  • Length-Weight Relationship and Condition Factor of Seven Fish Species from Shahrbijar River, Southern Caspian Sea Basin, Iran
Iranian Journal of Fisheries Sciences 16(2) 733-741 2017 Length-weight relationship and condition factor of seven fish species from Shahrbijar River, Southern Caspian Sea basin, Iran Asadi H.1*; Sattari M.1; Motalebi Y.2; Zamani-Faradonbeh M.3; Gheytasi A.4 Abstract Length-weight relationship and condition factor were estimated in seven fish species, including Barbus cyri, Capoeta gracilis, Alburnoides eichwaldii, Pseudorasbora parva, Ponticola cyrius, Cobitis keyvani and Acanthalburnus microlepis from Shahrbijar River, Guilan Province, Iran. A total of 416 specimens ranging from 18 to 135 mm in total length and from 0.06 to 19.25 g in total weight were collected. Based on the results, growth coefficient values “b” ranged from 2.615 (in B. cyri) through 3.001 (in A. microlepis). All length-weight relationships were significant (p<0.05), with r2 higher than 0.819. The five species viz. C. gracilis, P. parva, C.keyvani, P. cyrius, and B. cyri showed allometric (b<3<b) while two species viz. A. microlepis and A. eichwaldii showed isometric (b=3) growth patterns. Condition factor ranged from 0.57 (in C.keyvani) through 1.11 (in P.cyrius). All linear regressions were highly significant (p<0.05). The present study provides the first baseline information on the length - weight relationships of the seven fish species from Shahrbijar River which may be useful for further fisheries management of these species. Since the work of J.J. Heckel (1846-1849), the number of valid species has increased significantly and the systematic status of many of the species has changed, and reorganization and updating of the published information has become essential. Here we take the opportunity to provide a new and updated checklist of freshwater fishes of Iran based on literature and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history and new fish collections. This article lists 288 species in 107 genera, 28 families, 22 orders and 3 classes reported from different Iranian basins. However, presence of 23 reported species in Iranian waters needs confirmation by specimens.

  • Scale Deformities in Three Species of the Genus Garra (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae)
Scale deformities in three species of the genus Garra (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae) Halimeh Zareian1,2, Hamid Reza Esmaeili1, Ali Gholamhosseini1* 1. Developmental Biosystematics Research Laboratory, Zoology Section, Department of Biology, School of Science, Shiraz University, Shiraz, Iran 2. Zand Institute of Higher Education, Shiraz, Iran *Corresponding author’s E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Different types of scale deformities have been reported from fishes worldwide, however there is no available study on the abnormal scales in the genus Garra except for G. variabilis. In the present study, scale deformities of three species of Garra including G. rufa, G. persica and Garra sp. from 6 sites of the Iranian drainages were examined and described. Different deformations were observed in focus, anterior, posterior and lateral sides of scales in the studied species, showing both slight and severe abnormalities. The occurrence of twin scales was one of the most interesting cases among various types of scale deformities observed on G. persica and Garra sp. Genetic disorders, diseases (including infection and lesions), developmental anomalies, incomplete regeneration after wounding, physical, and chemical environmental variables including pollutions might be considered as potential factors for scale abnormalities remained to be investigated. Received: 3 May 2016 | Revised: 8 August 2016 | Accepted: 9 August 2016 DOI: 10.1002/ece3.2411 ORIGINAL RESEARCH Phylogenetic relationships of freshwater fishes of the genus Capoeta (Actinopterygii, Cyprinidae) in Iran Hamid Reza Ghanavi | Elena G. Email: [email protected] General Mixed Yule- Coalescent (GMYC) and Poisson Tree Process (PTP) as well as haplotype network analyses. Using the BEAST program, we also examined temporal divergence patterns of Capoeta. The monophyly of the genus and the existence of three previously described main clades (Mesopotamian, Anatolian- Iranian, and Aralo- Caspian) were confirmed. However, the phylogeny proposed novel taxonomic findings within Capoeta. Results of GMYC, bPTP, and phylogenetic analyses were similar and suggested that species diversity in Iran is currently underestimated. At least four can- didate species, Capoeta sp4, Capoeta sp5, Capoeta sp6, and Capoeta sp7, are awaiting description. Capoeta capoeta comprises a species complex with distinct genetic line- ages. The divergence times of the three main Capoeta clades are estimated to have occurred around 15.6–12.4 Mya, consistent with a Mio- Pleistocene origin of the di- versity of Capoeta in Iran. The changes in Caspian Sea levels associated with climate fluctuations and geomorphological events such as the uplift of the Zagros and Alborz Mountains may account for the complex speciation patterns in Capoeta in Iran.

Corresponding author: *E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The genus Capoeta in Iran is highly diversified with 14 species and is one of the most important freshwater fauna components of the country. Central Iran is a region with high number of endemism in other freshwater fish species, though the present species was recognized as C. aculeata (Valenciennes, 1844), widely distributed within Kavir and Namak basins. However previous phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies found that populations of Nam River, a tributary of the Hableh River in central Iran are different from the other species. In this study, the mentioned population is described as a new species based on morphologic and genetic characters. Keywords: Inland freshwater of Iran, Nam River, Algae-scraping cyprinid, Capoeta. • Individual Variation in Rod Absorbance Spectra Correlated with Opsin Gene Polymorphism in Sand Goby (Pomatoschistus Minutus)
3415 The Journal of Experimental Biology 212, 3415-3421 Published by The Company of Biologists 2009 doi:10.1242/jeb.031344 Individual variation in rod absorbance spectra correlated with opsin gene polymorphism in sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus) Mirka Jokela-Määttä1,*, Annika Vartio1, Lars Paulin2 and Kristian Donner1 1Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and 2Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland *Author for correspondence ([email protected]) Accepted 28 July 2009 SUMMARY Rod absorbance spectra, characterized by the wavelength of peak absorbance (max) were related to the rod opsin sequences of individual sand gobies (Pomatoschistus minutus) from four allopatric populations [Adriatic Sea (A), English Channel (E), Swedish West Coast (S) and Baltic Sea (B)]. Rod max differed between populations in a manner correlated with differences in the spectral light transmission of the respective water bodies [max: (A)Ϸ503 nm; (E and S)Ϸ505–506 nm; (B)Ϸ508 nm]. A distinguishing feature of B was the wide within-population variation of max (505.6–511.3 nm). The rod opsin gene was sequenced in marked individuals whose rod absorbance spectra had been accurately measured. Substitutions were identified using EMBL/GenBank X62405 English sand goby sequence as reference and interpreted using two related rod pigments, the spectrally similar one of the Adriatic P. marmoratus (maxϷ507 nm) and the relatively red-shifted Baltic P. microps (maxϷ515 nm) as outgroups. The opsin sequence of all E individuals was identical to that of the reference, whereas the S and B fish all had the substitution N151N/T or N151T. The B fish showed systematic within-population polymorphism, the sequence of individuals with max at 505.6–507.5 nm were identical to S, but those with max at 509–511.3 nm additionally had F261F/Y.

Mehedi Alam b, Mohammad Mahfujul Haque b,* a Department of Fisheries, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi, Bangladesh b Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Keywords: This study evaluates changes in fish species diversity over time in Hakaluki Haor, an ecologically critical wetland Haor in Bangladesh, and the factors affecting this diversity. Fish species diversity data were collected from fishers using Fish species diversity participatory rural appraisal tools and the change in the fish species diversity was determined using Shannon- Fishers Wiener, Margalef's Richness and Pielou's Evenness indices. Principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted Principal component analysis with a dataset of 150 fishers survey to characterize the major factors responsible for the reduction of fish species Climate change fi Anthropogenic activity diversity. Out of 63 sh species, 83% of them were under the available category in 2008 which decreased to 51% in 2018. Fish species diversity indices for all 12 taxonomic orders in 2008 declined remarkably in 2018. The first PCA (climatic change) responsible for the reduced fish species diversity explained 24.05% of the variance and consisted of erratic rainfall (positive correlation coefficient 0.680), heavy rainfall (À0.544), temperature fluctu- ation (0.561), and beel siltation (0.503). The second PCA was anthropogenic activity, including the use of harmful fishing gear (0.702), application of urea to harvest fish (0.673), drying beels annually (0.531), and overfishing (0.513).
