The goal of this project is to author a book, A Progressive Guide to Commercial Trumpet Playing, to address this issue. Commercial music can be defined as music for the mass consumer audience with the intent to produce monetary profits. This approach will take a student stylistically from blues through the popular music of the 21st century. The ultimate goal of this book is to fill the pedagogical void in trumpet performance study material, providing a more complete foundation for the trumpet performer. Each chapter will deal with a specific commercial genre and will include a brief history, musical examples, etudes, and a duet. This information will show students how to approach a given style through musical listening and performance and will provide a structure for effectively learning each commercial genre. This resource will also provide classical trumpet professors the tools for teaching genres of music with which they may be uncomfortable.     291 What Handel Taught the Viennese about the Trombone David M. Guion Vienna became the musical capital of the world in the late eighteenth century, largely because its composers so successfully adapted and blended the best of the various national styles: German, Italian, French, and, yes, English. Handel’s oratorios were well known to the Viennese and very influential.1 His influence extended even to the way most of the greatest of them wrote trombone parts. It is well known that Viennese composers used the trombone extensively at a time when it was little used elsewhere in the world. While Fux, Caldara, and their contemporaries were using the trombone not only routinely to double the chorus in their liturgical music and sacred dramas, but also frequently as a solo instrument, composers elsewhere used it sparingly if at all. The trombone was virtually unknown in France. It had disappeared from German courts and was no longer automatically used by composers working in German towns. J.S. Bach used the trombone in only fifteen of his more than 200 extant cantatas. Trombonists were on the payroll of San Petronio in Bologna as late as 1729, apparently longer than in most major Italian churches, and in the town band (Concerto Palatino) until 1779. But they were available in England only between about 1738 and 1741. Handel called for them in Saul and Israel in Egypt. It is my contention that the influence of these two oratorios on Gluck and Haydn changed the way Viennese composers wrote trombone parts. Fux, Caldara, and the generations that followed used trombones only in church music and oratorios.

    “Boogie Wonderland” WITH SOHEILA SOKHANVARI PRIVATE VIEW 15th of October 2015 6:30 - 9:00PM 16th of October – 14th of November 2015 Occasionally, there are those strange moments in history during which what we see and what we hear are out of synch. Events unfold before our eyes and yet what we know to be true and what is being written in the history books are two different narratives, as opposite as night and day. This experience can create a strange sense of altered reality, a feeling that our senses are out of synch, a weird un-syncopated rhythm that causes us to re-examine historical events over and over, long after their initial catalysts have died down. Such is the case of Iranian-born artist Soheila Sokhanvari’s oeuvre, showcased through new works in the solo show Boogie Wonderland (16 October – 14 November 2015) at Kristin Hjellegjerde. With a joyful colour palette reminiscent of Frida Kahlo or Gauguin, Sokhanvari subscribes to the school of magical realism that enhanced reality in which the banal and everyday take on new life and meaning by being imbued with an elevated focus. It also belies the complex political undertones of her work, allowing her to take a step back and examine events from her native country through the lens of distance and time. She investigates the concept of collective trauma as an experience that can be told through the narratives of individuals, using mainly family photographs as her source material, alongside found imagery from pop culture and news recordings. Her work is also recognizable for its obsessive use of patterning and decoration, inspired by the idea of ‘anaesthetised aesthetics’, an expression used by philosopher Susan Buck- Morss to capture the way in which control over aesthetics can be used to control society.

We had a very successful year with great concerts: the Cyrus Chestnut tribute to Dave Brubeck, violinist Christian Howes, legendary 5721 Jonestown Road vocalist Freddy Cole, the Kenton Alumni Big Band, drummer Clarence Penn’s Monk tribute, and Harrisburg PA 17112 dynamic pianist Anthony Wonsey; our best Jazz Camp ever with a great faculty and 70 students; TEL: 717-540-1010 membership in CPFJ reached 600 - a level not seen for over 15 years; WEB: We have been awarded a generous grant from the Dauphin County Commissioners that will enable www.friendsofjazz.org us to present a concert on September 5th at Fort Hunter Park as part of the Dauphin County Jazz EMAIL: & Wine Festival.

    “September”—Earth Wind & Fire (1978) Added to the National Registry: 2018 Essay by Rickey Vincent (guest post)* “Do you remember, the 21st night of September…?” those were the opening lyrics to one of the biggest hits of 1978, and still one of the most entertaining pop songs over the decades. It is a song about memory, memories that have happened, and memories yet to come. A contagious joy emanates from the song, with lyrics that tease with importance, yet captivate with a repeating “ba-de-ya” refrain that is as memorable as any lyrical phrase. The song is a staple of movie soundtracks (such as “Ted 2,” “Barbershop--The Next Cut,” and “Night at the Museum”), commercial jingles, and family gatherings everywhere. With music providing tickles of percussion, soaring yet comforting horn lines, and the breathtaking harmonies, “September” is one of Earth Wind & Fires’ most catchy sing- along favorites. The lyrics spoke of dancing under the stars, and of celebrating moments in our lives. The words captured ideas that seemed so meaningful, yet really were not. The 21st night of September? What date was that? Was it someone’s birthday? How could a song tug at one’s memories, and yet refer to so little? Co-writer Allee Willis has said the date was used simply because it “sounded right when sung.” The irony was that Earth Wind & Fire had had a run of some of the most thought- provoking and inspiring messages in their catalogue of hit songs, from “Keep Your Head To the Sky” to “Shining Star” and “That’s the Way of the World,” there was an expectation of something deeper underpinning the uplifting experience.
