Wildlife Sites Guidance Wales A Guide to Develop Local Wildlife Systems in Wales Wildlife Sites Guidance Wales A Guide to Develop Local Wildlife Systems in Wales Foreword The Welsh Assembly Government’s Environment Strategy for Wales, published in May 2006, pays tribute to the intrinsic value of biodiversity – ‘the variety of life on earth’. The Strategy acknowledges the role biodiversity plays, not only in many natural processes, but also in the direct and indirect economic, social, aesthetic, cultural and spiritual benefits that we derive from it. The Strategy also acknowledges that pressures brought about by our own actions and by other factors, such as climate change, have resulted in damage to the biodiversity of Wales and calls for a halt to this loss and for the implementation of measures to bring about a recovery. Local Wildlife Sites provide essential support between and around our internationally and nationally designated nature sites and thus aid our efforts to build a more resilient network for nature in Wales. The Wildlife Sites Guidance derives from the shared knowledge and experience of people and organisations throughout Wales and beyond and provides a common point of reference for the most effective selection of Local Wildlife Sites. I am grateful to the Wales Biodiversity Partnership for developing the Wildlife Sites Guidance. The contribution and co-operation of organisations and individuals across Wales are vital to achieving our biodiversity targets. WOLFGANG BOMBLE 1 Einleitung Die Ränder feuchter Waldwege schmücken oft Bestände mittelgroßer Persicaria-Arten (Abb. 1). Sie bewohnen außerhalb der Wälder auch die Ufer von Gewässern und feuchte Stellen im Grünland wie z. B. Flutmulden in Bach- und Flussauen. Im Bereich der halboffe- nen bis schattigen Wege unserer Wirtschaftswälder treten sie in großen Beständen auf und wachsen gewöhnlich zu mehreren Arten durchmischt. Als typisch für solche Lebensräume gelten drei Arten mit schlanken Blütenständen: P. hydropiper (Wasserpfeffer-Knöterich), P. minus (Kleiner Knöterich) und P. mitis (Milder Knöterich). Neben diesen wächst hier regel- mäßig noch eine vierte Art, die ihren Häufigkeitsschwerpunkt außerhalb der Wälder in Rude- ralgesellschaften hat: der Floh-Knöterich (P. maculosa). P. lapathifolia (Ampfer-Knöterich) und P. pallida1 (Bleicher Knöterich) konnten vom Verfasser nur ausnahmsweise an Wald- wegen beobachtet werden und werden in dieser Arbeit nicht eingehend besprochen. Following publication of the New Atlas of the British & Irish Flora and the Vice-county Census Catalogue , new criteria have been drawn up for the inclusion of records in Plant Records . (See BSBI News no. 95, January 2004 pp.10 & 11). These are outlined below: • First records of all taxa (species, subspecies and hybrids) included in the VCCC, designated as native, archaeophyte, neophyte or casual. • First record since 1970 of the taxa above, except in the case of Rubus , Hieracium and Taraxacum . • Records demonstrating the rediscovery of all taxa published as extinct in the VCCC or subsequently. • Newly reported definite extinctions. • Deletions from the VCCC (e.g. through the discovery of errors, the redetermination of specimens etc.) NB – only those errors affecting VCCC entry. • New 10-km square records for Rare and Scarce plants, defined as those species in the New Atlas mapped in the British Isles in 100 10km squares or fewer. (See BSBI News no. 95, January 2004 pp. 36–43). Records for the subdivisions of vice-counties will not be treated separately; they must therefore be records for the vice-county as a whole. However, records will be accepted for the major islands in v.cc. 100, 102-104, 110 and 113. Despite having similar biological developmental steps, pollen grain surface features are remarkably geometrically varied. Previous work suggests that a physical process may drive this pattern formation and that the observed diversity of patterns can be explained by viewing pollen pattern development as a phase transition to a spatially modulated phase. Several studies have shown that the polysaccharide material of plant cell walls undergoes phase separation in the absence of cross-linking stabilizers of the mixed phase. Here we show experimental evidence that phase separation of the extracellular polysaccharide material (primexine) during pollen cell development leads to a spatially modulated phase. The spatial pattern of this phase-separated primexine is also mechanically coupled to the undulation of the pollen cell membrane. The resulting patterned pools of denser primexine form the negative template of the ultimate sites of sporopollenin deposition, leading to the final micropattern observed in the mature pollen. We then present a general physical model of pattern formation via modulated phases. Using analytical and numerical techniques, we find that most of the pollen micropatterns observed in biological evolution could result from a physical process of modulated phases. -
Key to Wetland Plants
A Vegetative Key to Wetland Plants John Poland and Freshwater Habitats Trust Draft October 2018 Introduction PondNet is national volunteer survey network which aims to collect information about trends in pond quality and pond species, including rare plants and animals. Pond quality monitoring is based on PSYM (Predictive System for Multimetrics) surveys. This standard method provides an assessment of the ecological quality of a site compared to ponds nationally. It requires basic environmental information and, as a minimum, the identification of all the wetland plant species found in the pond. The accuracy with which PSYM scores are calculated and for consistency of monitoring between years, the survey is reliant on accurate identification of plant species. Therefore we recommend that only experienced botanist carry out the survey. During the HLF funded People, Ponds and Water project we ran a series of wetland plant identification workshops to help beginners on their learning journey, but many commented that the keys were very technical, or covered species they were not likely to encounter, or that they relied too much on flowers which can be inconspicuous or absent for much of the year. The Vegetative Key to the British Flora by John Poland and Eric Element https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vegetative-Key-British-Flora/dp/0956014402 published in 2009 has become an essential tool for field botanists. Unlike conventional guides which often rely on the characteristics of flowers or fruit, the vegetative key relies on other plant characteristics; ones that can be found throughout the growing season. -

S. Hitchcock and Paul C. Standley published their succinct manual in 1919 for the identification of the vascular flora in the Washington, DC, area. A comparable new manual has long been needed. As with their work, such a manual should be produced through a collaborative effort of the region’s botanists and other experts. The Annotated Checklist is offered as a first step, in the hope that it will spark and facilitate that effort. In preparing this checklist, Shetler has been responsible for the taxonomy and nomenclature and Orli for the database. We have chosen to distribute the first part in preliminary form, so that it can be used, criticized, and revised while it is current and the second part (Monocotyledons) is still in progress. Additions, corrections, and comments are welcome. We hope that our checklist will stimulate a new wave of fieldwork to check on the current status of the local flora relative to what is reported here. When Part II is finished, the two parts will be combined into a single publication. We also maintain a Web site for the Flora of the Washington-Baltimore Area, and the database can be searched there (http://www.nmnh.si.edu/botany/projects/dcflora). -
