The period 1929–2006 is covered. Our main aim has been to offer a convenient reference work to the large body of information now available. Remarkably, but understandably, the titles are widely regarded as the domain of specialists; probably few are consulted by administrators or general naturalists.

Zander (Sander lucioperca) Ecological Risk Screening Summary U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, September 2012 Revised, April 2019 Web Version, 8/27/2019 Photo: Akos Harka. Licensed under Creative Commons BY. Available: https://www.fishbase.de/photos/UploadedBy.php?autoctr=12734&win=uploaded. (April 3, 2019). 1 Native Range and Status in the United States Native Range From Larsen and Berg (2014): “S. lucioperca occurs naturally in lakes and rivers of Middle and Eastern Europe from Elbe, Vistula, north from Danube up to the Aral Sea and the northernmost observations of native populations were recorded in Finland up to 64° N. S. lucioperca naturally inhabits Onega and Ladoga lakes, brackish bays and lagoons of the Baltic sea. The distribution range in the Baltic area is supposed to be equivalent to the range of the post-glacial Ancylus Lake, which during the period 9200-9000 BP had a water level 100-150 m above the present sealevel of the Baltic Sea (Salminen et al. 2011). The most southern populations are known from regions near the Caucasus, inhabiting brackish and saline waters of Caspian, Azov and Black Seas (Bukelskis et al., 1998). Historic evidence from 1700 and 1800 (two sources) suggests the existence of one natural population in Denmark, in Lake Haderslev Dam and the neighbouring brackish Haderslev Fiord on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula (Berg 2012).” From Froese and Pauly (2019a): “Occur in adjacent or contiguous drainage basins to Afghanistan; Amu Darya river [Coad 1981].” 1 Status in the United States From Fuller and Neilson (2019): “Although it was thought that zander stocked into a North Dakota lake did not survive (e.g., Anderson 1992), the capture of a fish in August 1999, and another 2+ year old fish in 2000 shows that at least some survived and reproduced.

Nowak (2004) Importance of copepoda in freshwater aquaculture. Zoological Studies 43(2): 193-205. In recent decades, aquaculture has become an increasingly important part of the world economy. Other than marketing concerns, the biggest challenge facing fish farmers is to control the many complex abiotic and biotic factors that influence the success of fish rearing. An example of the complexity involved in managing aquatic systems is the need to control copepod populations by manipulating the pond environment. Copepods play major roles in pond ecosystems, serving as 1) food for small fish, 2) micropredators of fish and other organisms, 3) fish parasites, 4) intermediate hosts of fish para- sites, and 5) hosts and vectors of human diseases.

The Parasitic Copepods Achtheres percarum Nordmann and Salmincola gordoni Gurney in Yorkshire GEOFFREY FRYER Freshwater Biological Association, Ambleside, Westmorland f- 634 756 Reprinted from the July—September 1969 issue of The Naturalist (No. 910) 77 THE PARASITIC COPEPODS ACHTHERES PERCARUM NORDMANN AND SALMINCOLA GORDONI GURNEY IN YORKSHIRE GEOFFREY FRYER Freshwater Biological Association, Ambleside, Westmorland Of the two parasitic copepods referred to here, both of which belong to the family Lernaeopodidae, Achtheres percarum was collected in Britain for the first time in 1954 in the River Colne, and in the Grand Union and Kennet and Avon Canals, all of which are in the Thames drainage area (Harding & Gervers, 1956). Since then it has been reported from Rostherne Mere, Cheshire [Rizvi — unpublished thesis, cited by Chubb (1965)] but not apparently elsewhere in this country. Because of the confusion in which it was involved (see below) it was, however, described and illustrated by Gurney (1933) in his monograph of the British freshwater Copepoda. The material he used came from continental Europe. The other species, Salmincola gordoni, was already known in Yorkshire and was indeed described from specimens collected in the River Rye (Gurney, 1933). It has since been reported from Scotland (Friend, 1939) where it had already been found prior to Gurney's work but had been erroneously reported (Scott & Scott, 1913) as Achtheres percarum, and has more recently been reported from the Isle of Man (Bruce, Colman & Jones, 1963). Outside the British Isles it is unknown. (It is possible that S. heintzi (Neresheimer) from Bavaria, which I regard as unrecognisable from existing descriptions, is closely related to this species.) COMMISSIONED REPORT Summary Alien species and the Water Framework Directive: using alien species forums to address problems in Scottish catchments Commissioned Report No. 299 (ROAME No. R07AC614) Contractor: ADAS Year of publication: 2008 Background Many aquatic alien species have been introduced to Britain, either deliberately or accidentally. Although the text of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) does not explicitly mention alien species, the European Commission, the UK government administrations, and the UK Technical Advisory Group (UKTAG) have accepted that alien species should be considered as a pressure on water bodies that needs to be considered when implementing the Directive. This project addressed how the WFD ‘programmes of measures’ may be used to help tackle the problems of water bodies failing (or likely to fail) to meet their environmental objectives by exploring practical, collaborative ways of addressing alien species issues in Scotland and by developing strategies to manage them.
