The identification, pathology and survey of parasites of wild and cultured yellow-fin seabreams (Acanthopagrus latus Houttuyn, 1782) in coasts of the Persian Gulf

Abstract This study was conducted between autumn 2007 and summer 2008 on wild and cultured yellow-fin seabream on coasts of the Persian Gulf. 276 specimens were examined for parasitic infestations and 4 including Caligus pagrosomy, Lerneanthropus mugilii, Lepeophtheirus sekii and Achtheres percarum were recovered. Lepeophtherius sekii is reported for the first time in the Persian Gulf and Ira, and the others are reported for the first time from Acanthopagrus latus. Prevalence and mean intensity of crustacean parasites were 24.6 and 6.96 ± 6.23 respectively. The highest (47.1) and lowest (5.9) prevalence were found in summer and autumn respectively, and there were significant differences between spring, summer and winter, between summer and autumn, between autumn and winter (P < 0.05). The highest (10.73 ± 6.73; mean ± SD) and lowest (2.75 ± 1.5) mean intensity were found in summer and autumn, respectively, and there were significant differences between summer, winter and autumn.. A correlation was found between prevalence of crustacean parasites and weight as well, in which there was a direct positive relationship between weight and prevalence. The highest (32.9 and 20, respectively) and lowest (2.9) prevalence of Caligus pagrosomi and Lerneanthropus mugilii were found in summer and autumn, respectively. The highest intensity of these parasites were found in summer (8.36 ± 7.37 and 9.91 ± 3.78, respectively). A correlation was found between prevalence of Caligus pagrosomi and weight as well.
