One is migration; the other is translation. As disciplines, neither migration studies nor translation studies belong to the field of literary studies in their own right. Migration has for many years been a field within social and cultural studies and is now acquiring increasing urgency in today’s geopolitical context. But with the rapidly growing number of works representing various experiences of migration, it has also irrevocably entered literary studies. Likewise, as an academic discipline translation studies was for years a subject host- ed by linguistics before new trends emerged in the 1970s and gained ground in the 1990s with a theoretical perspective to also encompass intermedia translation and a broad register of c-ultural discourses, literature included. With Henry Roth’s Jewish-American migration novel Call It Sleep (1934) as my basic text, I will explore the world literature perspective of migration and translation. Likewise, as an academic discipline translation studies was for years a subject host- ed by linguistics before new trends emerged in the 1970s and gained ground in the 1990s with a theoretical perspective to also encompass intermedia translation and a broad register of cultural discourses, literature included.1 Of course, practicing translators have always worked with literature but not as a field of research. 1 See Lefevere and Bassnett. Volume 1 Number 2 2016 1 比较文学与世界文学(第2期)-内文.indd 1 2016/12/8 10:34:20 These recent developments have made migration studies and translation studies ripe for literary scholars working in a world literature perspective.2 They have added a political awareness, in as much as both migra- tion and translation involves power relations, the power of place, and the power of meaning production. More- over, they have added a much needed theoretical and contextual ramification to literary studies, which has been mainly closed in on itself since its emergence in Europe as an academic research field around 1800. This inward gaze turned in two directions; firstly, towards the aesthetic particularities of literature. From the mid-eighteenth century, with the aesthetic theories of Ephraim Lessing and Alexander Baumgarten in particular, literature was singled out as a quasi-autonomous object of study. The broader cultural outlook, typical of the Renaissance and also the Enlightenment in general, became more and more myopic. Secondly, literary studies tended to look to- wards the national characteristics of literature. Such features were believed to constitute the immanent essence of literature (and other art forms as well) with a whole panoply of ideological implications ranging from nationalism bordering on fascism to a self-conscious minority awareness.3 Among both writers and critics the effect was that the preoccupation with a shared European literary history beyond the boundaries of national languages and territories withered away. At the same time, com- parative perspectives with the potential of opening or re-opening the larger cultural and linguistic context only came second, mainly considered to consist of comparisons between authors, works or entire literatures with an already established and primary national definition.4 Consequently, the emerging interest in world literature, as it occurred with Johan Wolfgang von Goethe’s critical ideas and poetical practice in the 1820s as the most widespread inspiration, took on an idealistic aspect relying on immanent literary values cast in trans-historical and universalist terms. In contrast, the revival of world literature today consists in breaking away from this inward-looking idealistic take on world literature and, in particular, from the fervent cultivation of national literatures and its package of ideological implications. Of course, today’s world literature studies have also utilized the many and varied critical methodologies that have developed from the founding years of literary studies. Yet, more importantly, the reorientation of literary studies meant a keen receptiveness to other continents, other languages, other types of local cultural formations, other genres, other themes – where ‘other’ always means other than the physical and colonial boundaries of European culture and the national thinking that underpins it. However, given the century-long global impact of Europe, this so-called provincializing of Europe (Chakrabarty 2007) always unfolds in a dialogue with the undeniable influence of European culture around the world, both in academia and in culture at large. Literary studies as a discipline is also involved directly in the power relations as they are articulated by migration

    S S READING OUR WAY TO DEMOCRACY? LITERATURE AND PUBLIC ETHICS ,” F K, “that we should only read those “I books that bite and sting us. If a book we are reading does not rouse us with a blow to the head, then why read it?” 1 Almost all of us who read books for a living and/or pleasure have undoubtedly expe- rienced that most delightfully troubling of phenomena: a novel that forces us to think differently about the world and the way that we live. In recent years, literature’s capacity to generate in its readers “a rigorous scrutiny of everything they believe in and live by” 2—what Stanley Fish calls its “dialectical” potential—has drawn the attention of a number of liberal-democratic theorists, most notably Martha Nussbaum and Rich- ard Rorty. By “liberal-democratic” is meant here, of course, that system of government with popular rule, regular elections, a commitment to individual rights and the rule of law; one that draws on a tradition of political thought that includes the work of John Locke, John Stuart Mill and John Rawls. Although their exact formulations of the claim differ in important ways, Nussbaum and Rorty are united in the belief that reading can enhance the practice of liberal-democracy by expanding the moral imaginations of a citizenry. Such an expansion will, they believe, promote the values of tolerance, respect for other viewpoints, and a recognition of the contingency of one’s own perspective, in short, the values of civil society. Whilst there is undoubtedly something intuitively appealing about their claim, there is much that is philosophically and politically problematic about their respective formulations of it.

References that we have uncovered —almost always theses and dissertations —that were not available even through interlibrary loan, have not been included. On the other hand, citations from past years that were missed in earlier bibliographies appear in this one so long as they are accessible. Those who would like to examine earlier bibliographies may now access them full-text, starting in 2007, in Laurentian University’s Institutional Repository in the Library and Archives section . The current bibliography has been embargoed until the next edition is available. Of course, members of the Society may access all available versions of the Bibliography on the Society’s website since all issues of the Margaret Atwood Studies Journal appear there. Users will also note a significant number of links to the full-text of items referenced here and all are active and have been tested on 1 August 2017.     Les Drapeaux des Langues Construites Patrice de La Condamine Résumé Depuis toujours, les hommes oscillent entre la préservation de leurs identités particulières et leur besoin d’appartenance à des communautés globales. L’idée d’universel et de recherche de la “fusion des origines” hante leur cœur. Dans cet esprit, des langues construites ont été élaborées. Qu’elles soient à vocation auxiliaire ou internationale, destinées à de vastes aires culturelles ou à but strictement philosophique. Des noms connus comme Volapük, Espéranto, Ido, Bolak, Interlingua, Occidental. Mais aussi Glosa, Kotava, Lingua Franca Nova, Atlango. Ou encore Folskpraat, Slovio, Nordien, Afrihili, Slovianski, Hedšdël. Sans parler du langage philosophique Lojban1. Le plus intéressant est de constater que toutes ces langues ont des drapeaux qui traduisent les messages et idéaux des groupes en question! La connaissance des drapeaux des langues construites est primordiale pour plusieurs raisons: elle nous permet de comprendre que tous les drapeaux sans exception délivrent des messages d’une part; que l’existence des drapeaux n’est pas forcément liée à l’unique notion de territoire d’autre part. Le drapeau est d’abord et avant tout, à travers son dessin et ses couleurs, un “territoire mental”. Après avoir montré et expliqué ces différents drapeaux2, nous conclurons avec la présentation du drapeau des Conlang, sorte d’ONU des Langues construites!     1 EthoGloso Rules P R O N O U N C I A T I O N If you speak Esperanto, respecting the set of rules of the following pages, adapting its spelling and pronunciation, will make you speak EthoGloso „automatically‟. Its basic vocabulary is the same and all additional words of EthoGloso, with their roots in Latin and Greek, are not necessary for routine daily conversations. EthoGloso uses only the 26 regular English letters of the regular English keyboard. EthoGloso, contrary to Esperanto and most national languages, does not use diacritics (accentuated letters, vowel or consonant) These first two rules alone condition de development of all the other EthoGloso rules, as in EthoGloso there is no such things as, for example, an accented “c” [ĉ, for sound “TCHE”] or an accented “j” [ĵ, for sound “J” of French “Je”], or an accented “g” [“ĝ”, for sound “DJE” of “Jesuit”], or an accented “s” [ŝ, for the sound “SH” of “SHe”, which is the simple “C” in EthoGloso]. All these oddly accented consonants, with similar examples with some vowels, only exist in Esperanto, which is unfortunate, but not in EthoGloso. When the sound of these accented letters do exist in EthoGloso, it requires a spelling adjustment to use only, in the end, the 26 regular letters of the normal English keyboard for writing in EthoGloso. Having done these adjustments, each written letter is always pronounced, and always pronounced in the same way. Everything is strictly written as pronounced, and strictly pronounced as written, without exception. The unpronounced letters of foreign words are simply not written in EthoGloso.

    From Onegin to Ada: Nabokov’s Canon and the Texture of Time Marijeta Bozovic Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 2011 Marijeta Bozovic all rights reserved ABSTRACT From Onegin to Ada: Nabokov’s Canon and the Texture of Time Marijeta Bozovic The library of existing scholarship on Vladimir Nabokov circles uncomfortably around his annotated translation Eugene Onegin (1964) and late English-language novel Ada, or Ardor (1969). This dissertation juxtaposes Pushkin’s Evgenii Onegin (1825-32) with Nabokov’s two most controversial monuments and investigates Nabokov’s ambitions to enter a canon of Western masterpieces, re-imagined with Russian literature as a central strain. I interrogate the implied trajectory for Russian belles lettres, culminating unexpectedly in a novel written in English and after fifty years of emigration. My subject is Nabokov, but I use this hermetic author to raise broader questions of cultural borrowing, transnational literatures, and struggles with rival canons and media. Chapter One examines Pushkin’s Evgenii Onegin, the foundation stone of the Russian canon and a meta-literary fable. Untimely characters pursue one another and the latest Paris and London fashions in a text that performs and portrays anxieties of cultural borrowing and Russia’s position vis-à-vis the West. Fears of marginalization are often expressed in terms of time: I use Pascale Casanova’s World Republic of Letters to suggest a global context for the “belated” provinces and fashion-setting centers of cultural capital. Chapter Two argues that Nabokov’s Eugene Onegin, three-quarters provocation to one-quarter translation, focuses on the Russian poet and his European sources.
