Williams © 2018 Elijah Heyward, III ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Elijah Heyward, III: Between Prayer and Protest: Gullah Identity in the Aftermath of the Charleston Shooting (Under the direction of Glenn Hinson) “Between Prayer and Protest: Contemporary Gullah Identity in the Aftermath of the Charleston Shooting” explores contemporary Gullah identities through the lens of the horrific shooting at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Coverage of the event highlighted the prayers and forgiveness by Mother Emanuel’s members, with little attention paid to the cultural context of Charleston’s Gullah population. Through a critical exploration of Gullah spirituality, Gullah familial networks, and Gullah expressive culture, my project endeavors to complicate the narratives so often told about Gullah people, by exploring the often overlooked role of subversion and agency that has historically sustained the community. My fieldwork in the Gullah diaspora is complemented by a historical investigation of how Gullah identities were crafted by cultural outsiders. Gullah consciousness guides and informs Gullah community life. Through interviews with Gullah natives, my dissertation interrogates the commodification of Gullah identity, while exploring how Gullah people reclaim and wrestle with the imminent impacts of migration and economic barriers in the 21st century. The work of counter-curators explicitly and implicitly encourages a re- examination of what it means to be Gullah, and invites us to explore Gullah identity in provocative and nuanced ways. Artist like Charmaine Bee and Sheldon Scott explicitly challenge historical tropes through their multi-media art projects that explore racial violence, gender and sexuality, and Gullah futures. The implicit work rests in the everydayness of Gullah traditions that, when explored beyond the surface, highlight the dynamism of cultural practice that transcends outsider representations. For iii instance, the intentionality around godparenting in the Gullah context persists as an example of the Gullah community’s singular commitment to child rearing and the transmission of values. This exploration takes readers beyond the South Carolina Lowcountry, to a discussion of the ways that Gullah values are creatively employed by Gullah people within a broader diaspora. This diaspora, which I refer to as the Gullah diaspora, functions as a literal and theoretical framework for engaging evolving notions of community. iv To Cynthia Hurd, Suzie Jackson, Ethel Lance, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Rev. Educators from all walks of life encouraged a shy young man who felt isolated to find his voice and place in the world through service. I especially want to thank Mr. Daniels for being my math tutor from the 6th grade to college. He transformed my fear of Geometry into one of my greatest passions; Mrs. Faulkner and Mrs. Mann for their early and sustained influence; Mrs. Clarke, Mr. DC Mahaga Campbell, and Mrs. Lyle for supporting my journey to college; and Mr. Drake and Mr. Ulmer for granting, and mentoring me through, one of the most important leadership opportunities and dreams of my teenage years. My scholarly journey is only possible through the example of scholars who have influenced my life. These scholars range from the writers and thinkers who populated my parents’ fireplace book collection, and the many elders who allowed me to sit at their feet. My earliest memories are of attending class with my mother at South Carolina State College, a memory that continues to inspire my deep passion for the power of public education. My parents also exposed me to the work of Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, and Dr. John Hope Franklin, whose painting I often worked under during vi late night writing sessions at Duke University. These early influences ignited my passion for history and social justice. My early appreciation for the arts was nurtured through phenomenal instructors, most recently Thomas S. Rankin, Bill Bamberger and my colleagues Jon-Sesrie Goff and Madeleine Hunt Ehrlich. Thank you Jon and Madeline for your brilliance and artistry that make me a deeper thinker and better photographer and artist. I am also grateful for the artistry and engagement of Mr. Jonathan Green, Ms. Charmaine Bee, and Mr. Sheldon Scott. The artists featured here did not know each other, and they differ in race, age, gender, and cultural background. They lived in rural and urban areas, in different parts of the United States. However, each artist communicated compelling ideas through powerful imagery. Each had a unique artistic voice that speaks to us directly, confidently, and poetically. Inventive and determined, each of these artists took everyday materials—often those that others discarded—and created remarkable works of art. This resource was developed for K–12 classroom teachers to use with their students before, after, or instead of a visit to the exhibition.

    Race, gender and class in the autobiography of Huey P. 1 Newton Chloé Avril, University of Gothenburg “We’ll just have to get guns and be men”, such was the powerful rallying cry uttered by Black Panther member (and later leader) Elaine Brown in her 1969 song “The End of Silence”. I take Brown’s words as the point of departure for my article, since they seem to encapsulate much of what is at stake in relation to gender and the Black Power movement. Brown’s call to arms in “The End of Silence” immediately poses the question of the significance as well as the function of masculinity in the movement. It also highlights the link between masculinity and armed resistance. However, the use of the verb “to be” signals that “men” are the product of an action—getting guns—rather than a pre-existing subject performing the action, thus putting into question the automatic correlation between masculinity and the male body, a feeling reinforced by the words being uttered by the female voice of Elaine Brown. The contradictions and problematic aspects of the Black Power movement’s invocation of black masculinity, as well as the intersections of race, gender and class, will be at the core of this discussion. In order to explore these issues, I will focus on the autobiography of Black Panther leader Huey Newton, Revolutionary Suicide , where I will examine the tensions in this activist narrative’s construction of a racialized, classed and gendered self. Historical background As far as mainstream U.S. history goes, the Black Power movement has characteristically been understood as a distinct historical phenomenon following on, and breaking from the more widely accepted Civil Rights movement.

Robert Baker ABSTRACT Enlightenment philosophers had long feared the effects of crisscrossing boundaries, both real and imagined. Such fears were based on what they considered a brutal ocean space frequented by protean shape-shifters with a dogma of ruthless exploitation and profit. This intellectual study outlines the formation and fragmentation of a fluctuating worldview as experienced through the circum-Atlantic life and travels of merchant, slaveowner, and slave trader Zephaniah Kingsley during the Era of Revolution. It argues that the process began from experiencing the costs of loyalty to the idea of the British Crown and was tempered by the pervasiveness of violence, mobility, anxiety, and adaptation found in the booming Atlantic markets of the Caribbean during the Haitian Revolution.

    The Denmark Vesey Conspiracy Conceptualizing Crime and Religion in Slaveholding Societies Paul Schneider-Krumpus This project was supported by the University of Minnesota Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Premise of Research Through the UROP program, I have conducted an historical documentary analysis of the Denmark Vesey conspiracy, an alleged plot of slave rebellion that was exposed in Charleston, South Carolina in 1822. This research is meant to be part of Professor Katherine Gerbner’s wider research on the construction of religion and crime in relation to New World slavery. Little documentation of the alleged plot exists outside of court documents from the trials of the accused, and so these were especially important source materials. New strides are being made in the understanding of the Denmark Vesey conspiracy, as professional historians continue to accumulate sources and construct new and fuller interpretations of the events. Objective of Research The objective of this research was to use primary sources relevant to the Denmark Vesey conspiracy to learn about the relationships between law, religion, and the institution of slavery in the antebellum American South, particularly in relation to slave revolts. Considering the religious nature of the plot, its conspirators, its suppressors, and the very society it took place in, the Denmark Vesey conspiracy is especially suited to an analysis of this sort. Compared to other slave revolts, this plot is only lightly studied. It could be essential to understanding other North American slave revolts though; the number of people involved is alleged to be well over 6,000, which would make it one of the largest uprisings ever conceived of in this part of the world.

    Life on the Sea Islands, 1864 Charlotte Forten Introduction The Civil War began just off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina in April, 1861. By November, the United States Army controlled the South Carolina coast including the Sea Islands, a collection of barrier islands stretching 185 miles. The Guale Indians lived on the Islands for hundreds of years before the Spanish colonized the southeastern coast of North America during the sixteenth century. Mainland South Carolina became a British colony in 1663, and unlike neighboring Virginia, was founded as a slave society. South Carolina had the largest population of enslaved people as a colony and later, a state. In fact, South Carolina still had the largest population of enslaved people when the Civil War broke out in 1861. The Spanish ceded the Sea Islands to the British following the end of the French and Indian War in 1763. The low-tides and fertile soil of the Sea Islands made the them ideal for cultivating rice and sugar, and later, cotton. The rice plantations in the Sea Islands were some of the largest and most lucrative in South. Rice planters were the wealthiest men in America, primarily because enslaved bodies were the most valuable property before the Civil War. Rice plantations relied on hundreds of enslaved people. Several Sea Island plantations had over one thousand enslaved people. Enslaved people on the Sea Islands essentially lived in small towns, where they developed their own distinct identity, culture, and language known as Gullah. The Gullah language was rooted in the Creek language of the Guale Indians, but included elements of Spanish, French, English, African, and Afro-Caribbean languages.
