En su Guía del dilatada obra tuvieron cabida esencial muchos Madrid escenarios y asuntos madrileños. Apasionado de la historia, de la mano de su antepasado, el conspirador Eugenio de Aviraneta, se asomó también al Madrid del XIX, teatro de muchas de las vicisitudes que estremecie- ron a España. Todo esto se recoge en esta Guía, abundante en textos del autor, de quien reencuentra muchos espacios en la ciudad, y sintoniza con el novelista en la reviviscencia de las criaturas por él alumbradas, siempre con la valiosa ayuda de una rica ilustración. La obra incorpora además candentes cuestiones didácticas y sugiere itinerarios barojianos por Madrid y su provincia, que también halla cum- GUÍAS CULTURALES plido reflejo en estas páginas. Miguel García-Posada es Doctor en Filología Hispánica por la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid y asesor técnico de la Consejería de Educación de la Comunidad de Madrid. Ha publi- barojiano del Madrid Guía cado más de una treintena de libros de crítica literaria, así como cerca de dos mil artículos en la prensa ordinaria y especializada, GUÍA DEL MADRID BAROJIANO cuenta en su haber con varios títulos de creación, y ha dedicado varias obras a la didáctica de la literatura, entre ellas la Guía del Madrid galdosiano, publicada en esta misma colección. -

Questioning its historicity, contemporary scholars of nineteenth-century literature often stress the creativity of groups. William St. Clair, Sharon Lynne Feedback Joffe, Scott Krawczyk and Julie A. Carlson have examined the productivity of Romantic literary families or kinship coteries. Tim Fulford, Peter J. Kitson, and Debbie Lee have revealed the scientific network as an engine of Romantic cultural production. David Higgins has shown how the concept of Romantic genius was shaped and popularized by the periodicals of the era, which influenced such figures as Wordsworth and the painter Benjamin R. Haydon. And creative groups could be as small as two. Refashioning the Sociopolitical in Spanish Modernist Literature (1902-1914) By Ricardo Lopez A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Romance Languages and Literatures and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Dru Dougherty, Chair Professor Ivonne del Valle Professor Robert Kaufman Fall 2015 Abstract Refashioning the Sociopolitical in Spanish Modernist Literature (1902-1914) by Ricardo Lopez Doctor of Philosophy in Romance Languages and Literatures with a Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Dru Dougherty, Chair In this dissertation I argue that the modernist breakthroughs achieved by José Martínez Ruiz’s La voluntad (1902), Ramón del Valle-Inclán’s Sonata de otoño (1902), and Miguel de Unamuno’s Niebla (1914) emerged as a response to the shortsightedness of the revolutionary politics that had taken root in Restoration Spain. I examine how these writers take the historical materials of their sociopolitical world—its tropes and uses of language—and reconstellate them as artworks in which the familiar becomes estranged and reveals truths that have been obscured by the ideological myopia of Spain’s radicalized intellectuals. Accordingly, I demonstrate that the tropes, language, and images that constitute La voluntad, Niebla, and Sonata de otoño have within them a historical sediment that turns these seemingly apolitical works into an “afterimage” of Spain’s sociopolitical reality. Thus I show how sociopolitical critiques materialize out of the dialectic between historical materials and their artistic handling. Although La voluntad, Sonata de otoño, and Niebla seem to eschew political themes, I contend that they are the product of their authors’ keen understanding of the politics of their moment. -

S S READING OUR WAY TO DEMOCRACY? LITERATURE AND PUBLIC ETHICS ,” F K, “that we should only read those “I books that bite and sting us. If a book we are reading does not rouse us with a blow to the head, then why read it?” 1 Almost all of us who read books for a living and/or pleasure have undoubtedly expe- rienced that most delightfully troubling of phenomena: a novel that forces us to think differently about the world and the way that we live. In recent years, literature’s capacity to generate in its readers “a rigorous scrutiny of everything they believe in and live by” 2—what Stanley Fish calls its “dialectical” potential—has drawn the attention of a number of liberal-democratic theorists, most notably Martha Nussbaum and Rich- ard Rorty. By “liberal-democratic” is meant here, of course, that system of government with popular rule, regular elections, a commitment to individual rights and the rule of law; one that draws on a tradition of political thought that includes the work of John Locke, John Stuart Mill and John Rawls. Although their exact formulations of the claim differ in important ways, Nussbaum and Rorty are united in the belief that reading can enhance the practice of liberal-democracy by expanding the moral imaginations of a citizenry. Such an expansion will, they believe, promote the values of tolerance, respect for other viewpoints, and a recognition of the contingency of one’s own perspective, in short, the values of civil society. Whilst there is undoubtedly something intuitively appealing about their claim, there is much that is philosophically and politically problematic about their respective formulations of it. -

References that we have uncovered —almost always theses and dissertations —that were not available even through interlibrary loan, have not been included. On the other hand, citations from past years that were missed in earlier bibliographies appear in this one so long as they are accessible. Those who would like to examine earlier bibliographies may now access them full-text, starting in 2007, in Laurentian University’s Institutional Repository in the Library and Archives section . The current bibliography has been embargoed until the next edition is available. Of course, members of the Society may access all available versions of the Bibliography on the Society’s website since all issues of the Margaret Atwood Studies Journal appear there. Users will also note a significant number of links to the full-text of items referenced here and all are active and have been tested on 1 August 2017. That said—and particularly in the case of Atwood’s commentary and opinion pieces —the bibliography also reproduces much (if not all) of what is available on-line, since what is accessible now may not be obtainable in the future. And as in the 2015 Bibliography, there has been a change in editing practice —instead of copying and pasting authors’ abstracts, we have modified some to ensure greater clarity. Sobre un grabado y una novela de los hermanos Baroja Juan Antonio Chavarría Vargas e Isaac Rodríguez Resumen Este trabajo es fruto de una investigación minuciosa que trata de poner en evidencia la relación de hermandad que existe entre dos grandes obras artísticas, una novela de Pío Baroja (La dama errante) y un grabado de su hermano Ricardo (Baile de las castañeras en Nª Srª de Chilla). Por los detalles coincidentes entre ambas y por la seguridad de que las dos tienen la misma fuente de inspiración –un baile nocturno contemplado por los dos hermanos, cerca de Candeleda, en el viaje que realizaron, junto con Ciro Bayo, en el otoño de 1906 por tierras de Ávila–, es segura la relación directa que las une. El artículo hace especial hincapié en el análisis pormenorizado del aguafuerte de don Ricardo Baroja que da título a estas páginas, grabado muy poco conocido y deficientemente estudiado hasta la fecha en relación con el viaje que por el Tiétar abulense y la Vera extremeña realizaron los tres andariegos noventayochistas. Abstract This work is the result of an exhaustive investigation that aims to evidence the brotherhood relationship that exists between two great artistic oeuvres, a novel by Pío Baroja (La dama errante) and a gravure from his brother Ricardo (Baile de las castañeras en Nª Srª de Chilla). Given the coincidental details between them and the corroborated fact that both works come from the same inspiration source -a nocturnal dance that the two brothers witnessed, near Candeleda, during a trip they took along with Ciro Bayo, in the Fall of 1906 through the Avila region- it is confirmed the direct relation that links them. -

From Onegin to Ada: Nabokov’s Canon and the Texture of Time Marijeta Bozovic Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 2011 Marijeta Bozovic all rights reserved ABSTRACT From Onegin to Ada: Nabokov’s Canon and the Texture of Time Marijeta Bozovic The library of existing scholarship on Vladimir Nabokov circles uncomfortably around his annotated translation Eugene Onegin (1964) and late English-language novel Ada, or Ardor (1969). This dissertation juxtaposes Pushkin’s Evgenii Onegin (1825-32) with Nabokov’s two most controversial monuments and investigates Nabokov’s ambitions to enter a canon of Western masterpieces, re-imagined with Russian literature as a central strain. I interrogate the implied trajectory for Russian belles lettres, culminating unexpectedly in a novel written in English and after fifty years of emigration. My subject is Nabokov, but I use this hermetic author to raise broader questions of cultural borrowing, transnational literatures, and struggles with rival canons and media. Chapter One examines Pushkin’s Evgenii Onegin, the foundation stone of the Russian canon and a meta-literary fable. Untimely characters pursue one another and the latest Paris and London fashions in a text that performs and portrays anxieties of cultural borrowing and Russia’s position vis-à-vis the West. Fears of marginalization are often expressed in terms of time: I use Pascale Casanova’s World Republic of Letters to suggest a global context for the “belated” provinces and fashion-setting centers of cultural capital. Chapter Two argues that Nabokov’s Eugene Onegin, three-quarters provocation to one-quarter translation, focuses on the Russian poet and his European sources. -

Queremos expresarnos en castellano, en euskera y en francés porque la genealogía vasca se ha enlazado a lo largo de los tiempos con estas tres lenguas. En los números siguientes esperamos poder contar con artículos en cualquiera de ellas. Iniciamos también un tema que con toda probabilidad tendrá continuidad. Trataremos de seguir la pista de aquellos vascos que salieron de su tierra y se asentaron en otras pero al hacerlo llevaron consigo palabras, modos de trabajar o de vivir que, gracias a ellos, perduran en muchos sitios. Examinamos en esta ocasión las contribuciones que algunos vascos de Iparralde llevaron a cabo en Canadá. Pero también contamos con la mirada del descendiente de uno de aquellos vascos a quien la genealogía descubre lugares desconocidos y hoy tan queridos. Como dijimos en el primer número, es importante para nosotros clarificar conceptos. -

DOS TESTIMONIOS HISTORICOS Y FAMILIARES 1 . — LA VIDA EN LA MINA (RÍO TINTO ENTRE 1868 Y 1871) I y AS Minas de Rio Tinto, explotadas desde época remotísima, han tenido en los tiempos modernos una historia accidentada y hasta cierto punto contraria a los intereses generales de España. Pasaron así varias veces, del Estado a compañías y de compañías al Estado, sin rendir lo que debieran. Ya en 1725 se arrendaron; en 1782 volvió el gobierno español a labrarlas por su cuenta, de modo no muy satisfactorio, paralizándose casi las tareas durante la guerra de la Independencia... Mal se volvieron a explotar en tiem• pos de Fernando VII y contra la opinión de muchos y en vista de los escasos resultados obtenidos, se arrendaron, otra vez, por veinte años, desde 1829 a 1849 y por la suma de 260.000 reales anuales en los diez primeros y 310.000 en los restantes. El Marqués de Remisa llevó adelante la explotación como director de una empresa, que no fue muy aficionado a dar informaciones acerca de lo que le rindie• ron las minas, según se lee en el Diccionario de Madoz ^. Después, se hicieron otra vez unos arriendos desbarajustados, dándose una especie de triple alianza entre la Hacienda y dos empresas consti• tuidas por algunos personajes harto equívocos. Esta situación duró hasta 1862. Desde 1862 a 1872 fue el Estado el que explotó las mi• nas. .., pero en 25 de junio de 1870 ya se había acordado la venta de las mismas, nombrándose una comisión para que las tasara. Esta comisión tasó, en efecto, minas, más muebles e inmuebles, en 104.357.769 pesetas con 44 céntimos.
