core practices of Jewish life and attempting to understand what, if anything, is axiomatic to all Judaism. Moreover, stress will be placed on those aspects, such as holidays and life cycle events, which are pertinent to understanding the Jewish communities that students might encounter in their lives.
