  • Czech Leader Visits White House Today Cheney Visits Manila Bonfires
The Daily Campus Serving the Storrs Community Since 1896 Vol.XCIIINo.81 The University of Connecticut Tuesday, February 20,1990 Czech leader visits White House today WASHINGTON (AP) — Vaclav Havel, the dissident playwright who went from prison to the presidency of Czechoslovakia inside of eight months, will meet with President Bush today, the first of Eastern Europe's new democratic leaders to visit the White House. Havel arrived here Monday evening after slops in Iceland and Canada on a Western trip that comes conspicuously a week before his first trip to Moscow. The Czech Parliament elected Havel president Dec. 29, a few weeks after a peaceful revolution led to the ouster of Communist Party chief Milos Jakes and his hardline government. Now the country, under Havel's caretaker government, is pre- paring for June 8th parliamentary elections that will be its first free balloting in more than 40 years. Havel has said he is coming West not to look for charity but investment in a country that already maintains a standard of living well above that of Poland, its neighbor to the north. "Czechoslovakia is not looking for U.S. aid. They arc not in the same economic dire straits that ... Poland has been in," a senior Bush administration official said. Secretary of State James A. • Beats of Your Town
BEATS OF YOUR TOWN On the eve of the release of their new album ‘Ocean’s Apart’, Grant McLennan, co-leader of watershed Brisbane pop group, The Go-Betweens, takes the time to grant Robiter an interview. Matthew ‘The Rock Lobbster’ Lobb reports The Clowns Come To Town – Film School Rejections and UQ Librarians Long before Queensland art tangled at a pretty summit with pop music (the years prior to LP wonderworks such as Before Hollywood, Liberty Belle And The Black Diamond Express and 16 Lovers Lane) , one Grant McLennan had been knocked back from film and television school on account of his 16 years. Enrolment in an arts program at the University of Queensland came, therefore, as a sort of edifying compromise. Once at St. Lucia, the undergraduate - a brainy eldest child from rural Queensland - befriended a gracefully mincing eccentric named Robert Forster who played guitar and wrote his own songs. The two bonded over shared tastes in skewered pop culture and spent a lot of time at the Humanities library reading, in import copies of The Village Voice, about emerging bands like Television and Talking Heads. Go-Betweens circa '78: Librarians Beware No doubt McLennan was more OCEAN’S APART PICKED APART Grant talks Robiter through the new studious than his pal who failed both at arts and at convincing him to album form a rock group. While a disciplined McLennan passed classes with focused endeavour, Forster was crashing heavily and channelling his ‘Here Comes A City’ (the first vigour into composing songs about would-be love interests.

August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th.

First up is the reissue of the Rolling Stones album Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!. What many consider the best live rock concert album of all time is now available from Abcko in a four-disc box set. Along with the original album there is a disc of five previously unreleased live performances and a DVD of those performances. There is a also a bonus CD of five live tracks from B.B. King and seven from Ike & Tina Turner, who were the opening acts on the tour. There is also a beautiful hardcover book with an essay by Russell, his photographs, fans’ notes and expanded liner notes, along with a lobby card-sized reproduction of the tour poster. Russell’s new book, Let It Bleed (Springboard), is now finally out and it’s a stunning visual look back on the infamous tour and the watershed Altamont concert. Russell doesn’t just provide his historic photos (which would be sufficient), but, like in his previous Dear Mr. Fantasy book, he serves as an insightful eyewitness of the greatest rock tour in history and rock music’s 60’s live Waterloo.

It is based on two years of fieldwork research I conducted there between 2006-2008. I approach the formation of the diasporic community in light of utopian visions of a past colored by colonial struggle and high national aspirations, and in light of subsequent political developments that resulted in oppression, exile, and even occupation after 2003. I read the displacement of Iraqis as an example of the failure of the postcolonial state, represented by the emergence of the Baath regime in the 1960s and Saddam Hussein’s rise to power in 1979. Throughout, I examine the heightened salience of sectarianism among Iraqis in exile and in Iraq since the 1990s. Instead of understanding sectarianism as a return to traditional loyalties, I argue that it is deeply linked to the issue of power and identity politics, which the Iraqi opposition to Saddam Hussein’s regime in the UK employed while in exile and institutionalized after the fall of the regime in 2003 with the support of the US Administration. This dissertation is, also, an ethnographic study of Iraq, and aims to make up for the dearth in anthropological studies on Iraq during the last four decades.
