Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least. -

I got a woman ray charles Continue Born in Albany, Georgia, during the Depression, and blind at the age of seven, Ray Charles Robinson certainly had the deck stacked against him from the start. But, as he himself said, he was not good because he was blind; he was good because he was good at what he did. Influenced by both pop vocal styles crooners like Nat King Cole and the smooth West Coast Blues by Charles Brown, Charles began cutting a rather unsightly (yet interesting) leap of blues and rhythm and blues in New Orleans. But it is the musical passion for travel that will lead to two great highs in his career. In 1959, the singer cemented his gospel and blues influence (which he had already marshaled on cuts like I Got a Woman) for a rave-up called What I Said. The song is widely regarded now as the first soul hit record, challenging yet sensual, relentlessly secular yet burning with religious fervor. In 1962, he cemented his legacy by releasing the album Modern Sounds in the Country and Western Music, which somehow poured soul into the country's Western standards, such as Born To Lose and I Can't Stop Loving You. Perhaps one of the most brilliant interpretive albums ever released, it has done more to integrate contemporary American music than almost any other LP in history. And while he more or less settled into an old chain of level fame after that, he remains an institution for his insistence on holding various forms of music in places that shouldn't have logically worked, but with it, he did. -

Spring 2018, OLLI Cal: Tuesdays, 10-12 “Great Voices; an in-depth look at six iconic rock and r&b singers” Throughout the rich, long arc of popular music there has always existed the great singer, the individual who elevates the great song to another dimension, a place where, as listeners, we are thrilled and inspired for the rest of our lives when we hear their work. This course will cover the lives and careers of six legendary rock and r&b singers from the period 1955-75, five Americans and one Irish singer whose work has embodied American roots music. Although all of them are also known as songwriters and performers, they made their mark as vocalists, who could rock our socks off one minute, while with the next breath cajole the sweetest melodies from the material they so passionately tackled. Taught chronologically, the six classes will be presented as a cultural and musical journey through the amazing lives and work of these artists when they were at the forefront of popular music. The course will do this through several media: lectures, slide shows, photographs, recorded music, film clips and the use of live music. The instructor will play piano, guitar and sing, and will choose appropriate examples from each genre to perform in class. Finally, there are my friends, whose companionship has kept me grounded outside of my research. ii ABSTRACT Atlanta is the cultural hub of the hip hop industry and home to some of the latest and most exciting examples of contemporary Afrofuturism. As the city’s primary musical export, trap generally reads as apolitical; however, modern deployments of Afrofuturism’s operational concepts by artists and producers in the genre illuminate a nuanced politics that is a sign of the times. A commercialized sub-genre of gangsta rap, trap is often overlooked as a source of valid social commentary and political critique, as a gap in hip hop and Afrofuturist scholarship would suggest. -

FRANKLIN LEONARD: In the movie version of my life, I would have flown to L.A. and de-planed as a person re-born. I’d know exactly how to play to my deepest talents and live every moment of every day of my life realizing the creative destiny I was meant for. But real life doesn’t work that way. Very few people actually make huge dramatic changes all at once. In the absence of a script or a director, most of us just muddle through. Life gives us a wake-up call; we course-correct a little, then we drift back. Life slams us again, and we course-correct again, and again and again. And this is what I do. ROHAN GUNATILLAKE: Franklin Leonard is the creative visionary behind The Black List, the now legendary community that unearths and champions the brilliant screenplays that studios overlook. In other words, Franklin helps rescue films that deserve to be made. Without The Black List, we maybe would have never seen some of the most beloved Oscar winners in the last fifteen years including Juno, The King’s Speech, and Slumdog Millionaire. In today’s Meditative Story Franklin reflects on moments in his life when it seems the world is showing him the right path. In a movie, signals like these result in the protagonist completely turning their life around. But Franklin isn’t a character in a movie. And sometimes – perhaps even most of the time – the hero’s journey is messy.
