Rhoicinus gaujoni builds complex, irregular sheet webs on the ground with a silk tube as a retreat . This report enlarges the distribution of the genus from western Sout h America to the central Amazon basin . The mating plugs usually produced by males are good examples of these structures where the main function is to obstruct the female genitalia against new sperm depositions. In spiders several types of mating plugs have been documented, the most common ones include solidified secretions, parts of the bulb or in some extraordinary cases the mutilation of the entire palpal bulb. Here, we describe the first case of modified setae, which are located on the cymbial dorsal base, used directly as a mating plug for the Order Araneae in the species Maeota setastrobilaris sp. -

A large spider, maximum size 11-14cm across the legs, with chevrons (V-shaped marks) on the abdomen (Fig. 1). Males are either grey or brown in colour, and females vary from green to brown with red or orange markings on the legs (Wikipedia, 2013). The Trinidad chevron tarantula is hairy in appearance, has eight legs, and its body is divided into two parts, the cephalothorax and the abdomen which are connected by a pedicel that looks like a narrow stalk (Fig. 2). The cephalothorax has eight legs plus a pair of smaller leg-like appendages (pedipalps) used to catch prey; in males these have palpal bulbs attached to the ends for holding sperm (Fig. 3). The mouth has chelicerae with fangs at the ends and swollen bases that house the venom glands, and there are eight small eyes (Foelix, 2010). However, even with eight eyes the Trinidad chevron tarantula can hardly see and so depends mostly on touch, smell, and taste to find its way. There are organs on their feet to detect changes in the environment and special type of hair on their legs and pedipalps for taste. Garrison1*, Michael S. Brewer2 and Jason E. Bond3 Abstract Background: Mygalomorph spiders represent a diverse, yet understudied lineage for which genomic level data has only recently become accessible through high-throughput genomic and transcriptomic sequencing methods. The Aptostichus atomarius species complex (family Euctenizidae) includes two coastal dune endemic members, each with inland sister species – affording exploration of dune adaptation associated patterns at the transcriptomic level. We apply an RNAseq approach to examine gene family conservation across the species complex and test for patterns of positive selection along branches leading to dune endemic species. Results: An average of ~ 44,000 contigs were assembled for eight spiders representing dune (n = 2), inland (n = 4), and atomarius species complex outgroup taxa (n = 2). Transcriptomes were estimated to be 64% complete on average with 77 spider reference orthologs missing from all taxa. Over 18,000 orthologous gene clusters were identified within the atomarius complex members, > 5000 were detected in all species, and ~ 4700 were shared between species complex members and outgroup Aptostichus species. Gene family analysis with the FUSTr pipeline identified 47 gene families appearing to be under selection in the atomarius ingroup; four of the five top clusters include sequences strongly resembling other arthropod venom peptides. The COATS pipeline identified six gene clusters under positive selection on branches leading to dune species, three of which reflected the preferred species tree. -

A new species of Tmesiphantes Simon, 1892 is described and illustrated, based on eight male specimens collected at the Una Biological Reserve, southern state of Bahia, Brazil. It is distinguished by the morphology of male palpal bulb and tibial apophysis. The new species is very small and is the smallest theraphosid described to date (body length 5.5 mm). It is distinguished from congeners by the size, which vary from 12 mm (T. riopretano) to 23.8 mm (T. nubilus) in other species of the genus, aspect of palpal bulb, sternal posterior sigillae close to sternal margin and by the aspect of tibial apophysis which lacks the prolateral branch. Tmesiphantes presently comprises nine species. Sixth have been described for the southern region of Bahia, a well known area of endemism in the Atlantic Forest. Identification keys for Tmesiphantes males and females are presented. KEY WORDS. Mygalomorphae; Neotropics; tarantula; taxonomy; Theraphosinae; Una Biological Reserve. Genetic analysis of tarantulas in the genus Brachypelma using Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) Abstract There is a great deal of morphological and genetic species diversity on Earth that requires careful conservation. One such genetically diverse genus of tarantulas is that of Brachypelma. In this study, we employ a newer DNA fingerprinting technique known as Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR), ot study the genetic variation among Brachypelma species and to determine if the invasive Brachypelma tarantula found in Florida B. vagans. Although B. vagans is a species protected under CITES Appendix II, this species has a wide distribution in Mexico and traits allowing for invasion to new habitats. It was hypothesized that the invasive tarantula in Florida is that of B. vagans and that it would be more closely related to samples from the Mexican populations as opposed to samples from the United States pet trade. -

FICHA DE ANTECEDENTES DE ESPECIE Nombre Científico Homoeomma orellanai Montenegro & Aguilera, 2018 Nombre común Tarántula enana de penacho amarillo, araña pollito Taxonomía Reino: Animalia Orden: Araneae Phyllum/División: Arthropoda Familia: Theraphosidae Clase: Arachnida Género: Homoeomma Sinonimia Antecedentes Generales Aspectos morfológicos Los machos difieren por la morfología del bulbo copulador, por tener una apófisis tegular digitiforme y la presencia de 1 pequeño diente sobre PI. Las hembras tienen una espermateca pareada con separados receptáculos seminales y con una base cuadrangular con las esquinas redondeadas y con una circular proyección lobular (Montenegro et al. 2018). Rasgos característicos no taxonómicos Las hembras presentan una coloración negra que predomina en todo el cuerpo. El abdomen es negro con un intenso penacho amarillo en la parte proximal y otro penacho más pequeño sobre las hileras. Cefalotórax y patas de color negro. Los machos adultos presentan la misma coloración que las hembras, siendo el tono un poco más intenso. Las patas de los machos son proporcionalmente más largas en relación al cuerpo que en el caso de las hembras y el abdomen proporcionalmente más pequeño. Además, los machos adultos presentan espolones tibiales en el primer par de patas y bulbos en los pedipalpos. Las crías recién salidas del saco tienen una coloración muy curiosa, son blanquecinos con una manchita oscura sobre el abdomen que los hacen muy diferente a los individuos adultos. En el caso de ejemplares juveniles o subadultos el dimorfismo sexual es prácticamente inexistente. El tamaño máximo de las hembras ronda los 6-7cm de envergadura (legspan), los machos son un poco más pequeños.
