I Got a Woman Ray Charles I got a woman ray charles Continue Born in Albany, Georgia, during the Depression, and blind at the age of seven, Ray Charles Robinson certainly had the deck stacked against him from the start. But, as he himself said, he was not good because he was blind; he was good because he was good at what he did. Influenced by both pop vocal styles crooners like Nat King Cole and the smooth West Coast Blues by Charles Brown, Charles began cutting a rather unsightly (yet interesting) leap of blues and rhythm and blues in New Orleans. But it is the musical passion for travel that will lead to two great highs in his career. In 1959, the singer cemented his gospel and blues influence (which he had already marshaled on cuts like I Got a Woman) for a rave-up called What I Said. The song is widely regarded now as the first soul hit record, challenging yet sensual, relentlessly secular yet burning with religious fervor. In 1962, he cemented his legacy by releasing the album Modern Sounds in the Country and Western Music, which somehow poured soul into the country's Western standards, such as Born To Lose and I Can't Stop Loving You. Perhaps one of the most brilliant interpretive albums ever released, it has done more to integrate contemporary American music than almost any other LP in history. And while he more or less settled into an old chain of level fame after that, he remains an institution for his insistence on holding various forms of music in places that shouldn't have logically worked, but with it, he did. Although young Ray began to lose his sight at the age of five, shortly after witnessing the drowning of his brother, his final blindness by the age of seven was medical, not traumatic. Most medical experts agree glaucoma was the culprit, although growing up in Charles's time and place, let alone the economic backdrop, no one will ever be able to say for sure. However, his blindness never prevented him from learning to ride a bike, play cards, use stairs, or even fly a plane. Charles just used his other feelings. He judged the distances by sound and learned to sharpen memory. He refused to use a dog with eyes or a cane, although he really needed the help of his personal assistant on tour. Charles, however, seems to believe that his disability is exempt from income tax, a belief that caused him a lot of problems with the IRS. Charles was married twice and had 12 children with ten different women. His first marriage lasted only a year and is not even mentioned in the biographical film Ray. (Actor Jamie Foxx won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Charles. His second marriage, to Della's backing vocalist Beatrice Howard Robinson, lasted 22 years. He was well known for his philandering, presenting himself to the women he loved, pretending to be more helpless, He was. In 1981, Charles received a star on the Hollywood Alley was one of the first inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at his inaugural ceremony in 1986. It has won 17 Grammy Awards and reached number 14 on Billboard. His long list of awards includes induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Medal of Arts, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Charles died of liver disease at his home in Beverly Hills, California, on June 10, 2004, at his home in Beverly Hills, California, aged 73. His latest album, The Genius Loves Company, was released two months after his death, with duets with B.B. King, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, James Taylor, Gladys Knight, Michael McDonald, Natalie Cole, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Nora Jones and Johnny Mathis.
