38 NORTHEASTERN WOMEN’S HOCKEY 2009-10 GoNU.com WOMEN’S BEANPOT WOMEN’S HOCKEY The Women’s Beanpot Tournament began in 1979, with Northeastern bringing home victories in the first two years of the tournament’s existence. After won the title for the first time in 2006 – the first year that all four Boston schools participated as varsity clubs – all four teams have brought home at least one victory in the tournament. The four Boston area teams have taken part in 27 of the 29 Beanpots. In 1993, replaced , while 1994 featured a three- team round-robin in the first round. With a distinct local flavor, the Women’s Beanpot continues to excite as one of the longest-running Jill Toney women’s tournaments in all of college sports. Northeastern has a rich and successful history in the Women’s NU’s Beanpot Beanpot Tournament, as the Huskies kicked off the tourney by winning the inaugural event on March 17, 1979, defeating Boston College Scoring Leaders by a score of 3-1 in the final. The Huskies won 10 of the first 13 Player G-A-P tournaments, and lead all teams with 14 first-place finishes. Shelley Looney, who played for Northeastern from 1990-94, scored the game-winning goal for the in the gold-medal game of the 1998 Olympics in , Japan. It was the first time women’s hockey was contested in the Olym- pics. Looney was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1992-2005. Looney and 12 other Huskies have represent- ed their respective countries on national teams, including six in the Olympic Games.

Most recently in 2006, forward Vicky Sunohara, a three-time Olympian, won a gold medal with Canada while goalie Chanda Gunn won a bronze medal as the backstop for Team USA in Torino, Italy. Also in Torino was sophomore Florence Schelling and junior Julia Marty, who were playing for Switzerland as it posted its highest finish ever (fourth) at the Olympic Games. Shelley Looney played for Team USA in the Olympics in 1998, winning a gold medal, and played for Team USA again in 2002, winning silver. Former Northeastern head coach and player Laura Schuler played for the Canadian National team from 1990-2001, winning a silver medal in the Olympics in 1998 alongside Sunohara.

The Millis, Mass. native was hired as NU’s first-ever strength coach in 1992 and since has molded countless varsity athletes into the best shape of their lives. St. Cyr has done extensive work at Clemson Joel St. Cyr University and with the New England Patriots.
