Session 2: The 9 to 5 Window How Faith Can Transform the Workplace

Why Do You Work?

• – needs and material acquisition

• – known by what we do, versus Who we know

• – live for the “payoff”

Was Work Cursed?

“Cursed is the for your sake, in toil you shall eat of it. All the days of your life.

Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you… ” Genesis 3:17,18

1. From joy to a toil 2. Thorns and thistles would hamper people’s efforts to have dominion 3. People would have to “sweat” to accomplish their tasks 4. People lack purpose in their work

Many Workers Lack Purpose

San Francisco radio station survey revealed an 80% dissatisfaction rate for a person's work.

Wall Street Journal survey revealed a 50% dissatisfaction rate among executives and 80% dissatisfaction rate among general workplace population.

500 surveys among Christians reveal 50% dissatisfaction rate.

Sin separated man from a Holy God and purpose

“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save which was lost” Luke 19:10 “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself , whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” Colossians 1:19-20

Jesus Worked and Ministered In The Marketplace Jesus was more “qualified” to be a carpenter than the Son of God.

The 9 to 5 Window Workshop Page 7

Jesus & Paul Modeled Work Life Ministry

New Testament – Of 132 public appearance in NT, 122 in the marketplace

Of 52 parables Jesus told, 45 had a workplace context. Of 40 miracles in the book of Acts, 39 were in the marketplace.

Jesus spent his adult life as a carpenter until age 30 before he went into a preaching ministry in the workplace.

Work is mentioned more than 800 times in the Bible.

“His doing nothing ‘wonderful’ (his first 30-years) was in itself a kind of wonder.” Saint Bonaventure

More than 50% of his life as a carpenter.

God is not in a hurry!

Why Jesus Worked

1) To Do His Father’s Work

“The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing His work.” John 14:10-11

“My father is always at his work to this very day, and I too, am working.” John 5:17

2) To Bring Glory on Earth

“I have brought you by completing the work you gave me to do.” John 17:3-4

Each of us has a work He has called us to do that is born out of a relationship with Jesus.

Jesus did all of his work on earth as a human being, not as God.

He did miracles through the power of the Holy Spirit. If He did them as God he could not command us to do the same. We are called to do even greater works by the same power He used.

“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” John 14:12-13 Jesus Wants to Transform Your Work Life

The 9 to 5 Window Workshop Page 8

Need a Biblical View of Money, Motive & Profit

1 Samuel 17:25-26

David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel?”

 The king will give:

1) Great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him

2) His daughter in marriage

3) Exempt his father's family from taxes in Israel.

Jesus Has Need of Your Donkey

"Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them." Matthew 21:1-14

“I have need of your donkey.” Represented commerce Singapore donkeys Has a cross etched in his back.

Preparation

“In the beginning we do not train for God, we train for work, for our own aims; but as we go on with God we lose all our own aims and are trained into God’s purpose. Unless practical work is appointed by God, it will prove a curse.” -Oswald Chambers

Many jobs!

Which among these occupations would be considered the most spiritual vocation?

1) Missionary in Africa 2) An attorney 3) Pastor of a large church 4) Residential plumber 5) Billy Graham 6) All are equal

All Are Equal According to God’s Word!

The 9 to 5 Window Workshop Page 9

What the Word says about work

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.” Colossians 3:23-24

Work is Ministry?

“What is the difference between a job and a ministry? A job becomes a ministry when God leads you into the area and you take the voice of God, the anointing of God and biblical principles into that area as you work and minister.” -Peter Wagner: Church in the Workplace, p. 109

He Desires to Establish Our Work

“May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us – yes, establish the work of our hands.” Psalms 90:17

Called to “the ministry?”

“Usually a person should keep on with the work he was doing when God called him.” 1 Corinthians 7: 20 LB

Key Issues/Barriers

Sacred/Secular Equality in Calling Defining Ministry Local Church as An Equipper

Sacred vs Secular Worldview (Pluralism)

Catholic Distortion 312 A.D. during Catholic Era Elevated the at the expense of the . A spiritual form of – spiritual and secular. God has never separated the spiritual from the secular.

The 9 to 5 Window Workshop Page 10

Protestant Distortion Year: 1650 – A secular form of dualism – elevation of the secular at the expense of the spiritual. Work = vs a Reasons Christians see work and the spiritual two separate worlds.

4 Types of Christians In the Workplace

1) Survivor 80% dissatisfied with their jobs 50% among executives -Wall Street Journal 2) Principles 3) Holy Spirit 4) Transformer - Ed Silvoso

You are Called to Transform Your Workplace

Taxi-cab Driver Transforms His Workplace

The Local Church is Called to Equip Believers for Societal Transformation.

Current Challenges

Lack of Training in Local Church Consider:

have not been trained to apply Biblical faith in their work life. - Doug Sherman, Your Work Matters to God say preaching is irrelevant to daily life. - London Institute for Contemporary Christianity Church attendance is decreasing in America. Only 7% attend church in England.

The 9 to 5 Window Workshop Page 11

Problem: We Have Unbiblical View of Work and Ministry

Fail to See Work as a Holy Calling. “Church leadership has spent lots of its energy equipping us to do ministry, instead of ministry in the workplace.” - Dr. Myles Munroe

Result?

The Church of Jesus looks more like a luxury cruise liner instead of a battleship designed to equip and commission an army.

“…to prepare God's people for works of service.” Ephesians 4:11

David – Bringing God’s Presence into the City

“When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God.” 2 Samuel 6:6-7

“It was because you, the Levites, did not bring it up the first time that the LORD our God broke out in anger against us. We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.” 1 Chronicles 15:13-14

“For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.” Romans 10:2

Paradigm Shifts Required: How we define success

PASTOR BUSINESS OWNER Attendance Increased market share Programs (inside 4 walls) Competitive advantage Budget Increased profits Wealth building for the individual

VERSUS (GOD’S ECONOMY) VERSUS (GOD’S ECONOMY) Maturity of believers - Discovering God’s purpose for equipping men & women to the business fulfill THEIR destinies Funding Kingdom enterprises City impact Pastoring employees Kingdom projects Blessing your city

DNA change

The 9 to 5 Window Workshop Page 12

Church is Called to Influence by Blessing

“The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them.” Deuteronomy 28:13-14

Key: The Church blesses and influences through social entrepreneurship vs. becoming separatists.

A Church Growth Expert Observes the Role of Marketplace Leaders

“We have attempted to transform our cities for years without success. I now believe the reason is because pastors and church leaders do not have the authority to do so. That authority lies within those leaders in the marketplace. When we recognize and affirm the apostles in the marketplace we will begin to see the transformation of cities.” Peter Wagner

A Conversation in Heaven

“I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his house, and he will minister before my anointed one always.” 1 Samuel 2:35-36

“So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.” Genesis 45:8-9

“Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God” Genesis 41:38

There Will Always Be a Crisis of Belief Stage – Divine Setups

Crisis: A Circumcision Process To Refine Your Call

Why?

To bring you out of slavery of “Egypt” (sweat and toil in your work life).

“Then say to him, 'The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may in the desert.” Exodus 7:16

“In vain you rise early and stay up late, for food to eat.” Psalms 127:2

God Has To Disqualify You

God has to you from thinking you are for the mission He has for you. i.e. Moses, Joseph.

Moses

“Moses spent his first 40 years thinking he was somebody.

He spent his next 40 years learning he was nobody.

He spent his third 40 years discovering what God can do with a nobody.” -D.L. Moody

How Does God Transform an Esau into Joseph?

There must first be a transformation.

Who Was Joseph and What Prepared Him For His Calling?

God

“I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things.” Isaiah 45:7

“The LORD was with Joseph and he , and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.” Genesis 39:2

“He called down a famine on the land and destroyed all their supplies of food; and he sent a man before them – Joseph, sold as a slave. They bruised his feet with shackles, his neck was put in irons till what he foretold came to pass, till the word of the Lord proved him true.” Psalms 105:16-19

His “boot camp” took 13 years that required from his former life, having his will and anything taken away, a breaking of his will, a continued confrontation of his own crisis of belief that God was a loving God and that He was still in control of the events in his life.

Why Does God Call Us Out of Egypt?

God called the people out of Egypt in order for them .

Coming out of the Esau (self-life) can often mean a severe time of .

We are all in one of the three stages: 1) Still living in Egypt as an Esau. 2) In the process of our personal “pit experience.” Learning to eat manna. 3) Living in the Promised Land.

Not everyone needs to go through the severe “pit experience”, however, each of us must be .

Coming out of Egypt required passing through the .

Hebrew word for desert is midbaar, from the word dahbaar, meaning “ ”.

“Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her.” Hosea 2:14

The process of circumcision can be dependent on our with God. “If my

people would but listen to me, if Israel would follow my ways, how quickly would I subdue their

enemies and turn my hand against their foes.” Psalms 82:13,14

You must not seek to deliver yourself. You must simply obey. Provision and destiny follows obedience.

Every servant of God who had a great anointing also had great adversity- Abraham, Moses,

Elijah, Paul, David, Peter. Many business leaders who made a difference in the Kingdom also

experienced great adversity.

J.C. Penny In 1910 his first wife died. In 1923 his second wife died giving birth to his son. In 1929 the stock market crashed and he lost $40 million. By 1932, he had to sell out to satisfy creditors. This left Penney virtually broke. Crushed in spirit from his loss, his health suddenly failing, Penney wound up in a Battle Creek, Michigan sanatorium. One morning he heard the distant singing of employees who had gathered to start the day with God: Be not dismayed, whete'er betide, God will take care of you... Penney followed the music to its source and slipped into a back row. He left a short time later a changed man, his health and spirit renewed, and ready to start the long climb back at age fifty-six. By 1951 there was a J.C. Penney store in every state, and for the first time sales surpassed $1 billion a year.

“It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until he has hurt him deeply.” – A.W. Tozer

Key Objectives of the Process

To Be Trustworthy of a Large Vision Few men have been given the kind of power and authority that Joseph had at such an early age. It often leads to arrogance, irresponsible behavior, and a downfall.

“Not every man can carry a full cup. Sudden elevation frequently leads to pride and a fall. The most exacting test of all to survive is prosperity.” –– Oswald Chambers

Joseph was given privilege, power, and prestige. It takes a special person not to succumb to such temptation.

1) Geographical Control 2) Financial Authority 3) Social Prestige 4) Royal Privileges 5) Political Power 6) Religious Position

Hindrance # 3: Religious Spirit

Dr. Peter Wagner

Defines the religious spirit as “an agent of Satan assigned to prevent change and maintain the

status quo by using religious devices.”

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,

against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly

realms.” Ephesians 6:12

The 9 to 5 Window Workshop Page 27

Jesus Primary Opposition

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices - mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law - justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.” Matthew 23:23-24

Key Attributes of Religious Spirit

Seeks to ______a genuine move of God through deception, control and manipulation. Operates out of old religious structures and attempts to maintain the status quo, favoring tradition over a genuine, intimate relationship with God. Influences believers to live the Christian life based on works instead of grace. Depends on human effort to acquire spiritual knowledge and favor from God. Deceives believers into thinking that the only way to get God’s approval is through works. The spirit of religion’s primary strategy here is to promote the idea that belonging to a Christian church or doing religious things is what saves you or makes you holy and acceptable to God.

Paul Confronted Religious Spirit

“You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law , or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort ? Have you suffered so much for nothing—if it really was for nothing? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?” Galatians 3:1-5 (emphasis added)

Rich Young Ruler

“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth (Matthew 19:16-22).

Jesus cut through the religious spirit by speaking to the heart of his issue.

The 9 to 5 Window Workshop Page 28

First Martyr Result of Religious Spirit – Stephen

“Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people.” (Acts 6:7-8) Notice how Stephen began to make an impact on his city—by performing signs and wonders. However, his work also stirred up the religious spirit, and Stephen became the first person martyred for his faith.

Jesus was more qualified to be a carpenter than the Son of God.

Opposition to moves of God often come from religious community.

The Religious Spirit in the Workplace

Motivates believers to live out their faith in legalistic and rigid ways Examples:

They may have difficulty praying and applying God’s promises to everyday work encounters. They may believe that biblical truths apply only to their personal lives, families and churches, not to their jobs. They may focus on evangelizing coworkers, but fail to do their work with excellence. (hypocrisy) They may give greater priority to religious activity and events than to relationships with others at work or work itself.

Especially evident in the southern regions of the United States.

In The Workplace

They maintain a “we” or “I” versus “them” attitude when relating to non-Christians in the workplace (Jesus hung out with sinners). They may refuse to join a workplace prayer group or Bible study because they feel that it is trying to replace the role of a particular local church. They don’t see a need for such activity in the workplace. They feel the need to compartmentalize faith activities to their local church alone. They discount the idea that Christianity could transform a workplace, city or nation as “overzealous,” “naïve” or even doctrinally wrong.

Martin Luther confronted Religious Spirit

“Remember Martin, just to pray by yourself is not enough. The church has to pray for you too. Even when the priest has asked that you be forgiven, God will not listen unless you do good works. The more gifts you give to the church and to the poor, the more trips you make to Rome and Jerusalem, the more pleasures you give up, the better will be your chances for heaven. The best and safest way to do all this, and the one that is most God pleasing, is to give up everything and become a monk.”

The 9 to 5 Window Workshop Page 29

Muslim Conflict Rooted In Religious Spirit

Rigid – our way only Manipulation of followers Distorted way to be accepted by God Deception – martyrdom = virgins Works - pray 4 times a day, follow rules to gain God’s approval

4 ways Jesus Operated Free of Religious Spirit

1. Hung out with sinners 2. Met their needs 3. Prayed for them 4. Gave them the Gospel

Knowledge Vs Power

Keep conversations about Jesus, not church affiliation. Focus on their needs.

Jesus changed her paradigm. Talked to a woman. (Jews & Samaritans – workplace & faith) Jesus gave a Word of Knowledge about her life. Supernatural in the marketplace.

“Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers.” (John 4:39-41)

Hindrance #4: Spiritual Strongholds in the Workplace

God created us with seven primary needs: 1. Dignity 2. Authority 3. Blessing & provision 4. Security 5. Purpose & meaning 6. Freedom & boundary 7. Intimate love & Companionship - Genesis 1&2

Whenever we seek to meet one or more of these basic needs outside God’s design we have set the stage for the development of a generational stronghold.

Spiritual Strongholds Work At The Subconscious Level. Their Influence Is Often Unseen Until There Is A Problem.

Strongholds are designed to keep us from experiencing God’s love.

 Strongholds are often .

All strongholds that are built in our lives are a result of seeking to meet one or more of these needs apart from God’s will for us.

“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish . We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every to make it obedient to Christ.” -(2 Corinthians 10:5)

Examples of Some Major Strongholds

Rebellion Fear Pride Heaviness/Depression Insecurity Jealousy Sexual Impurity Religiosity Control Rejection Independence Deceit Doubt Doubt & Unbelief Anger

The 9 to 5 Window Workshop Page 31

“You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments” (Exod. 20:5)

Stronghold Definition

“...the Apostle Paul enlists the word “stronghold” to define the spiritual fortresses wherein Satan and his legions hide and are protected. These fortresses exist in the thought-patterns and ideas that govern individuals and churches, as well as communities and nations. Before victory can be claimed, these strongholds must be pulled down and Satan’s armor removed.” – Francis Frangipane

Stronghold Development Process

1) Satan inspires into my mind (subconsciously) which appeal to my natural

tendencies to meet needs.

2) Entertaining these thoughts brings on .

3) Giving in to emotions eventually leads to taking some sort of .

4) Continual participation in this behavior causes me to develop a .

5) Once a habit is developed, a is built by that spirit.

Strongholds oppress versus possess They: 1) Control, dictate, and influence our attitudes and behavior;

2) Oppress and discourage us; and

3) Affect how we view or react to situations, circumstances, or people.

We overcome the influence of strongholds by renouncing and repenting of their influence through the prayer of faith in Jesus’ blood to cleanse us from these influences.

The Symptom Merely Indicates there is a Root

Other Factors Likeminded strongholds attract one another. The primary stronghold of the marketplace is

.

Companies can attract the same stronghold.

Churches can attract the same stronghold.

 Cities and nations have strongholds.

 Industries have strongholds.

Steps to Freedom From Strongholds 1. Identify Strongholds and their Symptoms. Rank them from 1(lowest influence) - 10 (greatest) by the level of influence they have. Work with someone close to you to confirm the strongholds. i.e., spouse, close friend. 2. Confess and renounce the influence of strongholds in Jesus’ name. Each believer has the power of the Holy Spirit to renounce the influence of strongholds over their life. We “have divine power to demolish strongholds” -(2 Corinthians 10:4) 3. Meditate and walk according to the Word. Renew your mind.

“Adam and Eve were placed in the garden with a mission. God said, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.’ It was God’s intention that as they bore more children, who also lived under God’s rule, they would be extending the boundaries of His garden (His government) through the simplicity of their devotion to Him. The process was to continue until the entire earth was covered with the glorious rule of God through man.” Bill Johnson, When Heaven Invades Earth , p. 30

“For me the time of activity does not differ from the time of prayer, and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are calling together calling for as many different things, I possess God in as great a different things, I possess God in as great a tranquility as when upon my knees at the tranquility as when upon my knees at the blessed Sacrament.” Practicing the Presence of God , 1600s
