forEword What is the difference between a graphic designer and a “fine artist,” between he who gives highway signs their typeface and she whose canvasses and sculptures live in museums where admission must be paid? In terms of talent, possibly none. The difference is one of intimacy. We gaze up at our favorite paintings, gingerly circumnavigate the greatest sculptures—we literally put them on pedestals. But we hug our favorite books and records, and kiss their covers, and a particular typeface will forever conjure the road-sign at the turnoff to the summer lodge, that last turn that led to nirvana, the last week of August, the summer after tenth grade. I don’t want to meet the artist (the painter, the sculptor, the violin prodigy, the rock star), for if I did, she’d probably disappoint, and if she didn’t, I’d be tongue-tied. But the graphic designer? I want to clasp him to me, and ask how he did it, and say Thank you. No need to invite George Corsillo into your living room and offer him a nip or a puff—he’s been there all along. He’s been in your album crate since the early 1980s, showcasing John and Olivia at their Grease-iest, Luther Vandross at his sultriest, Benatar, Mellencamp, Yoko. In his toolbox, George always brings his analog chops, learned with the legendary book-jacket designer Paul Bacon; nobody has that facility with typeface or silkscreening who grew up only on computers. He brings, too, a party- down fierceness, a willingness to get his hands dirty (on the Grease jacket, those are George’s teeth marks on the pencil), a scavenger’s resourcefulness (the legs on the Tilt cover? his wife, Susan’s), and a tactful deference to the artist, masking, as needed, Vandross’s girth or Benatar’s pregnancy. -

Pronunciation: reduced ing (-in’) Note: Dolly Parton wrote this for the 1980 film of the same name, and won Grammy Awards for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. 1) Ask students what their parents do for a living (or what their ideal profession would be). They discuss the pros and cons of these professions with a partner. Do they know the expression “the Rat Race”? 2) Give each student a copy of the folded worksheet and ask them to write the word under each picture. Key: (the numbers are the order they appear in the song). a) shower – 3, b) bed – 1, c) wait – 7, d) traffic – 4, e) ladder – 6, f) pour – 2, g) wallet – 10, h) 9 to 5 – 5, i) game – 9, j) ship – 8 3) Ask students to match the vocabulary to the correct meaning. Key: 1 – e, 2 – c, 3 – d, 4 – a, 5 – j, 6 – g, 7 – h, 8 – f, 9 – i, 10 – b 4) Ask students to unfold the worksheet. Play the song, they put the lyrics in the correct order. (They may find it easier to cut the page, and to lay the cards out as they hear them. They write a short description then read it aloud to the other teams without saying the job title – the other teams guess what it is. -

National Standards for Arts Education Music – Grades 9-12 Standard 6 – Listening to, analyzing and describing music Standard 7 – Evaluating music and music performances Standard 9 – Understanding music in relation to history and culture Curriculum Extension for English Language Arts Part I of the lesson is offered as an English Language Arts curriculum extension. It addresses general skills in reading, oral communications, and researching. An additional writing activity is included at the conclusion of Part II. Lesson Overview Students will gain an understanding of the career and music of Dolly Parton, by viewing and discussing segments of a documentary about this legendary country music artist. They will learn about the distinctive musical style of Parton and the personal qualities that helped make her a renowned performer. They will analyze and assess the lyrics and music for a song she composed and performed, “9 to 5,” for the film of the same title. Students will enhance their reading and research skills, exploring topics related to the documentary and to the featured song. The lesson is divided in two parts. Part I includes viewing program clips and discussing content relating to Dolly Parton’s career and her music, in particular the song “9 to 5.” Part II includes analyzing and discussing musical elements of the song “9 to 5” and its association to the film of the same title. -

Although the popularity and desirability of blonde hair in the West is well documented, since the 1950s, blonde hair has also generated many negative associations and these have contributed to myths around blondeness. In particular, women who dye their hair blonde find themselves in a paradoxical position; they simultaneously evoke desire and derision. This thesis uses the model of feminine masquerade outlined by Joan Riviere (1929) as a locus for discussing the transgressive potential of the knowing use of blondeness as a sign. When women wear blondeness in this way they embrace it as an oblique means to access privilege. This self-reflexivity allows women to enter sites of power that they are otherwise excluded from. Drawing on ideas of the carnivalesque, as described by Mikhail Bakhtin (1968), this thesis also proposes that the carnivalesque is employed by women in order to transgress patriarchal boundaries through an ironic masquerade of the archetypal blonde. -
