Niño, Guiuan, Eastern Samar, 3Environmental Bureau Region 8, DENR Compound, Jones St., Brgy. 2, Tacloban City, Leyte ABSTRACT Decatopecten radula is highly sought for its shell meat making it as a source of food and income for local shellfish gatherers in Guiuan, Eastern Samar. This study provides biological information for future conservation and management. Data were obtained monthly in the three selected sites within coastal waters of Guiuan, Eastern Samar from January 2016 to December 2016. These scallops were distributed at shallow areas of Trinidad Tubabao Island, Kamandag Reef, and Magluto Reef in depths of approximately 1-5 meters throughout the sampling period. Scallops are abundant in Kamandag reef where the site is characterized by its rocky area and mainly composed of a sandy bottom. Scallops were found on the surface of the sediment, attached to rocks or hard elements, hidden in a seagrass and seaweed. Physico-chemical parameters were observed within a narrow and normal range. Water temperature did not vary widely from 28°C to 30°C while salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen ranged from 33-34, 8.2-8.7, and 3.4–4.8 mg/L respectively. The results from the 825 scallops showed that D. radula is dioecious species with four gonad stages (developing, mature, spawning, spent) based on the histological examination and calculation of gonadosomatic index (GSI). The spawning period of the species is protracted and spawning peaks occur from August to November with a male-female sex ratio of 1:1.24. Size at sexual maturity reached 55 mm shell height (SH) in males and 60 mm SH in females. For this reason, it was chosen as the study area in Eastern Visayas under the National Stock Assessment Program (NSAP) which aims to assess the status of fisheries resources. This paper presents the fishery stock assessment results from CY 2001-2011. The annual fish catch from 2001-2011 showed a declining trend. The lowest was in 2008 with 12, 483.52 MT while the highest was in 2003 with 26,367.32 MT. The municipal fisheries had a high catch contribution except in 2001 where commercial catch was higher by 30%. Thirty eight (38) types of fishing gears were identified operating in Leyte Gulf.

This study assessed the status of reefs in 12 municipalities of Leyte Gulf, Philippines. It is an important fishing ground experiencing degradation and impacts of super- typhoons—the strongest one was Haiyan (local name: Yolanda). Empirical and literature data were used to develop Ecopath (trophic) models and Ecosim simulations to evaluate the impacts of reduction and increase in productivity on the Leyte Gulf Reef (LGR) ecosystem. Results showed that the LGR’s ecosystem is in a degraded state—dominated by small-medium herbivores and carnivores, with most productivity immediately returned to detritus. In addition, a comparative study of two Ecopath models showed that reduction in the coral cover (e.g., by Super-Typhoon Haiyan) will result in a decline in biomass of many functional groups. Changes in LGR’s productivity (e.g., eutrophication) will also strongly impact most functional groups (e.g., shift to overdominance of herbivores that take advantage of algal growth and extirpation of coral reef-dependent species). Moreover, additional climate-related or human-induced disturbances on the degraded LGR will further decrease the reef’s productivity. Therefore, effective recovery and management of degraded reef ecosystems is needed to sustain the LGR’s productivity (e.g., reef fisheries production).

But there were more cogent arguments against : MacArthur's that the United States was in honou r bound to liberate the Philippines, and his offer to free Luzon two month s after Leyte with the troops to be employed in this last-named ; and the apprehension that casualties in an attack on Formosa might reach a pro- hibitive figure. Most forceful consideration was that the American Arm y would not be able to provide the necessary forces for the Formosa attac k until three months after Germany had surrendered . At an informal con- ference in San Francisco at the end of September between Nimitz an d Sherman, the Senior Army and Air Force Commanders in Nimitz's Pacifi c Ocean areas and Admiral King, the Admiral was persuaded that Luzon, not Formosa, should be next on the list .
